For me usability centers around providing the maximum functionality with the minimum of interference. Acryllic from the 2006 GUI Champs is still one of the most usable skins I've ever loaded. It looked good, but didn't get in the way of anything I was trying to do. Skins that use lots of flashy stuff, bouncy bits, crazy animations or wacky colors/textures distract from the usability of the system. Skins that are the most usable look great while giving you exactly wha

It was actually kinda painful for me to reject some of the skins and icons I did. So many were inches away from qualifying and possibly winning, but the authors didn't do what was required to enter. And I understand the desire to get these skins, but that's going to have to be up to the authors now on how they want to distribute them

Just so everyone knows how I'm judging: Usability: I value readability highly. A usable icon set for me is one I can quickly scan to figure out what files and folders are in front of me. I don't want to be confused between a word document and an aspx file. If I'm running at medium/small size, can I still tell what they are? Does it cover the major items on my desktop? Common filetypes, folders (live folders are also a consideration).&nb

Another point on the whole vista, number of icons, number of filetypes supported issue... Lets say there are only 10 icon sets submitted. 6 of those include live folders. 4 of them don't. Those 6 artists put in additional effort to make their entry BETTER. Should we ignore that extra effort to make a better overall icon pack?

The technical requirements for the competition represent the MINIMUM NEEDED TO ENTER. Those who just put in the minimum bits will not do as well as those who go the extra mile. This competition not only tests the artistic talents of those entering, but their technical skills and their attention to detail and desire to go above and beyond to truely excell. Many skinners put in live folders, many skinned 90+ icons. They weren't told anything different or specia

Rejected skins will not be re-added to the contest galleries. The galleries on this site are only for showcasing valid contest entries. We welcome users to submit their work to WinCustomize, which will actually get them greater exposure, but we will not add them here. It's unfortunate that some skins didn't make the cut, and believe me some were given multiple chances with instructions on exactly what to change. But everyone had an equal and fair chance of being incl

With the judging and user voting phases for the WindowBlinds and IconPackager categories coming up early next week, tonight is the final deadline for all submissions to the 2008 GUI Championships. At 11:59pm EST, the server will stop accepting new uploads of Dreams, Icons and WindowBlinds skins, and will also no longer accept updates to posted skins. This means if you have any changes, you're runnin

11:59pm EST (as the server marks it) to get the file into moderation. Honestly, I wouldn't wait too long to upload it. If anything goes wrong, you want wiggle-room on the clock, and a chance that there's still a developer in the office to fix things :)
Unfortunately as the tool we use to handle uploads isn't updated for Flash 10 yet (it's still beta) there isn't much we can do at the moment. Most people would have auto updated adobe had they been notified so the timing of the flash 10 upgrade really sucks. I could not figure out how to get back to 9 safely so I have to upload from a different machine. No biggie for me but I am sure there are others that are having a bat
I have to say, even if it was ready, I've recieved (0) support here ( http://forums.guichamps.com/327396 ) and here ( https://forums.wincustomize.com/330946 ) so, I couldn't upload anyways.
Unfortunately as the tool we use to handle uploads isn't updated for Flash 10 yet (it's still beta) there isn't much we can do at the moment.

Following up on the Most Usable winners, as announced a few days ago, today we have the winners of the Most Original Dreams for the 2008 GUI Championships. The short version is ChaNinja and TheMasterBaron are dominating the Dream events, once again securing all three spots between the two of them. Just like with Most Usable, ChaNinja takes the top spot. Now all that's left is the Best Overall

We wanted to keep the icon competition as open to XP users as possible. The requirement of 256x256 sized icons was in consideration for Vista. Live Folders would have pushed out a lot of XP-based artists. And XP is the vast majority of our users on this site. In fact, over 65% of our traffic to the GUIC site is from XP users.
