I always thought Apple had a good price point on their OS upgrades. Something like $150 isn't unreasonable for this type of product. Based on my experiences with the Win7 beta so far, I'll probably upgrade to it (from Vista) when it launches later this year.

We're looking into it right now.
I'm betting that Windows 7 won't have the software compatibility problems transitioning from Vista that we saw from XP to Vista. Vista and 7 are the same core OS, 7 just has a lot of improvements. I'm actually debating making the upgrade from Vista to 7 at home shortly after 7 comes out (I only went to vista on my home PC within the last 6 months).
Karma points are given to users by users who feel a thread or comment are particularly helpful/informative. The idea is to let users reward others for being helpful and contribute something worthwhile to the discsussion. The points don't get you anything, they're more of a "warm fuzzy" feature.
Patches for Sins can be downloaded through Impulse ( http://www.impulsedriven.com/impulse_setup.exe ). If you purchased the game at retail, you can register your serial number to your Stardock account within Impulse. Once registered you can download the latest version of the game. You'll also be able to redownload the full game whenever you like, so it won't matter if you lose the CD.
General Announcement: Cogent will be conducting network maintenance at several of it's datacenters overnight tonight, including ones where some Stardock Servers are housed. Between 10:00pm on 1/19 and 6:00am on 1/20 there will be brief periods of down-time and slow connections over the course of the maintenance. This down-time will affect all Stardock sites & servers including (but not limited to): WinCustomize.com DemigodTheGame.com
A follow-up, since there seems to be some confusion over how the whole wincustomize site is broken apart and what is actually part of the main site and what isn't... WinCustomize as users experience it has three components: WinCustomize Main (www, skin galleries, uploading, downloading, skin pages, skin comments) Personal Pages (i.e. zoomba.wincustomize.com, has photo galleries, guestbook features, stats etc) Forums (forums.wincustomize.com)</l
So are you saying that the forums site it's self is going to remain basically the same with all of it's current problematic issues?
If time permits, we may be able to address some forum issues. But the only thing we can really say for sure is that the visuals of the forum will be changed to match the site itself (headers, colors, footers, links etc).
A note for everyone. WinCustomize Site is not the same as WinCustomize Forums. Two different sets of code, two completely different projects. While the look and feel of the new WC will likely be brought over to the forums, this update project isn't about extending or changing forum functionality. If some gets in when we're not looking, that's cool, but I wouldn't expect it.
I got a look at the larger site mockups (unobscured, full of goodness) before I left the office tonight. They look damn nice :)
The games we've released so far are just a drop in the bucket of Paradox Goodness we have in store for everyone here. If there is a Paradox game you've been debating picking up, hold off a bit longer. It just might show up here before too long. Per the original announcement, we're getting most of the Paradox catalog. So chances are good that game you're looking for will be available here soon. Yes, that includes EU III :D Edit: I speel gud</
It's not uncommon that a codebase of 500 KLOC has something like 200 lines of platform specific code. That's less than 1% of the work and sales do increase by more than 1%. So, the amount of work cannot be the reason. Very often, as in the case of GC2, it is the desire to code platform specific and nothing else. Gaming on netbooks, at the moment, isn't really an option unless you're going for older games. To hit the size and price range they need, they don't tend to have very powerful innards. Low-end graphics cards, slower CPUs and less RAM. If you want to game, your best option is a desktop. Followed by a beefy notebook. Netbooks aren't designed to be game machines currently.
One by one, they all come to us :)
I've had an install of Win7 since last Friday, and it's pretty nice so far. Some of it's default UI options bug me, but that's just a matter of taste. I'm very impressed with what I've seen so far though. Vista betas at this stage usually had me tearing my hair out in frustration. This build is actually usable for regular surfing, email etc.
does this include people that are still using IE6
That's like saying we're forcing people to abandon Windows 95. The problem is that a given browser version can't be supported indefinitely. Every time a new browser version is released, sites have to change up how they're coded to take the new versions into account. A line has to be drawn somewhere, and IE6 is on the other side when we do major site projects. There is a point of diminishing re
The core point remains that developing major game for Linux (along side of a Windows version) is a big undertaking unless you're on OpenGL from the start, with a lot of financial unknowns. A lot of risk for an unknown reward. Additional QA, additional support (community-provided support isn't a viable option for a retail product), additional developer time & training. There's a lot of cost wrapped up in there. You can say that you're sure there'd be tons of peopl
Generally people tend to over-estimate the windows gamer market and underestimate the GNU/Linux market. Most windows users are not gamers and most games are not made for windows. GNU/Linux has estimates from 1%-5% of the PC market. That's a few million people, of these millions, say a couple of hundred thousands are also gamers. Trust you me, that these gamers will reward developers who look to their side in order to provide an incentive to keep doing so.
The problem is
The DVD version of Sins of a Solar Empire has no DRM. There is no code in the game, or on the disc that limits what a user can do with it. Install it all you like. Play it all you like. The problem you're running into is that we do not support used copies. We are not limiting your ability to use your purchased game. We are simply not providing you support or any post-release content. You get what you paid for, but nothing else. With Sin

My girlfriend and I are about to head out the door to a friend's NYE party. Lots of food, lots of wine, and probably more than a few ridiculous party games. Should be a good time. Catch you all in 2009!
This year's theme was kitchen goodness: 10 Piece Wustof Knife Set w/Block Cuisinart Hand Blender Wine Decanter Parents managed to find a Wii Fit to go with the Wii they bought when I was visiting over Thanksgiving. I want a Wii Fit now.
AzDude: Chances are you won't see any updates on that page until Jan 5th at the earliest. We're all on vacation at the moment.
Impulse experiences some server issues earlier today that have resulted in some problems with downloads. Our server gurus are working on the issue, and we expect to have things sorted out soon. But since it's Christmas Eve, this may not be an immediate fix. Right now, please try to be patient as we work things out. If the problem persists past Dec 26th, please email
