WinCustomize: What happens next

WinCustomize: What happens next

The plan for WinCustomize's future

Overall Philosophy

WinCustomize.com is a website whose goals are to promote a skinning community as well as help support content being created and shared that is for use with Stardock's software. Over the years, WinCustomize.com's popularity has grown immensely.  By October of 2005, it had reached a staggering 25 million monthly visitors.  Because the site focuses largely on the downloading of skins, themes, icons, and wallpapers, the bandwidth expenses for the site are enormous.  In addition, as the site has tried to sustain a feeling of community as opposed to being merely a glorified FTP site, the expense in running the site has grown due to the need to bring in and coordinate increasing numbers of file, SQL, and scripting servers.

In its present state, Stardock pays for the cost of WinCustomize that isn't covered by advertising revenue and WinCustomize subscriptions.  WinCustomize is a very valuable asset of Stardock and the community that it supports means a lot to the the people who work at Stardock.  Stardock is a privately held company so its motivations are not necessarily driven by maximizing profit (in other words, making money isn't the only goal).

However, while WinCustomize's importance to Stardock is immense, it is not infinite.  Simply put, the cost of running WinCustomize has outstripped Stardock's ability to sustain it.  Of the 25 million visitors each month, over 3 million of them are "unique" (i.e. different people).  Obviously, most of those users aren't Stardock customers in any form.  To make WinCustomize viable, the model under which is operates needs to evolve.  It is clear that a subscription drive isn't going to be enough.  The October subscription drive managed to bring in less than 1,000 people -- many of whom were existing subscribers who re-subscribed.  In essence, of a website that gets over 3 million different people visiting, it would seem that our "hard core" community of users is probably less (guessing) than a few thousand.  In other words, the "community" of users is still relatively small which isn't necessarily all bad.

Over the coming months, users will see a gradual evolution of the site designed to increase revenue coming into the site.  Most of the effort will come from increasing advertising revenue. The rest will come from encouraging subscriptions and providing financial rewards to skin authors.

Users who have Object Desktop will become distinct from users who have simply purchased a product.  Object Desktop users will not have full WinCustomize subscription status but they will have unlimited downloads.  Those who have purchased a given product (such as WindowBlinds or IconPackager) will have unlimited downloads in their corresponding product but not in other areas.  The biggest change an Object Desktop user will see is that some skins will be marked as subscriber-only for the first 30 days and those skins will be part of the normal gallery.  Otherwise, things will be essentially the same.

The biggest changes for users who haven't purchased is that the site will have a lot more advertising on it and there will be a much greater push for users to create an account.

User Classes

Classes of users:

0: People who do not have accounts.

1: People who have created an account but have no subscription and have not purchased a product. Accounts are free to create.

2: People who have purchased a product or subscription in the past but are currently not active customers

3: People who are active customers (purchased a product in the past year).

4: People who have an active Object Desktop account.

5: People who have a WinCustomize Platinum Subscription.

Users with Apprentice Access to Master Apprentice will have the equivalent of Group 4.  Users with Journeyman access on up will have the equivalent of group 5. Users with Contributor access will have the equivalent of Group 2.

Access Privileges:

Group 0 users will not be able to download skins and themes that are 0 days old.  They will only be able to download 10 megabytes of other skins & themes.  The number of ads they see will be akin to what people see on other sites -- in other words quite a bit.  They will be designed to bypass the various ad-blocking programs (Stardock, after all, is a software developer, we can get around this stuff if we put effort into it).

Group 1 users will be able to download up to 50 megabytes of skins and themes without having to purchase something or contribute something. They will see a lot of ads but not quite as much as group 0. Still quite a bit more than they see today.  The number of ads these users see will grow based on the # of megabytes they download.  At first, a group 1 user would see about the same # of ads as group 2 but then it would steadily increase.  The system will also be updated to make it more difficult to bypass.

Group 2 users will be able to download up to 500 megabytes of skins and themes of the product they had bought and 50 megabytes elsewhere without having to purchase something or contribute something. Otherwise they are the same as group 1.

Group 3 users will be able to download an unlimited amount of content in the product they've purchased plus 100 megabytes elsewhere. They don't see quite as much ads as group 2.

Group 4 users will be able to download an unlimited amount of content. They see fewer ads. They get personal pages.

Group 5 users will be able to download premium skins. They see no ads. They have unlimited downloads. They get the WinCustomize skin browser. They get to download subscriber-only skins. Their posts, comments, etc. will have a graphic by them indicating that they are a subscriber.

