nvidia graphics cards and playing dvd's

following the new hard drive, and installing winXP pro, last night i wanted to watch one of my DVD's on my PC.

so, i installed PowerDVD 4, and put in the DVD. however, it will not play the DVD, since macrovision has decided that there is a problem with the TV out on my video card

i tried two different DVD's, both of which worked fine before the reinstall. hover, i was using 23.11 nvidia drivers then.

i have never used the TV out on my nvidia gforce2 MX card, and DVD playback worked fine before the reinstall of windows.

i did find a suggestion on google groups that the latest nvidia drivers (i am using 44.03) cause a problem with the TV out, which means you cannot play DVD's. that doesnt sound right, but then again...

the only suggestion i found at nvidia's website (since their own DVD player (i downloaded the trial version) fails) was that it is either a cable problem, or a driver problem.

does anyone else know anything about this? i would like to beleive nvidia cannot be listing the 44.03 drivers as certified and all wonderful if they are this broken.

Yes, its known problem NVIDIA have broken this since New Detonator40 series.

I can't remember where i read it think it was Guru3D.com, that they know about it and will only be fixing it for newer cards that come out in the market.

Best bet is to try another driver like 30.82, this was quite a popular driver, the set im on the now thats working so far with DVD *touch wood* is 43.45.

so, nvidia know that no one with one of their cards can watch DVD's and they arent doing anything about it

thats it then. if my video card really is dead (see other thread) then i am NOT getting a nvidia card to replace it.

to add insult to injury i cannot get the "driver archive" link at nvidia's web page to work. the only way i can get them to give me a link to an old driver is to search for the driver number >

of course, to do this i need to know the driver number i want to download....

at least i have 2 OS's on my main machine, so i can play around with different video drivers under win98 in order to try and get one that works without upsetting winXP in the process.

of course, that then means i need to reboot to watch my DVD's, but it will do for now.

however, the first order of buisness is to get the machine working again.

also make sure your DVD drive isnt in PIO mode - control panel, system, hardware manage - drive controllers - secondary (usually) and see what mode they are in - should be dma something

feline - well, after 2 days of playing around to find out what happened to my DVD and losing video play in Media Player here's what I came up with. If you don't have either of these installed , then it's not your problem (and you can stop reading ). If you have RealPlayer installed, un-install it. If you have Netscape installed, un-install it (it has a RealPlayer plug-in attached to it and the browser won't be around much longer anyway). Un-install your DVD proggie, what ever you use (I use WinDVD4)...and reboot. Re-install your DVD proggie and re-boot. If you're really lucky you should be able to watch a movie...good luck

well, i have real player installed on winXP.
however, i got exactly the same error on win98 (dual boot) and real player isnt installed over there.

i tried 3 different DVD player programs, all of which returned a macrovision error to do with the TV out on my video card.

/me adds this to my list of things to try once the machine starts booting once more

well, i now have DVD playback working on win98!!!

i had to uninstall the 44.03 detonator drivers and install some earlier ones. 40.xx did the job!

so, over the next couple of days i will do the same on winXP (my main OS) and see if that fixes DVD playback there.

/me is still slightly stunned that nvidia have so totally broken DVD playback on many of their cards with the latest sets of drivers

Jus a note : Another problem on XP could be ObjectDock, if installed. When You have it set to autohide, the only thing You will get with movie playback is a black screen...

c242, i dont use ObjectDock, so that is one less thing to think about have you reported that to stardock support?

I have been having lots of problems with the 44.03 drivers. Even uninstalling them was a pain & i used "nasty file remover". To make a long story short, i found some beta drivers 44.61 at ... http://www.detonators.net/ on the left of the page ( newest files). Also found winxp 64-bit drivers 55.08 at ....http://www.techconnect.nl/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=8

well, other than the "minor" problem of no DVD playback i didnt seem to be having any problems with the 44.03 drivers.

however, since my PC is my DVD player, i needed to fix that

the 44.03 seemed to uninstall OK for me under winXP, and installing the 40.xx fixed DVD playback. i think i will leave my video drivers alone for now, since the basics are currently working
