Isn't Enlightenment a skinnable desktop for Linux?

You could always try Solaris for the x86 platform....it's free too (for educational/non-commercial uses)

I had to install Mandrake Linux twice. I skipped over stuff the first time. Went over the steps more carefully the second time around and was pleasantly suprised with how compatible it was with my machine.

Linux still has a way to go in terms of user friendly installs and GUI interfaces. It's still for the computer hobbiest to try, not the Solitaire playing morons.

Hey..I play solitaire...

Whew, barely missed me, I'm a minesweeper playing moron...

I play solitaire sometimes. What I mean by "Solitaire playing morons" are your average users that don't understand operating systems and such. They are happy as long as they can play solitaire.

jj79_1999: what kind of desktop skinning are thinking about. if you think of skinning the windows you got these programs already running. both KDE and Gnome have skinnable window managers.
for KDE have a look here: http://www.kde-look.org
for Gnome: http://art.gnome.org
icon themes (that go far further than Icon Packager) are also supported.
cursors can also be skinned.
for something like DesktopX check Karamba: http://www.kde-look.org/index.php?xcontentmode=karamba&PHPSESSID=2e968caa15ef3031dca8ac8aea5d4c14

I have strange hardware, so it's a pain in the ass to get any *nix variant running on my machine.

Well, *nix runs, but X flunks all the time and I "hate" working on a machine through console only...

Anyhow, back to LiteStep.
