Weekly Poll: Wallpaper Moderation

Stirring the pot

https://www.wincustomize.com/webpoll.aspx

One of the most controversial galleries on WinCustomize is, without a doubt, our wallpaper section.  In the past 90% of all work submitted was rejected out-right.  Now, more is let through, but still the vast majority is placed on a user's personal page instead of the main gallery.  This has met with mixed reactions from wallpaper artists and users alike.  Some do not like the relaxed requirements, claiming that it has ruined the quality of the gallery.  Others contend that we're being too restrictive and driving away wallpaper artists to other sites such as DeviantArt, Interfacelift etc.

So I thought this week we'd put it to an actual vote.  Let everyone voice their opinion on how they would like wallpaper moderation to be handled.

At the moment, moderators look at a wallpaper submission, and decide whether it's personal-page-only, or main gallery material.  The general metric we use is if something would be rated a 5/10 or higher (or 2.5 stars), it's good enough for the main gallery, 4/10 and lower goes to the personal page.  We only reject broken submissions, submissions with bad preview images, or rips.

So, is our new policy to send some items to the personal page, and others to the main gallery a good one?  Is the 5/10 threshold an acceptable limit, or should it be raised or lowered?  Vote on the poll, and share your opinion in the comments below.

A diamond is harder to find when it's in a pile of dirt.

I support the more intense moderation.

I've been subject to many rejections in the past and personal page posts more recently. I would rather see the site maintain a high standard and piss a few people off than have to wade thru garbage like you do at DA.

Well, since I don't make any skins, not even a wallpaper I hesitate in answering here.  :NOTSURE:

I think, without a doubt, the way wallpapers are moderated now does seem the fairest. (Don't throw things)  ;)

Sending more or sending less to the main gallery doesn't seem right or fair. Having some sort of cutoff or minimum level should cause skinners to want to achieve a level of quality. Sending uploads to the personal gallery of the skinner still allows those wallpapers to be seen and downloaded.

If you have a favorite skinner do you stop with just looking at the main gallery? I don't. I visit a lot of skinners WC home page, if they have one, to keep up with what they are doing.  :HOT:

Did want to add that I think the notification should say whether the submission was posted in the main library or on the personal page.

Let the people decide...How do they judge wallpapers? Is it their opinion or do they have a standard they go by? You asked.. :)

Yup.

Agreed here as well. I like seeing only the best of the best on the main wallpaper site. If I see something I like, I can always click on the artist's name to see more by them, including the "not quite good enoughs."

Make 2 galleries, like Premium and Standard where the best rated wallpapers goes to the Premium gallery. :d

That would probably cause more issues along the lines of "publicly" saying something is second rate.

A premium vs standard gallery runs into the same problem as exiling or posting things just to someone's personal page.  It's still a rejection of what they feel is their grand masterpiece (even if it's just a MS paint scribble with a lense flare effect)

I think the way it's donee now is fair. Making it too easy to get into the main gallery will give artists nothing to strive for.

I would go for that option too. Some of the stuff on here is too abstract for my liking, which is why i get my minimalistic walls from DA. Cant seem to find too much minimalistic, or not much that i do like.

As I'am 60, I'am from the old school.  One that was taught to do your best and not settle for second best.  As for wallpapers, I'd like to see only the best get posted to the library.  There are plenty of other sites with out standards to upload second best walls.  One mod doesn't play God and decide what wall is good enough to make the library, its a consenses of mods that makes that decision.  So if I was a maker of wallpapers, I'd try and keep trying to get an upload approved because then I'd know I was one of the best and not one that can get anything uploaded.  Thats just my opinion and we know about those.

Totally agree. The gallery should be for the best ones. Besides...those that get to the personal page can always ask for a winkie...right?

Nothing wrong with that WOM...when I started here, all wallpapers were moderated for the gallery, and I would guess more than 65% were rejected, maybe more... and there was no personal page to put rejections in. I for one preferred it that way. ..just my two cents

And bring an end to the Personal Page Elite ?!?!?!?! I like the way it is. Sending more to the personal gallery (and I am aware this will happen to some of my work) would be better than rejecting them.

I think the old way of only letting in the best here at WC should be brought back. We don't want to become DA...I can't stand having to wade through all the garbage walls at DA to find that one good wall.
This isn't DA, and as so many others have said, the last thing I'd want is for this place to become another DA. (No worries, I've no intention of starting another DA rant...my feelings are well know, and if you don't, ask me elsewhere.) I rarely submit wallpapers, but when I did, I was surprised to not see it in the main page, but did find it in my personal gallery. Took a little looking, but I found out why...and I was fine with it. I'll support going back to the old way of doing things. Wincustomize always has had a higher standard, and it should be so. The cream will always rise to the top, as it were.
