A New Catagory For Skinning?

A New Catagory For Skinning?

~Hi

I'll just be brief and not really intending to point fingers at anyone.

But after viewing a few snitty comments on some WB skins ( and I'll remind everyone that blinds are shared and if you don't like it, don't download it, simple )

The real Topic here is what about starting a catagory for " New Skinners "

Several of the " women " of WC have their own little test group. Others don't have that pleasure of being able to test their work before uploading it.

Wouldnt it be nice to be able to upload a skin just to see if your doing anything RIGHT rather than being told everything thats wrong..or worse yet, being laughed at by people that forget they once had to start somewhere .

Im happy with just tweaking others blinds. Way too much involved in skinning an entire blind.

But..a catagory that has no ratings..( doesnt have to be viewed by the public..could be just members of WC)

Just a thought.......

Jaydd...you have a right to add your comments with or without smilies. Im not sure I understood completely but thats ok too. You mentioned that most are from USA and Canada. Actually people here are from all over the world. I think sometimes that maybe part of the problem...sometimes things are phrased in a way that its mistaken and its usually a language barrier. Sometimes what is just a normal form of "wit" can look like a sarcastic comment. I'm no angel..I've been known to be snitty at times. But, I do try not insults someones work.
Constructive critisizm is useful to point out where more work is needed,

~Much better to point out what a person can do to improve something....especially a first skin...you want them to keep with it. Not be discouraged and give up on the whole idea. My problem is tons of ideas......but..no clue to bringing it to life most days..thats what friends are for...

hi,
I'm not a skinner. I'm a programmer.. my realm is just the harmony of just lines and lines of code, but I do frequent WC though to check out a lot of the artistry and insight being done to help improve UI development (good job to all). A section devoted for newbies, gathering critique and such, in my opinion is very useful. As long it's used for its intended purposes .. otherwise its just another area for people to slam others (worst case).
That's my take .. but I could be wrong
carry on .. have a nice day =D

Yes...that's a distinct possibility.....a 'let's go over to the cage and stir up the newbies for a laugh' sort of thing.

If/when some such feature/section is added it'd need close supervision to ensure people were NOT actively discouraged rather than encouraged...

Thats a good point. Not sure how to avoid this situation unless the section was watched by volunteers or only certain people had access to be able to comment.
Im not sure thats a possibility..hopefully it can be worked out.

Why not make commenting contingent on having submitted a skin to the library?

only certain people had access to be able to comment.

Perhaps only members with a rating of (x) or higher would bel allowed to comment. That way only those who know what they are doing would be able to critique anothers work.
Don't know if this can be done. Just a thought.

I need to be more careful. Been doing too much of this lately. One of these days I'm going to hurt myself

Mr EasyRider2 let's not drag up the obnoxious past. If you have an issue with someone via comments on Deviantart.com .... leave them there. That will be just fine and dandy, thankyou.

Jafo...no my problem is with you. and I dont mind settling it on Deviant Art...btw nice site you have..do you wanna keep it?

Sounds curiously 'threatening'.

Hardly wise....

I had a thought as well..it's at least my 3rd this year!..LoL

What if Skinners with only journeyman status were allowed to comment upon the skins posted in the "New Talent" section?
I am assuming that the Journeymen would not bash/flame/ridicule the works in progress but instead offer very good advice\tips\tricks that perhaps alot of us could learn from...
From what I have witnessed it is usually a person that has no clue about the whole "Skinning" process that is the worst offender...

I dont know if thats possible, but it would be the safest I think, if the main objective is to provide an area for new skinners gain useful criticism rather than useless and offensive abuse..

EasyRider - LMAO... There is an old saying and I think it's useful advice.. "Dont allow your Gorilla Mouth to get your Hummingbird Butt into something you'll be sorry about later" Hmmmm... that must be my 4th thought this year!!..LoL

I'm still thinking of LS.net [I think it was]...where each 'skinner' could decide if he wished to receive comments from everyone...or just fellow skinners.....the argument being that the latter would [generally] have a better understanding of what he was looking at than, say, the casual user.

If there was a 'way' to set that up...it'd be perfect for such a section....though then there might be a need to differentiate between skin types....eg a Beatnik skin is a wee bit simpler than a Windowblind skin...

Fairyy you have a great idea. There should be a place where new people can upload their works and not be judged, but instead encouraged and helped. There is a lot of work in making a windowblind and if more people would help it would benefit your whole community. After all new people dont got to go through some of the crap that I know some people went through. They shoudl be encouraged, helped and applauded for their efforts.

(a direct quote from Butch123)

~You know whats ironic about this ? You post this comment and your one of the offenders. Do you even know what you write or who you make comments to ?
I had avoided this only because I wanted this thread to stay on topic. But I see your only here to be a Troll as usual.
Your comment on one of the skins with 1 star was this ......

Good concepts just wish it could be for more than just window blinds.

Mr Grimner..I didnt mean to make it sound like it was only for WB's. All skinning areas would be awesome. I only know how to make a rainlender....nothing fancy, no toggle buttons. Sometimes the more knowledgable skinners write the tutorials ..i'm not even familiar with some of the terms used. So if the section was watched over by only the more advanced skinners, they need to keep that in mind..not all of us are that computer savvy ..hope I spelt that right

If you don't understand the terms used...... ask someone for clarification.

EasyRider 2 is Butch123, who conviently pulled the link I posted above. Others here have seen it and know the content and the lack of "Class", hell, lack of anything resembling a "classy" human being. He is a total con.

Skinartistry has had a system set up for well over a year now where people can upload WIP's. The idea is to make it easier for newbies to learn and assist the elders with testing. It has worked flawlessly. People can choose between public or private viewing.

That's true Night Train, and it's a great thing you guys are doing there. I just wish your site wasn't so slow for dialup users. That's the main reason I don't visit the site much. 2+ minutes to load a page........ and to tell the truth, the last time I was there (last week), I couldn't find a link to the WIP section. I was going to mention it in this thread, but I had to give up, too slow, and too hard to read small white text on black.

Wizop Koasati , if I asked every question I had..I'd drive you crazy. Thats why I try to figure it out myself or ask a " friend" but if you insist

Night Train ..your one of the skinners that goes out of their way to help others. I find most here are very willing to send directions in email. Skin Artistry's "Works In Progress " section...Is it used more for the more seasoned skinners to show their WIP or is it more " beginners ? "

Boss: I read everything at the link you provided and even saw you make the comment about " go ahead and pull all the comments like you always do " and he replied " no way "
We all know Mr.Easyrider is butch123...and I saw the " real " him. Its not very becomming .

manage the trolls
Have they become so unmanageable?!

There is an old saying
I heard it as "Alligator Mouth/Humminbird a__"

[...meanwhile, back at the ranch...] > fairyy, thanks for the thread. I'm just starting to sniff around the mechanics of skinning after a few years (!) around here, feasting and browsing.
If and when I upload, I'd certainly, unquestionably enjoy and welcome critique! If my hide is so tender as to be offended, please slap me into next week, as it would be a welcome reality-check.Friend of mine said she feels like she's "running shoulder-to-shoulder with the buffalo", describing a group she hangs with...that's a great part of this community for me.

A critique "section"? You bet. First must prepare to meet with sensei. So...
[goes to draw a circle...]

As a new skinner I think the Idea is great!!! I would love to be able to see that. But why not offer it to the public and let that be the only rating. If a new skin reaches a certain level, then it could be promoted. I would love to know if I'm doing anything wrong with my skins. I can also add that I love what I do, So learning something new could be offered to the new ones who stay around to become skinning gods as well.
Thanks for listening............
