A New Catagory For Skinning?

A New Catagory For Skinning?

~Hi

I'll just be brief and not really intending to point fingers at anyone.

But after viewing a few snitty comments on some WB skins ( and I'll remind everyone that blinds are shared and if you don't like it, don't download it, simple )

The real Topic here is what about starting a catagory for " New Skinners "

Several of the " women " of WC have their own little test group. Others don't have that pleasure of being able to test their work before uploading it.

Wouldnt it be nice to be able to upload a skin just to see if your doing anything RIGHT rather than being told everything thats wrong..or worse yet, being laughed at by people that forget they once had to start somewhere .

Im happy with just tweaking others blinds. Way too much involved in skinning an entire blind.

But..a catagory that has no ratings..( doesnt have to be viewed by the public..could be just members of WC)

Just a thought.......

I am all for the idea of making new skinners welcome and invited. Probably the biggest thing that keeps me visiting WC everyday is the community.

But this community exists and thrives because of the tools and rules of the site: forums, comments on submissions, ratings, access levels, and so on.

So I wonder, what changes or additions, specifically, could be made. And this thread is filled (for the most part) with suggestions.

In the end though, it seems the goals are to 1) increase constructive feedback from veteran skinners, and 2) create the least threatening circumstances possible for beginners to share.

Perhaps goal 2 can be achieved by censoring "unqualified" commenters (as has been suggested in a number of forms) and having no rating stars, but to achieve goal number 1 would be more difficult.

I doubt veteran skinners feel intimidated from commenting using the existing system--how will such individuals be encouraged to participate more? And I worry that setting aside a special place for people to dump rough, unfinished, and to be honest probably soon-to-be-abandoned skins is unlikely to attract many apprentices, much less journeypersons for constructive input.

Requests for criticism on the forums are usually well recieved. Perhaps a special forum where people could link to works-in-progress stored as personal-site-only skins is a possibility.

Trol?????? HHHMMMMMMM. Thanks for the support for us new skinners, Fairyy, But it seems some of us newbies will never have a chance to get a start. I have submited a few ObjectDock backgrounds and have done all of the work myself. I knew that I was competing against some of the best, But I did it anyway. I may never be as good as the "skinning Gods" here, But I do try. I thought I found a start and being called a "Troll", Doesn't really make me want to be a better skinner or even a skinner at all. I submit here so I can get the critiques and learn from my mistakes. I do realize I could submit at other sites, But, the best are here. Well, Thanks anyway. Keep up the great work folks!!!!!! (Sorry For Ranting)

and being called a "Troll"

Hey, Bro, this was in no way a reference to you, but to the buttmunch making idle threats and such. I love your work.

I would never refer to a noobie or someone making an honest effort as a Troll. (With the exception of Bichur. I HATE Bichur. I DESPISE him. Heck, he probably likes cats!)

I think a WIP gallery would be great. I would also like to see a category for NEW or FIRST time skinners in future contests..or a Promising New Talent category.

Here's my two cents (canadian).

I admit it...I am one of those "women" newbie skinners. I had a bug in my bonnet - I wanted to make my own skin. But just following along with the help manual wasn't enough. I didn't (and still don't) want to make just an ok skin. I want to make a great skin!

So...I posted sceenies of what I was trying to do, and i was lucky enough to have some of the people here agree to test my stuff before releasing it...and, believe me, alot never was and never will be released. (Thank you, you know who you are!)

I really appreciated all the positive input I recieved, but also was well aware that they were a little reluctant to point out shortcomings, perhaps from not wanting to give offence, or perhaps because they didn't have the knowledge of how to fix it to share.

So, I screwed up my courage and asked for help from one of the skinners whose work I admired and who gave me some constructive criticism on one of my early attemps at skinning - Night Train. Key word here is constructive.

He steered me to the Skinartistry workshop, where he was going to be giving lessons on line. Health kept him from this, but he continued to gave me "no holds" barred critiques of my work. And encouraged me to stick with the workshop.

The Skinartistry Workshop provided a place where I could post my work in progress stuff....I recieved honest critiques and most importantly got help and advice on stuff i just wasn't good at...encouraged to keep at it even when my attempts were failures and then when i finally made a descent skin... I was encouraged to go one better. I truly became an "apprentice" in the truest sense of the word.

My fears of not being allowed to join this "boys" club were totally unfounded....not only did I get great encouragement and support from the "Big Boys" I gained(am hopefull will continue to gain) skills along with friends.

I will finish this by saying a workshop is a splendid idea...and if one isn't formed here, try the one at Skinartistry. Or do what I did...ask someone you admire for help...you'd be suprized at how readily they will share any knowledge they have with you. And don't pay too much attention to comments that say "you suck" without saying " and here's why and here's what you can do to change it"

I agree with everything you just said Boopish!

I really hope that one does show up here. I have a wall in the workshop at Skinartistry now and have gotten great information from everyone. Someone else can spot things that you may have just not noticed. If there was a place like the workshop here I may have had some clue as to why the wall I submitted here was rejected. No comments at all, just a rejection. Thats ok, It also can be a learning experience.Bt that just made me all the more determined to do something better. (Boopish, I think I'll submit that wall here, can't hurt)

An Po.....(I can't resist....)

'po...just bring chocolate.....

And please don't take offence at the "boys club" comment...it just alludes to the fact that there are more males in this art form than females...at the moment. I just couldn't find a more pc way of putting it!

Nice post betty...I can't believe someone dredged this up..I wrote this forum almost a year ago. But, its still has some great ideas along the way.

As for testing out your first blind attempts..it was always fun to see what came in the email that day. Some of them were filled with errors. But, right from day one you had the ability to make astounding color combinations and something " different "

You certainly have come a long way eh ?

We at Skinnalicious are doing a Windowblind turorial via live chat and we are now opening the doors for a live session on how to do a blind for those that are interested. There is a poll up at Skinnalicious asking whether you would be interested in participating in a live chat tutorial on how to do a blind. After the poll, we will be setting up a forum where you can sign up for it if interested. We will meet approximately one to two hours per session, and at a set time.

We are also offering a work in progress live chat which will be done at a set time daily for those that are interested.

Take care everyone and hope we will see a lot of you interested and wanting to participate.

Thats pretty cool. if im not mistaken I think Night Train used to hold WB class's at another site, I always meant to try to get in on that but never was ready to when the class's started..

Just an Idea, perhaps someone could log each class and post the log as a sort of "Tutorial" on the sites boards?

Some of us dont do live chats well..LoL, or cant seem to find the time to devote to them...
