The Next Skinning contest..

The Next Skinning contest..

What should it be? Tell us..

We have some ideas on what the next skinning contest should be.  We want to make it only cover ONE program rather than multiple (gets too hard to manage).

Here are some thoughts:

1) WindowBlinds skinning contest.

2) DesktopX related contest - Best Themes, Best Widgets, Best Animated objects

3) Media Player contest

4) Icon contest

5) Wallpaper contest

6) Screenshot contest

7) Best Suite contest (Visual Style + Wallpaper + Icon Package + Desktop widgets/gadgets put together into a single theme)

8) Other.

the thing is, there really haven't been any contests for desktopX... There are tons of windowblinds and icon contests and I think its time for somthing diffrent. So i think we should do desktopX... Especially after the release of V3

I think there should be a widget and a theme category for the contest. I also think it would be nice if there were diffrent categories in the contest for age groups. Perhaps divided by 20 years or somthing. Wouldn't it be cool to find out the top skinners from diffrent era's?

Not all of us use DX and therefore wouldn't know how to skin it

This is what I wanted to say.

It's a quote so it's already been said although the meaning is somewhat confusing.

I think DesktopX, because it badly needs some widgets that people have spent some time polishing.

If there is a DesktopX competition, I highly recommend people spend the time on a few quality useful widgets/gadgets rather than trying to flood the competition with gunk. Make it slick, make it smooth, make it something people will want to use all the time. And be original - it is possible!

I still say windowblinds. I wouldn't participate in any of these for one reason: too many greats out there already. lol.. Me going against the best of the best in the WindowBlinds or DesktopX world would be as foolish as me going head-to-head with the Skins Factory in a WMP10 contest.

Does everyone that uses windowblinds know how to create a theme?

Windowblinds has already had too many contests... desktopx has NEVER HAD ANY...

i mean come on... we jus thad the GUI olypmics.. that was almost entirely windowblinds oriented

DesktopX needs a contest!!!

I would like to bring up a good point as well:

Why bother having a contest at all when we all know by looking at past contest winners that the masters of the craft always win?

I'm sure if you have a DX contest that Tiggz or Adni will win.

I'm sure if you hold a Windowblinds contest then TSF, Adni, or any of the other top authors or masters of the trade will win.

Not much left for the newbies.

kona0197 - All the people you mention were newbies once.

I know Master Gef - my point was that no matter what contest we hold most likey the top authors will win.
So? They're the top authors for a reason.
How about making it where everyone gets a shot at the contest. Meaning, make it so people can enter a skin in any major category(listed in the opening post), to enter what they feel is their best work to date. One entry per person per category for a limit. No one gets left out.

My $.02

It wouldn't matter Bones - If I enetered I would not win as my skills can not compare to Adni18's. That's my whole point. The Masters and Top Authors always win.

Wasn't it a complete newb (I think it was grayhaze who was an absolute unknown at the time) who won in most of the WB categories during the 2001 (or 2002?) GUI-olympics?

Not wanting a particual contest just because you think you might not win seems to be a rather negative apporach to any kind of contest. Do you always give up that easily? (...nudge, nudge )

Having said that, I actually would love to see a DX contest (maybe different categories: Desktop and Widgets). I think it would give DX the publicity it needs (and deserves) and it would generate much needed new high-quality content for it.

No I don't give up that easily. I haven't entered any contest in the past. I don't think I will now. I was just trying to make a point.

The point I heard was..you don't think any of your other skinner friends are talented enough to win any contests.

What do you propose, certain people aren't allowed to enter?

Oh and BTW, Windowblinds.

No Night Train - by all means I hope all my friends enter the contest.

Good luck to all and nevermind my comments.

When it was first proposed, the idea was to 'reward' the top authors for their individual achievements and support to WC. This idea was later scraped because it wasn’t fair to those that were not on the top lists.
Brad opted to organize a series of contests to give everyone an equal chance. Some how the project didn’t work as planed. After the first contest was over it didn’t continue to the next one. I believe the order was WB then IconPack then DX Theme, etc, etc.
Regardless of how things turned out, the contest was not design to favor any group in particular. A newbie can be just as good as an 'elder'. The contest is decided by download counts not by author's names and downloads are based on how good the skin/theme looks and works. Functionality and presentation are key factors on any contest.
I have not entered in any previous contest but I would do my best to enter on the next one. I just hope is on an application I can skin
So, Treetog, TSF, Adni, Mike, Essorant, Danillo, Tiggz and everyone on the top list, hold on to your papers. The Apocalypse train is pulling all the stops.

Nicely put but i find it that it is through these contests that new truly talented people come to surface, even if they are those few...For instance take the results of the last GUI Olympics, some new talents sprung out of it because of it, talents which now are in top list authors. See a master is not born,it's made and to be a master you gotta be forged harshly, through contests exactly like the one suggested. So it's giving new and elder's both equal chances.

Also you can view it from another point of view. How would you feel if two separate contests where held? One for newbies and one for masters? You find it more fair? I know i don't. I may not stand any chances against masters, but i'm sure i'm willing to give it a shot,to take the challenge to compete as an equal, not as a minor.

Other than these few words i have nothing more to say. Thnx for listening.

Mike Russo, what is your malfunction. Was that remark necessary? I dont think so.

Well one thing we could do for mini-contests would be to have the winners based on the user-given ratings.  Since only subscribers and high access users can give ratings, it would be reasonably fair then.
