CerebroJD - I'm not 100% sure as I might be missing something, but Id specified the heights on a skin, and yet changing the prefs to include more (or less) items on the start menu changed it's height...
Will Mullen - since my minimal skin submitted for the GUIO has been likened to the High contrast setting in windows, I suppose it could be easily inverted to give white on black instead of the current black on white. OK...I initially agreed with this article, but I have a different slant on things now having just gone browsing through the ol' library here (sorted by Asc created date). I now think this is just a case of nostalgia. YES, there were SOME really great original skins back in the "good ol' days"...but there was an awful lot of insipid designs and herd mentality rehashing existing interfaces, and porting previous ideas. Hmmm, I just tried the (current) 4.29c[rc].003 build on XP Pro with a dual monitor set up and a relatively slow and old video card and it wasn't happy at all. Instead of a nice "morph", when applying a new skin, lots of items became broken graphics (including the taskbar, window frames etc!), and then the WB control panel stopped listening to me - it registered clicks, but refused to even think about applying another skin. Thankfully, SDC let me restore an archived version and it's all

In theory, the start panel seems to be able to expand to the screen height, and since you can't know that, I don't think you can set an upper limit on the size. You need to just accept that and design for it to change size I think....I could be wrong.
I've had the same symptoms in the past, and I'd actually given up on having it work ever again for a while...then I found a tip somewhere about needing to Delete the entire default setup or something (it was a while ago so I can't recall exactly)...BUT, if you uninstall DX, backup any themes you wish to keep, then Delete the entire DesktopX program folder before you try re-installing, then you might get some joy. It's been a while since I tried LiteStep, but as I remember it, it's a replacement shell rather than a hack...ie it replaces Explorer as the core software controlling the desktop etc, but in a way with a documented and supported interface.
An extra point which I think might lead to fewer pink skins is that "magic pink" translates to transparent, and hence any skin using various shades of pink has to be careful to avoid accidentally including that in the wrong places. Erm...you can get this effect (or near as), by choosing classic options in XP...or do you have something specific in mind? Do you need the Start menu to actually say Windows 98 for instance?

I'm not sure how practical this would be, but possibly solve this by creating a practically transparent object that covers the entire desktop, set it to be at the back, and then use a script to process the mouse clicks and pass through any you're not interested in to the "desktop". Since I've not looked into scripting in DX too far, this may be pie in the sky...but it's sort of how a lot of apps that skin the desktop works, so it might have some milage in it.

My bet would be on there being some other add in to IE causing the problem as WB works fine with a vanilla set up of IE. There are so many possible interactions on any particular system that it would be almost impossible to guess at causes. You could always wipe your machine, re-install Windows and Object Desktop and probably solve it..
