A New Catagory For Skinning?

~Hi

I'll just be brief and not really intending to point fingers at anyone.

But after viewing a few snitty comments on some WB skins ( and I'll remind everyone that blinds are shared and if you don't like it, don't download it, simple )

The real Topic here is what about starting a catagory for " New Skinners "

Several of the " women " of WC have their own little test group. Others don't have that pleasure of being able to test their work before uploading it.

Wouldnt it be nice to be able to upload a skin just to see if your doing anything RIGHT rather than being told everything thats wrong..or worse yet, being laughed at by people that forget they once had to start somewhere .

Im happy with just tweaking others blinds. Way too much involved in skinning an entire blind.

But..a catagory that has no ratings..( doesnt have to be viewed by the public..could be just members of WC)

Just a thought.......

Im'm not a subscriber (yet) but this makes a lot of sense to me. As you say much of the critisisms are not constructive but destructive. Hope stardock works on this.

And another good reason to be a subscriber

Im glad a few think its a good idea. I know I've mentioned this on other threads but felt maybe it should be on a thread by itself. Maybe it would be taken more seriously.

In regards to the trial system the ladies were doing..the woman making the blinds..well her first few were ..rather..ummm..lets just say if we had told her everything that was wrong, she may have never produced all the beautiful blinds she started making at the end. It was kinda fun watching her progress from crooked margins to blinds that are unique and i'm proud to have them in my skin library alongside the professionals.

~Does anyone have a better idea/approach to this ?

Fairyy you have a great idea. There should be a place where new people can upload their works and not be judged, but instead encouraged and helped. There is a lot of work in making a windowblind and if more people would help it would benefit your whole community. After all new people dont got to go through some of the crap that I know some people went through. They shoudl be encouraged, helped and applauded for their efforts.

How would you know what work goes into making a windowblind, Mr EasyRider2 (aka Butch123)? All you can do is push a button in Skin Studio and make crappy ports. Go away!

It's a great idea, just as it was when MAdIce suggested something very similar over a year ago........... but his idea wouldn't have been restricted to new skinners, but would have been a 'works in progress' section.

Sounds like a good idea. Kind of like a workshop area, and perhaps the right to comment would come with the act of actually uploading a blind. That way, people can still look "over the shoulders" of those doing the work, and people IN the workshop can dialog about it. I myself have yet to embark on a WB project, but I am interested, and it would be encouraging to see "works in progress".

Boss019 You know boss who i am is irrelevant..if I am Butch123 or if i am easyrider..thats irrelevant.. first of all you are off topic here, and dont you know that jealousy doesnt become a man of your age? Remember the old saying..them that can do...them that cant, shoot their mouth off ! Oh yeah I saw all your comments you made to Butch on Deviant Art and not very pleasant ones either, but I've yet to see one that Butch has made to you. If so, could you please supply a link if he has? Which you cant cause he hasnt..he has more class than that ! Now to get back on topic..i hope for all new people here this thing goes through and they can find a place they can get helped and encouraged.

I don't think having a spot for "new skinners" is a good idea. But tweaking it a bit, as Koasati mentioned, is a great idea, and have a 'Works in Progress" section. That would be swell. That could also avoid people who knowingly post 'beta' WB skins to the library.

i agree with Koasati, A "Works in Progress" area would be beneficial to new skinners.. They could upload what they have created and get tips, pointers and/or help with certain aspects of their work without (hopefully) taking alot of harsh criticism that seems to be the highlight of so many "non-skinners" to dish out...

Good Idea Fairyy, Kaosati...You have my vote!

Yes, similar to Skinartistry's Workshop would be a nice treat. Providing it is policed for rude, non contructive comments.

More importantly....in the current sections...if there are particularly obnoxious comments posted just let an admin know...so they [and their poster perhaps] can be dealt with.

Rather than have an area where overly-sensitive people can 'hide'...it's probably more beneficial to manage the trolls so hiding isn't necessary...

Mr EasyRider2 let's not drag up the obnoxious past.  If you have an issue with someone via comments on Deviantart.com .... leave them there.  That will be just fine and dandy, thankyou.

If everyone one would lets say form a group here for what I would say is a work-shop. Then maybe we can get some approval for an irc channel for communications and a section to post said working WB's to be seen by those who would help out with the artist and meet with them to help improve the art work. I believe this a very good idea - esp. for those artist who would like to learn more about skinning and get some really good tips to getting their works more ready for a good posting to the wb's section for a finished product.
All those that would like to take part in this please contact Frog Boy to let him know you are for or against such a thing happening here at WC.
Thanks all and I hope it happens!

Brad gets a gazillion emails a day as it is......... do not send him more to wade through.

#Wincustomize is already in place for skinning/social discussion.... and #stardock is for program 'issues' in particular.

So, IRC is catered for...

~Yes, your right that it needs a bit more than just beginners. They're probably arent enough "Newbies" to dedicate a section to just for this. Thats why I asked for others to add to the idea.

~Actually Jafo, the rude comments I've seen..the person(s) that made the blinds in several cases..they never replied to the rude comments at all. The blinds I'm referring to usually are rated with only 1 star, so I wonder how many actually ever see these blinds. I look at everything. Unfortunately there are a few people that think its ok or funny to say " Nothing special " or " who uses this crap "
or just post laughing smilies. I can guarantee you they didn't even download the blind at all. I noticed the more " professional " skinners had a bit more class in their comments or refrained from commenting at all. I'm not asking for "false praise " Just maybe a bit of encouragement..something positive about someone's work, even if its only the color or a button.

~So many of you are very tallented..and do share your knowledge and are more than willing to help out. I'm glad to see some imput on this idea and I hope more people will join in with their ideas and perhaps come up with something that will benefit all.

PS: boss..I clicked that link..kinda wish I hadn't even looked at it. Im glad WC has better moderation..I've seen your logons..I have tried to make a logon..I failed misrably .. but your right, there is much more satisfaction in making something yourself than pretending someone else's work is yours.

tremendioua idea !!

I've only been uploading work for about a month or so & people do tend to forget that people learn & imoprove in time, ( I'm still waiting for that to happen! maybe one day! ).
A lot of skinners on WC are from the USA & Canada so I felt like a omplete Alien outsider the fist time I raised my head, so thanks to all who gave their support & made me feel welcome.

Just one thing before I go, because it's really getting up my nose !

How does a skin become official ? ( if you have an official skin, does this make you better than everyone else? ........... mmmmm.

Are the licenses delivered by Dreamworks or perhaps the might Lucas himself !!

I was just wondering because I was thinking about releasing a plain black wall with a single white pixel in the misddle & calling it the official snow flake or maybe the official star, ( has a kinda ring to it), If it's official, it must be good...

Sorry about the rant, I just had to get it off my chest...

How does a skin become official ?

Certain works are commissioned by the company/corporation....are 'paid for'.  The Skins Factory is one such example....doing commissioned works for commercial release.

To be 'Official' there's a corporate/copyright agreement....it's not just a 'name'....

That is important. Encouragement. Constructive critisizm is useful to point out where more work is needed, but it's just as useful to know what's good, or better. Helps the morale.

Thanks for keeping me in check 'Admin Jafo'.

Looking back at my entry, I think there could be a hint of envy in there somewhere..... maybe

Appologies if I offended anybody, It wasnt aimed at anybody in particular ( ).

I think I'm just having a bad day....
