Msgboard Chatroom Marathon

Honestly, I would go to IRC for this kind of stuff, but if any of you have been there recently, everyone seems to be...inactive. Sooooooooo, out of boredom, I'm turning a thread among this msgboard into a chat room, anyone care to join? =P.

It's Sunday night, and I'm bored out of my mind. There's much to do, but I'm too lazy to get around to do it. My boyfriend is busying trying to get Visual Studios to work so I can't talk to him on the phone....and we can't seem to talk over the phone anyways...it'll just be silence mostly.

New Semester started........so anyone alive out there to join Elffie in this chat marathon? =P

Let's try not to let this post hang for over 2 hours, hm? =P

Fuzzy Logic - As for me trying the braille test in a dark room with GM *BLUSH* what can I say?

/me doesnt recall suggesting *you* take the braile test!

/me and dracoform were planning on taking it myself, on BOTH of you!

Fuzzy Logic goes all shy and retiring...

Fuzzy Logic - Agreed. We should have a spank KarmaGirl session. Maybe a tickle too while we're at it

definetly!

Fuzzy Logic thinks anyone as brainy as KG needs a good fettling from time to time to release all that dynamic energy...

/me wonders if now would be a bad time to admit that i have a genius of the year award certificate at home?

FL-"You consider 82% not good enough??? Whoa, I'm glad I don't have to compete with you. Sounds to me like you're doing well."
Feline-"you mean to say that 100% and 82% as a pair of marks arent that good???"

Well, a little back story to this all might help. I did very well in high school. Moved on to the honors courses at University.....screwed up *big time* and got academically dismissed. Went to college and got an associates degree (2 year degree) then went and did all my Photography studies. (was always on the "Dean's list" during that time.) Never went back to University until now. Well, now I feel like I have to prove to myself that I can do well at a University level. So, if I end up with anything lower than 90% in a class, I will feel like I failed. I have become a bit of a "perfectionist" in my old age.

GM-"I was just wondering, for the digital photographers, if working in the darkroom isn't something you are going to miss?"

Yes, I do miss the Darkroom. However, I moved to digital so that I could have some of that back until my daughter gets older. Right now, with working 40+ hours a week (not to mention the hour commute each way), taking two classes, and having a hubby and (almost) 4 year old (she'll be 4 on Friday) I don't have any time for Darkroom. So, the best I can do is take pics on a digital camera and modify them (you can dodge and burn and stuff in Photoshop) on the computer. My computer is in my living room, so I can be in the midst of the rest of the family while working on my stuff. My digital camera also has full manual features, so i have as much control as i want actually taking the picture.

feline: what is a "fettle"

Remember I'm from Yorkshire...

From Pat Cagle: "I do, indeed, feel in fine fettle today. However, a young friend asked where the word fettle came from as she had never heard of it. It seems fettle is always used with fine and I realize now I have never heard it expressed in any other way. If you have the time I shall appreciate learning its origin."

These days, you're indeed likely only to hear fettle when it's shackled to fine to make a set phrase. It's a fossil, left over from a time when the word was better known. The repeated initial letter undoubtedly helped stick them together, which is why you only rarely (if ever) hear of something in good fettle or bad fettle or the like. Older works sometimes employ other modifiers: in John Barleycorn by Jack London, for example, there appears: "Those fifty-one days of fine sailing and intense sobriety had put me in splendid fettle".
The word was most typically used as a verb meaning to put things in order, tidy up, arrange, or prepare. Here's an example, from Anne Brontë's Agnes Grey of 1847, in the Yorkshire dialect speech of a servant: "But next day, afore I'd gotten fettled up - for indeed, Miss, I'd no heart to sweeping an' fettling, an' washing pots; so I sat me down i' th' muck - who should come in but Maister Weston!". In northern English it can still have the sense of making or repairing something. In Australia, a fettler is a railway maintenance worker, responsible for keeping the line in good shape. It's also used in some manufacturing trades - in metal casting and pottery it describes the process of knocking the rough edges off a piece. But all of these are variants of the basic sense. So the noun refers to condition, order or shape, and fine fettle means to be in good order or condition.

