The Next Skinning contest..

The Next Skinning contest..

What should it be? Tell us..

We have some ideas on what the next skinning contest should be.  We want to make it only cover ONE program rather than multiple (gets too hard to manage).

Here are some thoughts:

1) WindowBlinds skinning contest.

2) DesktopX related contest - Best Themes, Best Widgets, Best Animated objects

3) Media Player contest

4) Icon contest

5) Wallpaper contest

6) Screenshot contest

7) Best Suite contest (Visual Style + Wallpaper + Icon Package + Desktop widgets/gadgets put together into a single theme)

8) Other.

~After reading all the comments..even though a screen shot contest would give a lot of others that don't skin a chance to participate..
I dont think this would work. The idea would be for the
" untallented " to participate. But if the skinners make their own blind and walls , objects , etc . for a screen shot, then it defeats the purpose.

~My screen shots revolve about 99% of the time around a wallpaper.

~Then the search is on for a blind..icons..etc...

Surely a suite, just to raise the contest to a good level all things should be skinned.

Plus at each specific category there are masters of the craft, people who know well how to do one thing. But are there people who can do well the whole thing? That is a challenge.

Id go for DesktopX,,think windowblinds has reached its potential as we only seem to get variants of what we already have where as DX is only limited by ones imagination.

I have nothing against Windowblinds, I use it all the time. BUt the fact is that there has been great Windowblinds contests before and I think that people has come up with fantastic skins before. But I think that Desktop X still has an amazing unleashed potential and I'd love to see good prizes baiting the great coders to come up with new imaginative widgets. Everybody pretty much knows that Desktop X is so much more powerfull than Dashboard or Konfabulator, but yet these apps have way more diversity in their widgets than Desktop X does. I think that a contest could be a great opportunity to break away from the mould.

a FULL suite.

Maybe a poll would be a great idea

I'd vote for a DX widget contest.

I would love to see a DX contest. As previously stated, the potential is out there. I haven't been using DX lately because there are few good themes. Also (I'm gonna get in trouble for this one), how about a NextStart contest?

As a skinner, I'm obviously partial to WindowBlinds, but we always have WindowBlinds contests. DesktopX 3 is really cool, and lots of people are making things for it these days. I think a contest might raise the bar a little.

Windowblinds and some creative DX objects or themes... Please

I first said a DesktopX contest would be great. However, after thinking about it and reading some posts, I have to agree a screenshots contest sounds pretty good.

I think a DX contest could bring forth some creative themes and pretty widgets. This could easily be done by collaberation between coders and skinners.

I vote for a full fledged suite competition. That will actually require teamwork and the results will simply be outstanding. And by the way ... no mock ups of popularly copied OSes should be allowed. Lets see if we can push the limits of creativity to newer heights.

My vote is for either a windowblinds skin or a best suite!

WB, IP, DX Theme and Widgets, ODock - Application Icons (as many as possible) etc.

Although I'd like to see a suite contest (most original, most complete, best new experience, etc.); I think it would make some good marketing sense to have a DX3 contest. I love trying out new themes and really appreciate all the hard work that goes into a complete suite; but a DX3 contest might encourage more development into the themes, widgets and objects. Also, by limiting it to just DX3, you still have some variety - best overall theme, best widget, most useable theme, most original (or practical) widget or object... the list can go on as long as your imagination will let it. It might also be an opportunity to start a trend of offering skinning contests say three months after a major update to focus attention on the kick-butt technologies/functionality Stardock has incorporated in their apps.

Just my thoughts.

I personally favour "Suites Skinning" Compition but there will be too much work out. Why not to extend GUI Oplymics' theory by adding Wallpapers Category to it ... ?

Think about what the question is. We are being asked what type of contest we would like to see. A windowblind contest will bring out all the best skinners. But like the other contests..many of the blinds will be just for " decor " and not really usable. Think about the basic design of a blind. Most of us have the ability to change the color and tweak to our own taste. There's only just so many shapes and colors a blind can be...plus all the previous contests have been blinds.

I'd like to see some great walls or widgets. If they choose to make it blinds, then I hope its a suite. That could be interesting.

Thinking about things a bit more I would like to change my vote. There are already so many amazing WB skins that I can't even find the time to use them all.

Go for DesktopX based contest. I would love to finally have the masses see just how amazing DesktopX can be (and to be selfish, I would love some more compelling reasons to use it regularly).

So, yeah, those pushing for DesktopX contests have won me over.
