WinCustomize: What happens next

WinCustomize: What happens next

The plan for WinCustomize's future

Overall Philosophy

WinCustomize.com is a website whose goals are to promote a skinning community as well as help support content being created and shared that is for use with Stardock's software. Over the years, WinCustomize.com's popularity has grown immensely.  By October of 2005, it had reached a staggering 25 million monthly visitors.  Because the site focuses largely on the downloading of skins, themes, icons, and wallpapers, the bandwidth expenses for the site are enormous.  In addition, as the site has tried to sustain a feeling of community as opposed to being merely a glorified FTP site, the expense in running the site has grown due to the need to bring in and coordinate increasing numbers of file, SQL, and scripting servers.

In its present state, Stardock pays for the cost of WinCustomize that isn't covered by advertising revenue and WinCustomize subscriptions.  WinCustomize is a very valuable asset of Stardock and the community that it supports means a lot to the the people who work at Stardock.  Stardock is a privately held company so its motivations are not necessarily driven by maximizing profit (in other words, making money isn't the only goal).

However, while WinCustomize's importance to Stardock is immense, it is not infinite.  Simply put, the cost of running WinCustomize has outstripped Stardock's ability to sustain it.  Of the 25 million visitors each month, over 3 million of them are "unique" (i.e. different people).  Obviously, most of those users aren't Stardock customers in any form.  To make WinCustomize viable, the model under which is operates needs to evolve.  It is clear that a subscription drive isn't going to be enough.  The October subscription drive managed to bring in less than 1,000 people -- many of whom were existing subscribers who re-subscribed.  In essence, of a website that gets over 3 million different people visiting, it would seem that our "hard core" community of users is probably less (guessing) than a few thousand.  In other words, the "community" of users is still relatively small which isn't necessarily all bad.

Over the coming months, users will see a gradual evolution of the site designed to increase revenue coming into the site.  Most of the effort will come from increasing advertising revenue. The rest will come from encouraging subscriptions and providing financial rewards to skin authors.

Users who have Object Desktop will become distinct from users who have simply purchased a product.  Object Desktop users will not have full WinCustomize subscription status but they will have unlimited downloads.  Those who have purchased a given product (such as WindowBlinds or IconPackager) will have unlimited downloads in their corresponding product but not in other areas.  The biggest change an Object Desktop user will see is that some skins will be marked as subscriber-only for the first 30 days and those skins will be part of the normal gallery.  Otherwise, things will be essentially the same.

The biggest changes for users who haven't purchased is that the site will have a lot more advertising on it and there will be a much greater push for users to create an account.

User Classes

Classes of users:

0: People who do not have accounts.

1: People who have created an account but have no subscription and have not purchased a product. Accounts are free to create.

2: People who have purchased a product or subscription in the past but are currently not active customers

3: People who are active customers (purchased a product in the past year).

4: People who have an active Object Desktop account.

5: People who have a WinCustomize Platinum Subscription.

Users with Apprentice Access to Master Apprentice will have the equivalent of Group 4.  Users with Journeyman access on up will have the equivalent of group 5. Users with Contributor access will have the equivalent of Group 2.

Access Privileges:

Group 0 users will not be able to download skins and themes that are 0 days old.  They will only be able to download 10 megabytes of other skins & themes.  The number of ads they see will be akin to what people see on other sites -- in other words quite a bit.  They will be designed to bypass the various ad-blocking programs (Stardock, after all, is a software developer, we can get around this stuff if we put effort into it).

Group 1 users will be able to download up to 50 megabytes of skins and themes without having to purchase something or contribute something. They will see a lot of ads but not quite as much as group 0. Still quite a bit more than they see today.  The number of ads these users see will grow based on the # of megabytes they download.  At first, a group 1 user would see about the same # of ads as group 2 but then it would steadily increase.  The system will also be updated to make it more difficult to bypass.

