One of the first jobs I had was at a state institution for "the mentally retarded" (they would never get away with that name these days). On some days one of my biggest challenges was to keep the guy I was "responsible for" from digging the sealing putty from around the windows or the soft asphalt from the side of the road and modeling it into animal shapes (no matter he was superb). On other guys it was keeping the guy who was fixated on the piano away from it (no matter that he could play by ear classical pieces heard only once). I felt more and more ashamed at my job and quit after a time.

Later on, laws changed. The institutions opened up and let their people go. I moved to Hawaii and one day I pick up the newspaper and read of a young 'idiot savant' who could mold the most detailed, accurate, and beautiful likenesses out of any medium. This young man was well on the way to being a millionaire.

Our history is full of great thinkers who think so far out of the boxes that they fail miserably at IQ tests. Some have been classified as retarded and locked away.

I found this quote today, it seems apt.... Capture accidents. The wrong answer is the right answer in search of a different question. Collect wrong answers as a part of the process. Ask different questions. Bruce Mou

I found it at this site: http://www.consequences-of-thought.com/index2.html

I guess my point is that we exclude too much from our lives by defining anything too strictly or by making it too important.

...not to mention the damage we do along the way......

GM...anyone fixated on the 'rating' of their IQ is as deficient as the one who is fixated on penis size. Both are truly 'sad'...

I presume to think / feel that at any given time a person with a low IQ score that happens to live in the Amazon Basin get's my vote as leader of the touring party everytime!

It is all relevant to the situation at hand and the people involved.

For example, when the bombing started in Afghanistan people in the CNN chats would speak about the uneducated Afghanis people and other Muslims in the region. When in fact a uneducated 10 yearold with a pocket full of bullets, rifle, goat skin and boots has a better chance of living there at any given time than the most highly educated Ivey Leguage Grad Student.

it's all relevant

Fuzzy, that thing about feeling if not actually knowing inside that you were/are ment to do something grander in life. Something for yourself or humanity, empathy can do that to a person... Besides, you do well with it, after all you being who you are is enough

It is relevant when people start categorizing human beings using their IQ, just like others use skin color, religion, age, language, sex (or lack of).

I forget the name of the group in question, but I've read of a group of intellectual fanatics who were advocating that the human species needed a good genetic pool cleansing. Their solution was that we should castrate any individual that has an IQ below average. The purpose of this is not too far from what the guy with the funny mustache had in mond back during WW2.

That's why I get a bit itchy when people start talking about IQ as if superior people had superior IQs. Some people have a high IQ, some people are tall, some people have brown hair. Neither of those are better human beings than the others.

IQ test is just another test to try to clasify ppl into diff catagories for statistical purposes... hehe
I think they are funny cuz it takes more than a high IQ to make it in this world and be successful or happy for that matter and everyone has their own individual strengths & weakness that an IQ test won't show.

/me just had a teensy epiphany...

How 'bout a 'preview post' button? Might save a lot of "anal-retentive" self-correcting, re-posting after one sees one's own mistakes. What is it about seeing it after the fact that things glare out at you? I do that with e-mails too...I drive myself bonkers...

Oh fuss and bother.

Well, just a suggestion. Never mind me...back to my corner.

eugenics movement, if you trace it's history there is some pretty interesting things in it.

1, it evolved into Planned Parenthood as we know it today.

2, The UN at US prompting had a program in thrid world nations which provided male and female sterilization to keep local populations under control. national Security was one reason given for the use of US tax dollars paying up to 80% of the program on a global scale.

3, Bush 41 was key it the UN acceptance and use of said program. He also provided the US part of it's funding with Tax dollars.

4, Prescott Bush, George H W Bush's father and George Walker Bush's grandfather was a key played in the origional Eugenics movement. By the way it was seen as a brilliant idea in Britian at the same time and actually filtered over to the US from there and Germany.

The Grandfather who lost all his holdings in the bank he was president of in NYC which was a German "NAZI party owned" that funded much of the Brown Shirt movement and later NAZI parties build up leading to WWII. Germany was flat broke pretty much excluding foreign investments, and exports of machined goods used in industrial nations for production of various goods or manufacturing equipment.

Afterwards he was a key player in the creation of the CIA along with a few of his buddies who also had funds frozen and eventualy ceased by the government for trading with the NAZI durring WWII.

This same group of people were investigated for bringing in war criminals, former SS agents, to help put together the inner workings of the CIA. They also used some of OSS infrastructure in it's eventual creation.

Heck Shell Oil who's largest share holder was the Royal Family in Britian was providing crude to the NAZI up to a point.

5, It changed Skins ( names and promotional material ) many times over the years but was always the same Theme at it's root.

6, They did in fact try for many years to clean the Gene pool in the USA, even as late in time as the 50's and it is questionable if it is still in practice today in certain situations. Though it is not accepted standard precedure in Institutions and Hospitials today as it was in the past. There are still medical professionals who claim it is humain, changed skins, themes the same...

anyway, there is some history not taught in schools out there on the web. you can search, but verify, Library of Congress is a good place to start if interested.

ok, ok, enough silliy from me...