New Features

Contributor Access.  Anyone who submits a skin, theme, icon, wallpaper that gets made public is automatically promoted to Contributor level. They automatically gain new privileges on the site.

Subscriber-Only Skins. When a user who has Master access or higher submits a skin, a checkbox will appear that will indicate whether it is only available for subscribers or not.  If checked, the skin is only available for subscribers for 30 days after its original create date (updates don't count).  Eventually, skinners will be able to have a special link to their Affiliate page (if exists) https://www.stardock.com/affiliates.asp that if the person buys a subscription from their link the skin author will receive 20% of the revenue.

Long Term Goal

In the near-term, we want to get the site to be financially viable.  A site with the level of visitation that WinCustomize currently has should have at least 3 full-time people dedicated to it with another 3 who provide help part-time (speaking in terms of web design, database development, ASP development, server management, community support, etc.).  The site also needs at least 3 more servers which is where the money from the subscription drive is largely going to go towards.

Once revenue is more balanced under the current system through the changes we mentioned above, Stardock will hire people who will work on WinCustomize full-time to help support subscribers and the community in general.  Some people have noted how much of a difference just having one person providing community support in the forums recently.  Having people assigned to work on the site could make a big difference and help the site evolve into a place that isn't just a first-rate community but a place where skinners and artists can financially benefit from their work as well.

So the site isn't going to become some subscriber-only site.  There will be a few more limits on non-subscribers and those without accounts or haven't purchased anything will start to see a lot mroe ads.  But hopefully over time these changes will be enough to tilt the mighty ship on course.  When you're dealing with millions of people each month, you only have to make changes that make a slight effect.   Supporting the site can mean everything from buying a subscription to supporting our advertisers by visiting their sites through their ads to of course creating skins, themes, icons, wallpapers, etc. as well as participating on our forums and comments areas.

Can you elaborate on how skins that Object Desktop subscribers won't see for 30 days will be chosen? Is it just by the choice of the artist as indicated above? Some of us subscribers don't use features of this site like personal pages. Given the choice I'd rather see that go away than say not be able to downlaod a skin by Kol for 30 days.

Support this 100% - very fair and well thought out

I only have one issue vaguely related to all of this. The method of promotion still seems fairly ambiguous to me. I have see people with very few posts who are journeymen or apprentices, and people who are faithful contributors who are citizens. I am not concerned with my own personal gain, though, I simply don't have the time to commit. However, I do participate enough to notice these minor anomalies. Perhaps this could be clarified for those who do wish to gain higher status in a more defined path.

Thanks.
Sembetu

BTW, would the increased revenue perhaps be able to provide for a fonts section here eventually?

I like the idea. Nice way to go.

Was imagining "worst-case-scenario" come NOV 1st [What?! Do without my daily visit to WC?!?] Thanks, everyone who consolidated the new system. So far, It's great. Also(!): The hat/shirt/etc idea sounds excellent. I visit two sites a day, and they're both important to my well-being: WC and skinnalicious. Whew! Relief, for now... .

It just hit me... what is my status if I have both the entire object desktop subscription and the WC subscription(2 yrs) as well?

Brad, I am very pleased that you went through with all of this. There is not one part of what you said that I do not agree with.

Very, very, well thought out.

I can't say I don't like the new planned direction of wc. not sure if it's not even a good thing the subscription drive didn't work out.

subscribed out of guilt, me. I'm a little lost as to how i can help though, anytime i send money for coputer related stuff i do a direct deposit. pay pal is the devil's work! and don't get me started on credit cards, hoo boy.

Anyway, i live in a tropical paradise, in far north eastern australia, a land of coral reefs, rainforest gardens and blazing sunsets of amber and gold I do some freelance photography and I've just had a play with login studio, trying to create my first login screen (it worked but i need to resize and change the windows gui for usernames.) I can see me becoming a contributor of wallpaper and login bootskin content, beyond that, the skinning is all a bit hard to work out just yet.

I fully empathise with the stardock people's server woes. people seem to think file storage and page serving is handeled by magical internet elves. I don't think adding to the available content is as much of a help as it is a hinderence, but what can ya do? I'll send you a few sticks of 64Mb pc133 ram for the server

I'd gladly pay for more product if there was a system in place to pay via bank deposit. There ya go, a little feedback from a mad aussie.

Top work by the way to the people involved in keeping this baby running.