Group 2 users will be able to download up to 500 megabytes of skins and themes of the product they had bought and 50 megabytes elsewhere without having to purchase something or contribute something. Otherwise they are the same as group 1.

Group 3 users will be able to download an unlimited amount of content in the product they've purchased plus 100 megabytes elsewhere. They don't see quite as much ads as group 2.

Group 4 users will be able to download an unlimited amount of content. They see fewer ads. They get personal pages.

Group 5 users will be able to download premium skins. They see no ads. They have unlimited downloads. They get the WinCustomize skin browser. They get to download subscriber-only skins. Their posts, comments, etc. will have a graphic by them indicating that they are a subscriber.

New Features

Contributor Access.  Anyone who submits a skin, theme, icon, wallpaper that gets made public is automatically promoted to Contributor level. They automatically gain new privileges on the site.

Subscriber-Only Skins. When a user who has Master access or higher submits a skin, a checkbox will appear that will indicate whether it is only available for subscribers or not.  If checked, the skin is only available for subscribers for 30 days after its original create date (updates don't count).  Eventually, skinners will be able to have a special link to their Affiliate page (if exists) https://www.stardock.com/affiliates.asp that if the person buys a subscription from their link the skin author will receive 20% of the revenue.

Long Term Goal

In the near-term, we want to get the site to be financially viable.  A site with the level of visitation that WinCustomize currently has should have at least 3 full-time people dedicated to it with another 3 who provide help part-time (speaking in terms of web design, database development, ASP development, server management, community support, etc.).  The site also needs at least 3 more servers which is where the money from the subscription drive is largely going to go towards.

Once revenue is more balanced under the current system through the changes we mentioned above, Stardock will hire people who will work on WinCustomize full-time to help support subscribers and the community in general.  Some people have noted how much of a difference just having one person providing community support in the forums recently.  Having people assigned to work on the site could make a big difference and help the site evolve into a place that isn't just a first-rate community but a place where skinners and artists can financially benefit from their work as well.

So the site isn't going to become some subscriber-only site.  There will be a few more limits on non-subscribers and those without accounts or haven't purchased anything will start to see a lot mroe ads.  But hopefully over time these changes will be enough to tilt the mighty ship on course.  When you're dealing with millions of people each month, you only have to make changes that make a slight effect.   Supporting the site can mean everything from buying a subscription to supporting our advertisers by visiting their sites through their ads to of course creating skins, themes, icons, wallpapers, etc. as well as participating on our forums and comments areas.

There are also people who are not listed as subscribers and have little or nothing posted who have higher access classes. It just doesn't add up.

Citizen Sembetu ...before Wincustomize.com started, almost 5 years ago, there was already a skinning community, largely centered around the original Skinz.org.  People who migrated from there to here, when WC began already had a 'history' of contribution which is why there is what appears to the casual observer as 'anomalies'.  Also, members here who have significant contribution/s to skinning's community on other sites can and do have access levels to reflect this.

There was, however a short-lived bug which saw a few people join with odd levels they were not entitled to...and most, if not all have been noticed and corrected.

Sometimes, however 'promotions' can be a bit tardy...but all good things come to he who waits....

Excellent structure, Brad.

Kudos to you and the team.

Well, I use WinCustomize enough that I'd say this new model will probably move me to get a subscription. I don't think I could live with just 50mb of total content download.

fair enough.. consider my mouth shut on that issue.

Now, to this business of fonts... hopefully a later discussion after this new WC rollout sees it's revenues... I will come back to it, though.

Well, WC Team, good luck with this new plan, and you have my support.

One question, so the Subscriber-Only Skins are only available for 30 days, then what? Not complaining, dont get me wrong, fully understand the cost of bandwidth and high-end servers, been a subscriber and customer for several years, just wondering what happens to those skins after 30 days.

well i asked my question and got the answer so now its time to tell time.....

i think that the new set of rules is good.......its not really as rough as people said it would be and i think that that's a good way to make the site better.

i bet that in the months that'll still to come, this site will have more subscribers than ever before

i'm glad that i chose wincustomize in the first place

Neither I nor ANY-ONE else was JourneyMan, Master, Mod, or Admin by the time they joinned WC. They were all CITIZINS but through hard-work and continuous struggle, they achieved the level where they are now.

