PidgeonPidgeon, Maybe the time tracking could be an option for those that want it or something only related to the Metaverse. Anyway my idea wasn't to make you start again with a L1 channeler each game. I'm hoping you'd be able to take your existing one forward from game to game. At 50 years of life and 52 weeks to a year that would be 2500+ turns of life. Maybe that's not enough for very large maps and it could be doubled to 5000 (allowing the channeler to age to 120 due to m

I'll apologize in advance for a long post and for possibly having missed some of the ideas in this post being discussed already. I'd really like to see the map influenced by time and weather. I know time has been discussed in another thread and the current idea is that 1 turn = 1 day. I dislike that idea and would like to propose the following: 1 turn = 1 week. This would then allow the game to actually keep track of semi-realistic time and allow such things as w

You can easily use Mass Drivers or Tidal or Core Detination to soften up the planets if you make sure to NOT send in fleets of transports with 2,3 4 or more thousand soldiers. The game has a nice 'cheese' factor built into the invasions such that as long as you don't conquer the planet with the troops none of the bad things happen (loss of PQ or destruction of buildings) that are listed. What I do is make mini-transports with

I prefer to send in the first transport (or maybe 2) with only 1000 men. That way I can use the 'cheese' tactic of mass drivers/core detination etc to give my initial wave of men a HUGE advantage so that most of the enemy is wiped out (esp since the AI rarely has more than 5 billion on it's planets). Then the 2nd transport attacks normally and wipes up the last few men on the planet. The 'cheese' factor is that as

The answer completely lies with with item being bought. In other words it's not a straight extra % you pay on each item. For example. If I click to rush buy a basic constructor I pay about a 20% penalty over actually building it (check the actual build costs in bc in the ship screen then compare to the cost of rush buying it). However for a custom medium sized military ship I designed the cost of building it was like 60

Sadly this is a well known problem. The manual is 'incorrect' according to Stardock (there is a VERY long thread on this very topic with exactly the problems your having) and your resources are indeed *wasted*. This was less an issue in Gal Civ I than in Gal Civ II where bonus production tiles and multiple factories can literally mean 1 super producer eats up 50+% of all social spending. My understanding is this is going to b

Wow. This is BY FAR one of the best threads I have read here. The information on the economy and wasted production was an eye-opener to me. I had that feeling that *something* wasn't right but I couldn't put my finger on it till I saw it all spelled out here plainly. It especially explains why when I go down to 10% social spending my newly acquired planets never actually produce anything because the big ones gobble up all the mon

OK if killing your enemy by any means possible isn't an evil act, then why is it evil when I kill those damn trees or bugs or whatever inhabits planets I colonize or my homeworld? I see ZERO difference between those 2 things. The game goes to great lengths to create artifical moral choices to define good/evil and yet ignores a nice moral delima built into every invasion. If using those invasion tactic's isn't evil then I don't want to be considered an evil civ for my colonization choice

I noticed a completely different AI problem than any mentioned here and one completely different than what Jbeuh mentioned about the AI early fleets. I was playing the campaign and the first 3 maps are tiny and small (sizes I had not yet played in my handful of random games). On the first map as soon as I got the tech to make military ships (defenders) I did so and the Drengin did too. I ended up getting killed by his mi

Spearthrower, I understand the exploiting issues with this. My question is why is it coded this way in the first place (it was identical in GalCiv 1 and I was hoping it would be addressed in part II). There's a lot that could be done here. For example your basically wreaking planetary havoc equivalent to dropping hundreds of nuclear warheads on Earth as a comparison. So: 1) Why is this not considered an evil act that moves your Civ toward evil?

