Reposting from another thread, as the thread was poorly named, and thus perhaps someone who can help me wouldn't have read it. I have installed GalCiv from CD on a Win2000 system. I've installed Stardock, installed the 1.02 patch and bonus pack. When I go into Stardock to do the update to 1.03A it fails. During the downloading of galciv.ex_ the status goes nuts, going well past 100% before failing. When I do fail, this is what my log looks like: ... Extract File: C

I got a whole bunch of friends who are long time Stars! players that I'm in the process of converting. Most are salivating (but need a computer upgrade) some have already placed the order... All Canadians of course, and soon to join our Empire.
JS Giguere played Junior in Halifax when I still lived there. It's taken him awhile, but he's finally emerged as the star everyone thought he could be.
No luck. It was worth a try. I guess I'll wait for the standalone versino of 1.03, and just use 1.02 in the meantime. I'm pretty sure it's a problem with Stardock not GalCiv. While downloading galciv.ex_ it just seems to go nuts, and downloads data 5-10 times more than the size of the file, and then goes wonky.
Michael, I did all that except the reboot. What the heck, I'll uninstall and try all over again with the reboot, just in case.
Don't forget to join the Empire Mark. In case you don't know how, goto the Metaverse. Select Top Empires on the left, choose "A Canadian Odyssey" and join. If we're not in the top 25 anymore, search, but we are right now.
Here's dreaming to a Sens / Canucks final.
I have only played on Bright yet, and although they do detect you building cultural starbases in their systems, if you do it really fast and hit like a hammer, they often don't have time to complain. For example last night, I went into a Torian sector where he had 5 planets. I brought in 30+ constructors, and build at least 5 super cultural starbases in a single turn. Then I maxed out on my destabilization of the Torian race, and within 2-3 turns, the first planet revolted, and then it
I was wondering, because I brought it in to work so I could play at lunch hour or after work, but when I connect to Stardock it doesn't upgrade properly. The status starts going nuts, and counting beyond 100% complete, and then eventually fails. The end of the log reads as follows: ... I even traded it to the same guy 2 or 3 times. Can't remember for sure. I did do it to at least 3 different races too. Would it have any effect if the race I traded it to was in really deep trouble in a war with someone else and really liked me? I traded only with weaker races, for fear I'd make an enemy with the more powerful Torians if I tried it with them. This was on "Bright" intelligence if it matters. It was the last game I submitted if you get enough information from l
Last night I was able to trade a planet away 5-6 times to the different AIs in return for a whack load of tech. The catch was it was in a sector with my homeworld and another planet, and many cultural updates and culturally maxed out starbase. So I was able to aquire the tech, and within 3-4 turns the planet would of course simply revolt back to me anyway. I repeated this many times. The only issue I had was when one of them demanded I give them the starbase since I was clearly trying
I hereby invite all my fellow Canucks to join me in my Canadian Odyssey! Drop a line to let us know where you hail from. I'm originally from Atlantic Canada (all over it) but now reside in Ottawa.
People keep talking about selling the trade goods on the lease-to-own plan to the AIs. What kind of money are you getting from the computer? I'm more interested to know what you're getting for the first couple you sell since that will be earlier in the game where diplomatic advantages will be more similar. I want to know if I'm getting anywhere near what I should be. On "Bright", I'm able to get 10 cred / 70-150 years depending on the individual AI I'm dealing with and our curr
I just beat normal for the first time two nights ago. I switch to bright for the first time last night. My first game was going well, until the Arcean used my own cultural strategy against me before I could do it to him. (we were intertwined from the start). So I had a quick re-start. I won it on my 2nd try, but I did get a pretty good starting spot (without CTRL-N). I switched from Medium to Large maps, and I find it makes it a lot easier. I find on smaller maps everything is a lot le
I guess it may depend on your difficulty level, but I was finished aa medium map in a couple hours. I finished a large map in 3 hours last night, but that's when I decide the AI settings were too low. I moved them up again, and I still finished the large in less than 3 hours tonight. Although in fairness, I'm always fast at games. I am not efficient, I probably could do a lot better if I took my time, but I'm still winning so far. I'm only at Challenging so far though, although I may t

I had this happen last night, but I ignored it because they were already under attack by the more powerful Drengin. I assumed the Drengin were going to win (which they did) and was preparing for the all-out cultural attack on the later victorious Dregin. I timed it well and by the time he was done with them, he was too late to save himself.
Maybe they keep the class 12 planets? I find with the class 3 planets they just disband them the following turn.
Why class 12? I use class 3 for this purpose.
One thing I've started to realize is that I think the game is a lot harder on tiny-medium maps, not to mention that the game plays completely differently. A lot of the tips you will read from experienced players here, which are excellent, don't necessarily work that well in small universes. For example, putting all your resources into military and pumping out colony ships isn't necessarily that helpful in a small universe where there is only a handful of planets, that the computer playe
yes, to me this is very easy to fix. Looking at other similar games, when you run out of projects you can simply choose where such resources go. Off the top of my mind having the choice to redirect it to the treasury or reseach seems obvious. Although as a really quick and easy fix, simply sending the unused resources back to the treasury solves everything and would not require much work. (at least doesn't appear to) I mean, if you've allocated money to a social project, and didn't spen
Near the end of the game it's not uncommon for me to have 5-6 starbases in a sector. These are usually with 5 cultural upgrades as well. (Culture Maximization and Cultural Palace) They may also have defensive upgrades if I expect resistance. In my large game last night I had probably 30 starbases (not counted those I disbanded to save money) and 40-50 more constructors on route when the computer AI was absorbed. I tend to win by cultural victory though, so this is the typical
Thanks for the advice guys. Last night I got my first victory on Normal in a medium galaxy, I know that doesn't sound like much to the experienced players but for me it was a big step. My favorite part of the game was when the biggest empire (I was 2nd at the time) Drengin joined a war against the Torians, who randomly decided to attack me, to defend me (I was trading heavily with him at the time). At the time I was setting up constructors to culturally assimilate him. Oh, and I bought
Oops, just noticed the link on the side for strategy! Also forgot another problem. Not so sure why but in the mid game my people are so upset with me I can't seem to get any significant taxes out of them.