I do consider this comment BS In a lot of aspects. Despite my clear activity in the forum and busting my a@$ and all time online to promote the site what type of "access level" am I? A meere citizen. I believe it's like anything else, like any other company and like the world in general. Doesn't matter how much you contribute or other, it matters how much butt you can kiss to the higher levels that promote people. But, hey, again I paid into Stardock AND WinCustomize.com asking only to help in return and be respected for my contributions. But, asking that was a waste. I post and get nothing but negative comments in return from "higher ups". It's not the community, like I said before. Just like half of the higher ups have thumbs up their butts. But, that's fine with me. I'm here for Stardock and WinCustomize.com not for those morons. 4 or 5 idiots won't promote me? No problem. I KNOW what I contribute and I won't kiss butt for a promotion. Never have had to in the past.

the 30 day thing , i believe is for the artitsts to set a skin to be Subscriber only for 30 days then i would imagine they would be acessable to all..

Ultimate Edgemaster... I've never seen a single post by you, unless you go by another name on the forums. Promotions arent about kissing anyones ass, ever. Deserving recipients are often members who dont advertise they want a promotion, but simply a matter of positive contribution and attitude. With increasing ranks/promotions, there is greater responsibility. Therefor, careful attention must be placed on the attitude of all potentials. Cant have admins out and about flying off the handle over every flame.

Lets not judge too harshly/quickly. Yes, there are some exceptions to 'general promotion recommendations', but they are special cases that deserve special treatment. Instead of drawing attention to yourself, why not write some more articles? I note your first one was written last week...

Kinda edgy, Ultimate. A lot of people don't even use Journeyman, Aprentice, Skinner, etc. with the right to do so. A good example is a master skinner who simply calls himself treetog. I believe your butt kissing is mostly hot air. This is the fairest site on the net. Try a positive approach and see where it leads you. The future site plans are concrete and well constructed, I may add.

Ultimate Edgemaster, your words are in bad form and not very accurate.
You have only been around for 6 months according to your profile. That is not a very long time. Yes, some do get promoted by that time but it is not because of how much they speak at the board it is more about what they say.
As for kissing butt, that does not work well around here. From what I have noticed, ask or pester and you will not usually receive.
I was here for a year before I became an apprentice. I talked and helped out when I could on the board and made some skins.
Everything good comes in time. You also have to remember how many different people are at the site. How can everyone be noticed.
Ultimate Edgemaster, you have done made yourself noticed. Sadly it was not the best way to go about it.

Ultimate Edgemaster ....You have been a member for 5 months.  Others are 'still citizens' after nearly 5 years.   Also, 'kissing butt' is very unlikely to result in promotion.  None of the people in a position to 'promote' others is sufficiently immature or fickle.

The quote was incorrect, however, as not all were 'citizens' at Wincustomize.com's inception, nor was it a level playing field.  As mentioned before, people were in positions of trust/experience from prior skinning communities.  When levels attained are a product of on-going contribution/s from as far back as '98 or '99 then a history measured in months can be seen in perspective...

Doesn't really matter what I have to say anyways. I've applied to MANY articles. Only difference is a nick change. Perhaps, those articles didn't tally up. Because Cerebro you've seen me all over. Again though perhaps that's fault of mine with the nick change.

6 Months dedication is perhaps a bit slim in comparison. But, this is the only internet website I even go to besides checking my mail. I take care of my son, sleep, work and sit on WinCustomize.com. That's It.

Doubt many could say that. But doesn't mean they aren't as dedicated just means their entertained by a wider variety of websites.

