Starkers, is your Crucial M.2 SSD NVMe? If not, you ought to consider saving your pennies to get one. NVMe uses PCIe lanes, up to 4 and has a theoretical data rate of 32Gb/ sec compared to SATA based SSD's which are 6Gb/sec. Also, check out your M.2 slots. They are not always the same; some motherboards have one (NVMe) that connects directly to the CPU. As well, sometimes you have to configure the slot to be 4X rather than the default 2X in the BIOS. Check the Manuel (he's from Barcelona) for your motherboard. I have a Gigabyte X299 Gaming 9. It has 8 slots for ram, and there is a chart in the manual showing where to put the sticks which depends on how many you have. I have 4 16GB sticks and where they are placed makes a difference. Quad channel allows the CPU to use 4 times as much RAM at one time If you have 4 sticks (in the correct slots); that 's why you are better off having 4 8GB sticks rather than 2 16GB sticks.

Does your board support quad channel RAM? If so, you might be a bit better off with the 4 sticks instead of 2, depending on your CPU having enough lanes. I have an X299 MB which has 8 RAM slots, and it turns out that RAM placement is critical; every second one instead of 4 together in my situation. (It always helps to read the manual). My builder didn't know about that, so I would have ended up with 2 channels of RAM instead of 4 if I hadn't noticed. I'd say that 32 gigs of RAM is ple

I have just sprung big bucks for an Intel i9 with a Gigabyte x299 gaming 9 motherboard, 64 GB of 2666Mhz RAM, 2 Samsung 960 Pro 1 TB SSD's (in RAID 0, for a 2TB drive at twice the speed, and in M.2 slots, a newish higher speed bus), and an adequate graphics card (GTX 1050).