Hi, I have a question related to planet invasions and a possible bug to report. When I get the invasion screen I have a number of choices from normal invasion to multiple stronger ones with planet wide effects. Here's my question/bug report. If I select anything like mass drivers/gas warfare/core detonation etc and my invasion fails, I don't actually harm the planet in any way. So this always leads

I take the Economists for my gov't (+20% econ) and add another +10% to econ with my starting points along with +30% research, +5% PQ and +10% diplomacy. I start out at 70/30 (military/research) and go comm theory, universal translators ... all the way to trade. AS SOON as I get the ability to build the diplomatic translator I switch to 20/60/20 (60% social) and get the translators at about 31 turns initially and keep things that way until I get those translators. In the meanwh

CariElf, Thanks for talking to Ian about my problem. The answer to your question is: Yes, I have to log onto my DSL (I hate DSL BTW but had to go to it after moving to an area where cable was not available) account but I log in immediately after booting my computer and stay connected 24/7 (well I attempt to but DSL has an annoying habit of logging people off when they least expect it which is why I tried an endless ping session). I hope the next update has a fix cause

Fine, I can accept that my factories are producing whether they are making anything or not but if that's the case, they why can't they make items to aid research? Ie. I'd like to see an option that says instead of "nothing" in the build queue to say "research" in which case the money would get spent on aiding research. I'm not asking for a 1:1 spending on research either, even 1:5 would be useful and more realistic. It just seems strange to be pumping out all that cash thru the economy for nothi

I'm sure I've read the answer to this one before but I've forgotten how it works. But what I want to know is where does all my money go with regards to social and military spending. For example, I'm in a very late game (about to begin researching Beyond Human) playing Crippling on a large map. I have about 20 star systems colonized/captured with about 25-30 planets overall. When I go to the spending screen I have Military spending at 25%, Social at 45% and Research at 30%. My spending i

CariElf, Thanks for the info on the fact that the routine you use to check for an internet connection is not detecting it my case now. But do you have any idea why that might be? Would it help if I set up an endless ping session in the background to the metaverse? There wouldn't happen to be some kind of initialization file someplace that still thinks I am connected via Cable instead of DSL? I'd like to try some things to fix this because I now have 3 saved games to submit to the metave

I posted this in a seperate thread where I said I am having submission problems to the metaverse in 1.05 but I'll add it here so the developers can more easily see it. I just upgraded from 1.03 to 1.05 and played a game on a medium map and achieved a military victory. The end game screens mentioned that my score was great and it would be the envy of others on the metaverse blah, blah, blah. Anyway, as I clicked thru the end game stats and finished with them I expected to

Um, I tried again today and still no luck. And yes, I can access the metaverse from the main menu screen. What I didn't mention before is that the game doesn't even take me to the submission screen. I just go directly from the end game stats back to the main menu. In 1.03 and earlier versions the game at least took me to the submission screen. I had just assumed this was gone in 1.05 and that you auto-submitted now until I saw someone else in this thread mention they go to that

Like Daniel I also see it after playing a long time. Because the saved games don't save all the current status's between empires I try not to shut down my game once it starts because otherwise when a game is re-loaded the AI's often make unpredictable moves for the first couple of turns. The result is the game may stay active for a couple of days (I just minimize using CTRL-ESC to get to other apps/check Email etc). My system for reference is a 1 Gig Athlon with a GeForce 2 card and 512

Yeah, I know this belongs in the general forum as opposed to the strategy forum but for some reason I can't seem to post or have the general forum update for me correctly. Anyway my problem is that some ship types seem to have disappeared from the screen. These ships are still there in that you can select them in the build screen but there is no picture of the ship, just the description. Also once the ship is built there is nothing showing on my screen. It's completely invisible and not

Actually if the minor race disappears from cultural conquest or military one you still get paid. That's been my experience. Last night (1.02 before I did the update) I was at war with the Torians who were down to their last system. I was about to culturally conquest it so I didn't bother sending in any troops. I got the message that their world defected to me and so they were out of the game. BUT, before the turn ended I went in and made peace with them and they agreed to pay me 100 bc

The bug reporting thread seems to have dipped off my Radar of threads so I decided to start a new one here to report 2 things I just saw last night. This happened while I was culturally conquesting the Yor. I culturally took over one of his planets. Meanwhile a few turns later I got notice that a freighter of his had arrived. I took a look at the trade route and sure enuff the route started from the Star I conquested and ended at one of my planets. The route was definitely his (purple c

I can't seem to update the GalCiv game itself from SDC. I was able to update the bonus pack and the multi-media versions but I'm never offered the opportunity to update GalCiv itself. I still only have 1.01 installed. Is there any other way to update besides SDC (ie a link I can just bookmark since SDC doesn't seem to be working for me (and yes, I have alpha/beta versions turned on) TIA TexasTim65 ~SDC~
