To disable ToolTips in Windows XP: 1) Open the Registry Editor 2) Navigate to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop. 3) Double-click UserPreferencemask and change its value to 3E 00 00 00. 4) Close the Registry Editor and restart Windows. werewolf- if you feel daring try this one........... <img src="http://images.stardock.com/images/smiles/n
The only program I know of that effects menus is FX 2.0...if you have it, unload it and see what happens...
am not sure what you mean about not using NTFS. winXP is using NTFS. XP setup gives you the option to use either Fat32 or NTFS...make sure your format is jiving with your install....... /me thinks we should take up a collection, come to your house and fix this damn machine <img src="http://images.stardock.com/images/smiles/jokegrim.gif"
just made a post and don't know where it went... let's try again... feline...forget the Win98 boot disk...go into bios and change 1st boot device to CD rom. After XP installs and starts to re-boot, go into bios and change 1st device back to HDD. <img src="http://images.stardock.com/images/smiles/sb.gif" border=0 AL
V4 is only the update engine...........
dump the 1 update first and see what that does and then go after SP1
Yes, my machine took it (although I did have to go back in and get 811493 out). Take your Windows Update OFF auto. You can run a manual listing of updates after you un-install SP1 and see if there are any that you might really need on your machine (although that's easier said then done). If you install any of them set a Restore Point before you install it, that way if it causes a problem you can go right back........ <A HREF="https://www.wincustomize.com/index.asp?Cmd=full&New
/me thinks that deserves a little flash of font...
I surfed around for awhile and came up with this.......I have not tried this, so try at your own risk............ Q. How do I disable the tooltips in Windows XP and Windows 2000 for the Minimize, Maximize, and Close buttons? A. XP and Win2K display a tip when you position the mouse on the Minimize, Maximize, or Close button. To disable this functionality, perform the following steps: Start the registry editor (regedit.exe). Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\D
well crissy, I'll tell you what...if you find how let ME know because I would just as soon get rid of mine too /me was happy just to get rid of ballons popping [Message Edited]
Your old files (XP System Files) had to be saved before you installed update...it's only going to change those files..nothing else. All your personal files are safe no matter where they are.
I just noticed you said 'drop-down menus' in OD....ahhh...what drop down menus???
People ran their machines a long time with no problems before SP1 came out and considering your machine doesn't run with it, I would say you would be better off without it....... [Message Edited]
Crissy....is this the registry hack you tried ? Registry Settings User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ Advanced] Value Name: EnableBalloonTips Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value) Value Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled) <img src="http://images.stardock.com/images/smiles/sb.gif" border=0 ALIGN="absmiddle" ALT="Powered by SkinBrowser!"
leave it there...on some PC's SP1 (in either flavor) badly degraded performance. As long as you archived old files when you installed the service pack you can un-install it. I would try that and see what you get insofar as performance returning to normal. If it fixes the problem, run without it. <img src="http://images.stardock.com/images/smiles/sb.gif" border=0 ALIGN="absmiddle" ALT="Powered by SkinBrowser!"