Ditto Ditto....New plans sound great. I knew you guys (and gal's if any) would figure it all out.
I will be a subscriber just as long as Stardock and WinCustomize are around. I love this place and all the people involved here..... Thank-You

Hmmm ... Let me clear one thing ... Access Levels are based on the performance !!! Higher levels require More responsiveness and participation from the user. Some of those JourneyMen achieved the level because they are/were active skinners, some achieved it by their participation in Forums, Some got it through Article Writing ... AND some were allowed the Access because of OFF-THE-CURTAIN Support (Like Software Development, Game Character Design, Innovative Idea) ... NO Un-due respect is given to ANY community member here. You deserver where you should (NO OFFENSE @ ALL) ...

Wish you be a JourneyMan some-day. Neither I nor ANY-ONE else was JourneyMan, Master, Mod, or Admin by the time they joinned WC. They were all CITIZINS but through hard-work and continuous struggle, they achieved the level where they are now.

Wishing you all the best

Since they are two separate identities ... you have ONE YEAR in total for both ODNT and WC Subsription when you buy them (even if you buy them alltogether) ... Renwal fee for ODNT is 35 US$ (for 1 next year) and 20 US$ for WC Subsription (for 02 Years instead of one year) ...

I think there would be some plans for such deal ... but it is ONLY my guess (NOTHING OFFICIAL)

Nothing worry about ... you CAN use all WC by actively particpating in forums, helping the fellow community members, giving nice remarks on skinns, and posting some really good articles ... ALL WAYS ARE OPEN FOR YOU ...
to expound on this further also it would be nice if the authors who are making $ off the proposed refferal/sub plan could "if they choose" to add to the kitty with a percentage of their WC revenues to help "sponsor" newcomers...

to me. any $ I may get from anything I upload I would rather spend at the store or dontate to helping aspireing skinners..

I couldn't agree with you more JourneyMan HG Eliminator!
I too would rather donate what I may/might make from uploads to WC so as to help up and comming skinners.

This would be more true on a free board/download site. Especially on game boards/forums, however with a paid subscription I would think we paid subscribers can bypass all that. Whats the purpose of having a paid subscription to a site if we are only allow limited access. Not fair to spend money on something you cannot get full value for. IMHO.

There are also people who are not listed as subscribers and have little or nothing posted who have higher access classes. It just doesn't add up. If I were offered an opportunity to help in a so called "OFF-THE-CURTAIN" way I would, and not for higher access class, but only because I consider this work fun, and I perform it as such...regardles of the time it consumes. It is the same reason I am a member of various internet development groups, ie. ISOC, ASRG, IETF, various Adobe, Macromedia, CSS, and Developer forums etc. My time is almost completely consumed with the Internet and it's associated related technologies, and has been since about 1997-8.

In any regard, I like the new changes proposed, and I will continue to subscribe, and I plan on contributing more as I have in the past. Like I said, it just doesn't add up to me, and I think it should be less vague and more clearly pathed, particularly where the matter of incentive is concerned. I mean, we are paying for this service, and we are subject to it's restrictions. Shouldn't we also be subject equally to it's rewards?

Are there any intentions of time limiting the shareware versions of the SD apps? Personally, it's infuriating to see people come on here and talk about their use of the *free* version of WB and that they should be able to download all the skins they want cause they are using the app and yadda yadda yadda.. I personally think after 30 days (well, maybe 60) WB should disable itself and not allow a re-install. Heck, while you're at it have it require the user to have created a WC account and tie the demo to that account. If you are going through the trouble of making it more difficult to just sign up for multiple accounts you might as well leverage that work in as many places as possible...

I agree whole-heartedly. I'm glad that after all the talk there is finally some closure on this subject. I'm still not sure that i will be adding a wincustomze subscription to my OD subscription. Still not enough motivation.

Now if i was to get a nice wincustomze T-Shirt in 3xl with it i may change my mind.

lol well i guess you will have to bear with me for the long haul now (whats a good site without controversy? )

I'd like to see more and more features of WB stop funcioning as time goes on. At download day one EVERYTHING is skinned. Every day or week one element goes away. After 30 or 60 days a freeware user is left with Windows classic. That would learn 'em!
I think this is a good and fair start to help people see the advantages of subscribing to something as worthwhile as this. If you enjoy customizing your desktop as I do, WC and OD by Stardock are one of the best, "IF NOT THE BEST", values on the web. Not only will you own the software to do it, there are many fantastic artists who graciously donate their work (and the time it takes to make them)for us to use. I am an OD and WC subscriber and will continue to be for as long as they are available.

I couldn't agree more. Perhaps we could even have some software that functions a la DRM "https://www.wincustomize.com/Forums.aspx?ForumID=24&AID=90889#705005", that way we could be protected and paranoid at the same time! Wow, can we please...please...!?!?