I pass out flyers at my work for Stardock and WinCustomize.com.. I sit on ALL night responding to posts and such, trying to make a difference. I'm not demanding promotion or even suggesting really. IF I had a promotion it wouldn't matter because I wouldn't even flaunt it around or use it in my nick. Being an ObjectDesktop purchaser and WinCustomize.com subscriber I already have ultimited downloads, etc..

It's not about the title, it's about the recognition. Many don't mention it and I could see why. But when I've been "bleeding" the sites "color" for my 6 months of being a part of it, I believe that accounts for something, personally.

MY comments are simple. Promotion "seems" to be based soley on skinning and "friend of a friend" unless they are from other skinning sites? I don't know I'm obviously not even of minimal access to tell. I just want the promotions to be more fair. I don't care as much if I get promotion. But, I do care that it's fair when promoting and from what I've seen spending 8+ hours on here a night for the past 6 months, it's not.

No hard feelings we're all community, but there IS some levels of favoritism. Those who can't admit that are themselves effectly positively. If I were promoted I'd probably change my tune about it as well, as anyone would. Doesn't stop the fact though.

I've been a community leader on more than a handful of forums in the past 10 years. I've always been fair, not saying 98% of the promotion team isn't, but in life, there's corruption and favoritism.

I guess what set me off is when a couple months back I tried to help repair an iconpack. And did. I was told it wasn't mind to distrubute when I offered to upload it to the site as just a fix. Instead that iconpack took two weeks to be repaired. I helped, and deemded as a "town idiot" first time. Second, is when I offered voluntary services and was disregarded or bashed on. That's wrong. I offered to help, I don't deserve that type of feedback for offering free services and my time.

Bottom line is, in my situation ANYONE would get mad. I've always ruled with a strict yet "restricted" hand. I've always welcomed help no matter how pitty it was on other forums. I've allowed everyone to be involved. Not just a select few, which I think is wrong. Anyone who can't side with that aspect, has the problem with them, not me.

Stardock is great. WinCustomize.com is great. The community is like my family even though 60% hate me (well deserved perhaps. lol) But I don't need to be treated like I'm inconveniencing the site when I try to help out, that's the issue. You think people just fly off the handle for no apparent reason? I don't. Stop wondering why I'm pis$ed and ask about it, Do I not have valid reason at least in the way I describe the events I've been part of?

p.s. Jafo and Cerebro you two aren't my issue, you are both fair and cool with me. I've always respected you. Those whom I have problems should know already, bad form is mentioning those people and the situations.

::cough:: even though Jafo sucks at picking a good wallpaper for approval.

Nice Start, I particularly like that the more limited acess levels will have some access to the areas outside any product they may own.I can honestly say that most of my purchases occurred from wandering outside my perenial OD.Net subscription and being Wowed by the other offerings. I still think the highest level should only have access to a limited number of "Premium " skins (Stardock created or Initiated) maybe a group of high level themes out of which we could choose a few over the course of our subscriptions? maybe using a token system like you have on drengin? Anyway, Thank you for a well thought out plan of action , I know you didn't want to do it,but well I guess that's just beating the dead horse.....I have actually decided to try to make a WB skin..directly because of this site!.I have the innate creative talent of a monkey with a bucket of paint. should be "interesting"

i havent read every comment so forgive me if this is a repeat of someone... another restriction for group 0 i think should be a limit on how many pages they can access. that is another thing that can hog bandwitch and much as file downloads when people browse through the whole site, or if they are new, browsing dozens of pages with all those pictures to find a good skin. maybe you guys could put an overall daily bandwidth use limit for each IP and perhaps add a little meter on each page somewhere telling the person how much they have left. this could help a little to curb the bandwisth usage.

I've been a member since 9/2/2005. Two whole months. It didn't take me long to see how great a site and resource Wincustomize is. I purchased a WinCustomize Subscription on 10/19/05. Happy with the new restictions Brad put forth above. Keep up the great work