Its origins are a bit obscure. It seems to come from the Old English fetel for a belt, so the verb probably first had the meaning of girding oneself up, as for a heavy task. It's related to the German Fessel for a chain or band, but not to the confusingly similar fetter, which actually comes from the same root as foot.

Hmmph! I suspected that he was one of those people who actually listened in school. This must be reported to the Neanderthals.

Fuzzy Logic - I've never seen anyone sink so low for a fettle

fuzzy, your long and interesting answer doesnt seem to explain your comment!

when you remind me, i am familiar with "a fine fettle" as a phrase.

/me decides to go for a simple, and well proven next step

lets SPANK fuzzy!!!

Bangkokboy: Hmmph! I suspected that he was one of those people who actually listened in school. This must be reported to the Neanderthals.

That's a slur on my good name - I'll have you know I hardly ever went to school

p.s. If you are going to wander in here you'll have to prove your 'furryness'. However, Neanderthals are welcome because they are naturally furry

The only exception to this furryness rule is some females are allowed to go naked...

JavaBrain - Well, a little back story to this all might help.

*snip*

JavaBrain - Well, now I feel like I have to prove to myself that I can do well at a University level. So, if I end up with anything lower than 90% in a class, I will feel like I failed. I have become a bit of a "perfectionist" in my old age.

perhaps time for a bit of a reality check JavaBrain?

although i cannot match your tale of university, i didn't do as well as i should have first time around. i was to young, and massively under-prepared.

so since then i have started doing another degree.

after 5 years and 5 courses, along with working full time, i think i have some idea of where you are coming from

due to various acts of management, there are normally massive long term crises at work while i am doing one of these courses. one year i was working 60 hour weeks, and doing a weeks worth of course work and assignments in my spare time on Sundays

like you i have a perfectionist streak.

however, the real question isn't how close to 100% did you get, it is how close to the actually achievable top mark did you get?

i was doing computer courses, and work with computers for a living. theoretically it is actually possible to get 100% on a computer course, since there are no essay type questions.

i was (and am) one of the top students, partly due to the experience gained at work. and in 5 years worth of assignments nearly all of my marks were at 90% or above. however, i only ever got ONE mark of 100% in all that time!

now you are doing a "communication" course. realistically what is the expected top mark?

also how are you doing in comparison to the other students, many of whom probably have far less demands on their time?

getting back a far lower mark than expected IS demoralising, but if *everyone's* marks are 20% lower than normal, then it wasn't you, it was the assignment!

look around your home. you have a loving husband and a lovely child! those are real accomplishments!

also you have friends here. you are doing very well on several fronts!

there, now i have put things into perspective for you, *HUGS*

Feline, I see what you are saying about the classes. I just really have a high standard for myself, I guess. I really should have only taken one class, too. I am taking a Business Communications class and a Business Law class. Probably doing one at a time would have been enough! I just *really* want to prove to myself that I can do this. It is definitely harder this time around doing the school thing, though. Working full time and being a Mom is enough. Add a couple classes to that, and it really digs into my coffee and chocolate time!

Tomorrow is my baby's 4th Birthday. We are having her party on Saturday Now if I can just figure out how to get my house clean before the party
Reply #3195 Top
yey, a party!

as for cleaning the house, dracoform suggests bribing your husband to get lots of help. we are sure you can think of something to entice him with! *blush*

and of course there is always the point that you only need to clean some of the rooms, and bar access to the uncleaned area's

/me wouldnt recorment putting to much faith in fuzzy's rules

after all, several of the people here have never actually undergone the furryness test.

as for fuzzy, he make amusing noises when spanked, and that helps to make up for things!

feline: after all, several of the people here have never actually undergone the furryness test

Hmmm, we've never actually tested you. There's this natural assumption that because you're a puddy tat you are furry

/me suggests we coax feline into the forest for a few tests, tickles and spanks
