Suggestions for new forums

It's great.better, what else do we need?

I don't want this to be a break/fix thread.
It's not sanctioned by Wincustomize nor is it on their list of things to do. But maybe we'll have some good suggestions that they will implement.

I'll start:
It would be nice if the navigation at the top of each forum was duplicated at the bottom.
It would be nice to have the current time near where the last reply time is displayed.

Just noticed an issue with Nicknames, maybe Fuzzy Changed it but it doen't look like it

Just me testing. My account is set so it shows my real name not my nick - it doesn't work properly, showing on some posts and not others, it needs a bug fix

Its showing me your nickname in the post above, as of 3:22am EST, July 28th.

Yeah, the reason I posted it was I saw your nick in one post and then your name in next and your weren't in the active user list.
Yeah that's what I mean, it isn't working. One nick in one post and the other in the next post...

Fuzzy: exactly how long did you wait before you tested to see if the feature was working (or not)? There is a massive amount of data that has to be updated when you change that option, combined with server caching, it could be up to 20 minutes to see the full effect.

Btw guys, this is a suggestions thread, not a bug thread

Good call. I'll create a sticky in Site Issues for that.

Sorry.....I guess I was suggesting it might be a bug.

The "bug" thread ends up being in the WC News Section and this ones in the Site Issues Section. I'd "suggest" movin the "bug" thread.

Andrew... I had an idea about url insertion into posts.... instead of the link automatically coming up [ link="url" ]url[ /link ], could you just have it say Link in the middle instead? That way we dont end up with long url's all over the place where ppl arent sure what to edit...

I second that. Also, how about auto-parsing url's pasted into the posts into clickable links like it used to be? I've noticed that most of the time some new people posting for help just paste the links directly into the post without using the insert url function. Just gets a little tedious having to copy the links and paste them into the browser to see what the problem is. :S

This was just a post to test something.

First Suggestion:
As discussed on IRC today, I think the mouseover "Thread Previews" should be scaled according to user rank (if possible). For example... a guest doesnt get a post preview, and a visitor gets about 50 or 60 letters. A journeyman might get 100, with Moderators and up being able to see 200 or so characters.

(ps: Andrew, dont forget to convert line breaks to *spaces* not just remove them... otherwise the words run together! )

Second Suggestion:
Integrated PM system. It would sure speed things up, rather than having to rustle up some other users email address to drop them a line, even when we can SEE that they are on the forums and active. I think it would be a great way to get information between users, and would benefit the community.

I'd second that, or as an alternative a shout box so you can call someone into IRC. Both would be much more efficient now that we have the "Active User" list.

I am pleased to announce that the editor(s) have been modified:

  • Firefox no longer animates the Link or Img dialogs due to poor performance.
  • Link dialog auto-focuses on the URL textbox
  • Img dialog auto-focuses on the URL textbox
  • Link dialog will now output [ link = (www address) ]WWW Link[ /link ]

Clear your cache. Whenever there is an update announced that's the first thing you should do. Firefox is horrible when it comes to releasing cached stylesheets and javascript files.

# Firefox no longer animates the Link or Img dialogs due to poor performance.
# Link dialog auto-focuses on the URL textbox
# Img dialog auto-focuses on the URL textbox

the box still animates for me - slow draw
no auto focus in either link or image

Any updates about the timestamp and Firefox direct-to-post issues?

Just an idea here. How about a Suggestions or Feature Request category, with subcategories for each Stardock program, the Wincustomize site, the Wincustomize forums?
I don't recall seeing this suggestion yet so if I'm being repetitive, sorry.

A visual indicator next to the Watchlist | My Posts links at the top of the page when there is a new reply. For watchlist it would be on the left, and my posts it would be on the right.

I don't know if this is possible but, if you are on the site when this indicator is activated that should override the email notification of the new reply.

The RSS feed titles are extremely long, currently, with the whole title ("Windows XP Themes, XP Skins, XP Visual Styles, Icons & Wallpapers for your ultimate desktop experience!") and then the name of the feed you're using. I find this is too long for me to easily use, and I'm wondering if this could be shortened to "WinCustomize" and then the feed name. For example... "WinCustomize - Recent Forum Posts". Make sense?
