Also, make sure the built in winxp firewall is disabled. From the Local Area Conection Properties, Advanced tab, make sure "Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet" is un-checked. This built in firewall can cause many many odd problems.

It is the worm referred to in this thread: https://www.wincustomize.com/msgboard.asp?BID=WC&id=176083 It started really spreading around this morning/last night. You can protect yourself against it by getting the windows update critical update Q331953 or by blocking port 135 on your computer.

Monitors should be good for many years as long as you don't get the absolutely cheapest model, like my friend made the mistake of doing. He went through 4 monitors in one year (under warantee luckily) before he got fed up and bought a decent monitor.

Actually, I believe the "show desktop" command only sends a minimize command to applications showing on the task bar, so if trillian isn't on the task bar or can't be minimized, it will do nothing.

Color RGB(255,0,255) (a bright pinkish color) is most commonly used to mark areas meant to transparent for bmps, try that.

I found that wa2 fit all my needs, I tried wa3 when it first came out, but it was at least twice as slow on my machine (especially with playlist functions). I found all the fancy skinning only wasted space on my screen and didn't add any functionality, in fact it took away most uniform functionality which made wa3 harder to use. Plus there are a few nice little functions on wa2 that I always use that didn't make it wa3, like the "stop after current song" function.

If it really is the nvidia driver's fault, you may be able to increase stability or even fix the problem by going to display properties-settings tab, advanced button-troubleshooting tab and turning down hardware acceleration. The settings there will turn of video card acceleration of the windows (like cursor and other image acceleration in windows). Try turning acceleration all the way down first and stpe it up slowly if there are no problems.

well, this is how I optimize (about every few months): 1. Use BootVis to trace all files accessed during start-up. 2. Defrag with PerfectDisk (from norton suite) using BootVis data to layout start-up files in order at the beginning of the drive. It works wonders, cut my start-up time in WinXP from 55 sec. to 35 sec.
