I like Google a lot (I use Google Chrome) but I wouldn’t want them to be the only game in town.
but but YOURE the only skinning app in town!!! (well, that's worth mentioning anyway). Hopefully you're awareness of dangers of monopolies means you'll keep treating your customers right :)

Best possible option I would say is limit the characters someone can play as a demo, but let them match up against any player so they would see the other characters (which might influence a purchase). This may lead to people cracking the game, BUT since they have to go through Impulse to play online, you should be able to see if they have a legit purchased key (not a generated one) and not allow them to pick another character if it's a generated key right?
I really need some clarification on this.
In short: Goo sets the stage to eliminate the “what if they go out of business, do I still get to play my game?” problem
So, does the verification take place on the game publisher's servers? If verification is going on on impulse reactor, who does verification if Stardock Impulse goes out of business. There's a good chance stardock won't go ou
Wait, so if authentification is all on the publisher, why is Reactor bundled with the game exe in an encryted format? What features are added in that encrypted exe taht are not part of the original game?
I hope you paid for a legal copy anyway while you pirated. I'm sure the developers appreciate not getting paid for their work.
Any chance we will get a transcript or mp3/slides of your talk brad? (For the people that couldn't go to GDC this year)
I'm confused about the first point. Do you mean some retailer offers to "sell" 1million copies at $1 by basically buying 1 million copies from you for $1 and then selling however many copies they can at their retail chains? Also, yes to the piracy issue. Going after pirates by making it harder to pirate doesn't WORK. They still find a way around it. But it does make things annoying as heck for legitimate buyers. So who cares how many copies t
Brad, I am also on an SSRI and have similar side effects. Basically I tend suffer from OCD and while random things still pop up in my mind that I should obsess about (like looking over source code for something way too many times), i also care less about the object of my obsession now so I just let it go. I think this is a common effect of all SSRIs. It sounds kind of like an effect of the SSRI you are taking.
Out of curiousity, what other game designers would you consider good also? I consider Sid Meier another really good designer because of the mechanics and balance he gets out of his games (not including the games that just have his name on it for marketing). Molyneaux I would consider not good because his ideas outweigh his actual implementations usually imo.
I don't think I'm a particularly good game designer, I'm just a very very experienced gamer so I tend to have a feel for what game mechanics will work in practice.
I'd say that's what makes a good game designer to me: understanding what game mechanics work and create a balanced game. And having really good AI helps in the games you guys make alot too because they are mainly strategy games (as opp
Speaking purely of myself, I've never thought of myself as having a massive IQ.
I'd say you have a massive game creating IQ. ;) GC2 / SoaSE ftw. I guess demigod is more GPG's puppy, but are you working on the AI in demigod also?
This is an interesting sub-discussion in itself, and intelligence as it's accepted by the majority in the psychology field (and this doesn't mean it's RIGHT, but just what the majority believe) in the psychology field is a general intelligence factor (g) that's composed of two subfactors crystallized intelligence (gC) which does measure acquired knowledge or long-term memory and fluid intelligence (gF) which is basically pattern recognition and problem solving. These are usually the mai
Brad, Do you agree with most of ayn rand's objectivism? It sounds that way from your post (eg rational self interest)
I disagreee with some points in your post brad, but not any of the major points you're trying to get across. But what I don't get is...why do you say any of those 3 things is unPC to talk about? If anyone is offended by any of those, they are a loser imo. For example, for point #1, every team effort needs some superstars to truly excel...if any person that is not a superstar on the team is offended, I think they need to grow up.
Brad, have you looked or played dominions 3? very crude graphics...but interesting take on the ai for your soldiers....basically you control the 'god' character and the ai acts our your customized pre-set orders for your soldiers. Was a very fun game (tho quite 'hardcore') and might give you some good ideas on the how to handle battles in elemental. looking forward to elemental.
Brad, I like the last 2! The first one, with most of the box image blurred except for the fist...is slightly headache inducing. It probably is the most correct physically...since the demigods are huge and so the depth of view should cause the rest of the body to be blurry....but it makes me feel like my eyes need to get checked. Personally, like the last one! I'm a sucker for good pixel art.
Brad, Is there somewhere one could download the impulse reactor sdk or documentation about the api? I can't seem to find it anywhere on impulsedriven.com...curious about how to work with it (mainly for fun...I'm not a professional developer or anything).
Brad, For really long flights I take ambien and it knocks me out for the entire flight. Of course, no good if you need to be functional during a flight :)
I wish I had seen the fireworks before they got deleted.
That looks awesome. Being the tech geek that you are, you probably already know about this, but TED has almost all their talks on youtube...most are pretty interesting (the ones that aren't too preachy).
I agree with the basic premise that there should be competition in any capitalist society. I simply disagree the point that Valve is doing anything "bad" with steamworks really. They released basically an "API" of sorts to let developers use the features in Steam that Valve initially used Steam for. Their goal probably being, they want to have *their* product as the de facto "standard" in the industry to try to gain the biggest segment of the market that
If I was wrong in my assumption brad and you would not intentionally change the format of windowblinds skins to make it more difficult to be reverse engineered and used by a competitor, please correct me. The basic idea of my analogy seems correct to me. But if you genuinely wouldn't make intentional changes in say windowblinds skin format in the hypothetical scenario I mention, then I would be wrong about Stardock being totally the same as valve and it'd be o
That's really not a valid analogy. There's nothing stopping someone from making a skinning application (there are other skinning applications) to compete with say WindowBlinds.
Ah, yeah, I mean, I would assume there would be their own format too. But imo, a major way to make a small dent in the skinning marketplace would be to make it compatible with Windowblinds skins since Windowblinds h
I'm all for competition Brad, but the only thing I see with Steamworks is that they're trying to solidify their piece of the market share. This is a serious question and not a "jab" at you. If there was a new skinning application that was cheaper (since it' would be the new guy on the block) and can use windowblinds formatted skins, would you allow that to continue or would you try to change the format in a way that makes it more difficult for the new application to
What features do you plan on adding to the Pro version Brad?
