hydrogen-powered car VS diesel

Someone tell me why million of government money is going into hydrogen-powered car when a diesel cars is very effiecent with fuel and pollution? I know hydrogen-powered car is better, but here and now couldn't we start to change over to diesel?

the idea is this... Hydrogen cars have no pullution... the only exhaust is steam... h2o that's it... ... since pollution laws didn't happen the way people wanted them the governemnt needs a new idea... the idea isn't to cut back on pollution like a diesel vehicle does, it's to completely eliminate it

Splitting up water into hydrogen and oxygen is massively ineffective right now though. But like IPlural said, diesel = fossil fuel = limited supply.

Hydrogen powered cars is a bad idea with current technoligies.

Splitting a single hydrogen atom gives off a lot of energy, and runs the risk of exploding.

Hydrogen powered cars will NOT be an option unless there is a 100% success rate during testing. If there are any problems, there will be a MAJOR recall in hydrogen powered cars, and those that aren't recalled won't be driven, because people will be worried that their car might have the same problem.

In a few years, there won't be much choice, because petrol will be too expensive for everyone to afford. (In my city, petrol has risen to over a AUS $1 per litre.)

For all those people that don't live in Brisbane (ie. everyone that's not called Ryan8024), it used to be around 30 cents 4-5 years ago, and the current "normal" price was in the high 70's to mid 80's until there was the threat of war.

PS. I heard that a fuel company bought out the idea of using hydrogen powered cars, because it could make them go bankrupt overnight.

First off let me tell everyone that I am a bicycle freak. My expensive Kona tells the story. If everyone rode bikes the world would be a better place but since people love polluting the enviroment by driving, my voice is useless.

I have been a fan of anything that DOES not use fossil fuels for transportation and energy needs for years. My bicycle does not pollute and runs on water (when I drink it) I am not as into the movement against fossil fuels as greenpeace and clubs like them for one simple reason:

I like nuclear power.

Somewhere down the road everyone of us is going to have to face the fact that we have screwed up the world by burning fossil fuels and by that time it will be to late.

Please also understand I have a car, I drive it maybe once a week because here in oregon gas is about $1.90 a gallon for regular unleaded so I am forced to park my beast and ride my bike.

I do not like the hydogen powered cars but the new hybrids and other alternative fuel cars look promising. ANYTHING is better than fossil fuels. And by the way, a gasoline motor is more efficent and pollutes more than a diesel.

There will never be any other fuel driven car other than fossil fuel. The money/oil mongers will not allow that and they control every govt in the world.

There will be prototypes built just to have the facade that they want a change for the better but nothing will ever come from them.

Example, there was invented some years ago. a washing machine that cleans clothes without detergent. The detergent industry squashed that invention quickly. Let's pollute more they say and make money.

Example, there is a cry to stop global warming so instead of saying, let's stop cutting down the rain-forest, they say, let's cut down more and build big homes with the materials for the oil giants and their cohorts.

Electricity is the way to go, and there has been huge developments in that area.

BTW, just a thought: if every car's exhaust released H2O vapor, wouldn't the volume of it be sufficient in major cities such as NY or LA that they would be always covered in clouds and rain 365/year?

Where do you think that the futures drinking water is going to come from? Certainly not rivers or lakes because they will be too poluted.

When a person gets thirsty all they will have to do is go outside and run around with their mouth open.

I think that the current fuel cell technology is where we should be headed, but with diesel instead of gas as the fuel supply. For example, a diesel engine in a Jetta gets about 49 mpg (I had one, so I can verify it is true) whereas the same car with a gas engine (at very best) will get 30 mpg.

So if you were using diesel while cruising (which is where it is fuel efficient) and the fuel cell around town, then you would have a lot less use of oil products (plus, diesel is a lot less refined) and would have a lot less pollution.

Current diesel engines have to pass the same pollution controls as gas engines. The problem with making more pollution free vehicles? The mileage gets worse, so you end up using more fuel (not good). (My husbands works at a very large diesel engineering company, so I know a lot about the current EPA standards for diesels...)

kona0197, my house is 55 miles from work, how do I bicycle to it? The closest town is 6 miles from my house, how do I get there on my bike and buy groceries? Not everyone lives in the same situations.

yeah but if you (Karmagirl) had to pay over $2 dollars a gallon (When 5 months ago it cost only $1.20) and knew it now takse over $30 to fill the tank and since she's a old car she goes through it fast as well. The main reasin I ride my bike is because I am a bicycle mechanic. I still believe nuclear power is the way to go. And diesel pullutes alot more than gas. My uncle has a CDL. His rig bleches black smoke. gas engines never do. Who cares we are all screwing up the world.

Why Hydrogen powered vehicles are bad for the environment:

It takes more energy to extract and compress Hydrogen into a form that vehicles can use than it does to use that energy directly without the intermediate step, i.e. Hydrogen.

Where will the energy to extract and compress the Hydrogen come from? Nuclear plants? Coal fired plans? Gas turbines? It won't come from solar or wind. Hydroelectric power won't increase much either, we've already placed dams on most of the rivers that would generate signifigant energy.

BTW, it takes more energy to crack water to get hydrogen than you get from the hydrogen powered fuel cells. Also, the current most cost effective way to get hydrogen is to crack it out of fossil fuels.... oops, isn't that what we're trying to get away from?

hmmmm... I am going to hav to do more research on this subject. I just find it funny that diesel seems to work better for fuel economy. but I also read that diesel fuel cost more... but that only seems to be because of the supply/demand rule.

I like SUV's but I don't like the mileage AT ALL. Then I saw the perfect one... the volvo XC 90. (15/20).

Still horrible but usually when I drive I coast allot and the last time driving a suv, I got--- drum roll... 18/24!! (its all in the wrist... urrm foot)

But that is still not good enough. what I really don't get is how come there can't be more hybrid cars. ESPECAILLY in suv's since there is so much space in the car for it? Why can't there be a generator on the car that uses the cars motion to generate power?

I guess there is just no simple answer.

Oh, they can do that, but it would slow you down. Then you would have to use extra energy to maintain speed, etc.

Actually kona, they've solved many of the problems that plagued older diesels. More research is needed. Right now the issue is that because America has such a large existing base of gas stations, our future vehicles will run on gas in some way, augmented by addatives or electricity. Europe is in a similar situation with diesel.

I have heard that we in the US pollute the most. But the diesels we have here do pollute more than gas.
