Suggestions for new forums

Suggestions for new forums

It's great.better, what else do we need?

I don't want this to be a break/fix thread.
It's not sanctioned by Wincustomize nor is it on their list of things to do. But maybe we'll have some good suggestions that they will implement.

I'll start:
It would be nice if the navigation at the top of each forum was duplicated at the bottom.
It would be nice to have the current time near where the last reply time is displayed.

The American format with the month before the day play tricks with my head.

Never thought of that. Too funny.

I agree the date is confusing. It's like counting 1 2 3 5 4 6 7....

deleted my original post as it doesn't recongise any line breaks or formatting using FF1.5.0.4

I have been unable to reproduce this problem. Please start a new post on this issue in the Site Issues forum. (That goes for anyone else wishing to follow up on the issue as well, please)

I don't know if this is doable but... it would be nice if, on the main forum page, there could be "Mark All Posts Read" or something like that, to clear all the checkmarks from the threads. It makes catching up on posts easier. Just my 2-cents.

Sorry, at this time that is not possible.

I hope I'm not going overboard here, but one thing I like on another forum I frequent is that it shows the topic title in the furthest right column along with when the last post was made and the author of it (like Aqua-Soft). With all the topics tucked away neatly now in the forums, a little idea of what the newest post was might be helpful (might be too much though already with the recent posts at the bottom?) Just a thought.

Hover your mouse over the [->] icon in the last post column.

2. A preview button beside "Post Comment"?

Click advanced mode, that has a preview.

4. Get rid of that fade when clicking to insert a picture/link . It slows down my firefox (1.5.0.4), and isn't really useful (is it?).

Yes, it is useful. It keeps a user from trying to perform some other action with that dialog still open. I'll be fighting to keep this one.

NOTE: trying to post this in Advanced Mode using the "Plain Text" Mode. There should be a line break between "sign" and "NOTE".

I'll have a look at the issue. PLEASE keep this thread ONLY suggestions. PLEASE post issues in a seperate thread!

and again....BTW...not in 'Advanced'...just in IE7....

IE7 is not supported. Consider it a miracle if beta versions of any browser perform as they should on here.

Thanks for the feedback Andrew!

Things you have to hover over are bad UI. I suggest that you rethink this (along with the "Tools" menu. New users will never know and "click and learn" is a stinky way to get started with a great site.

Why not make the Advance view the default? It's clear and easy and for those who don't need the extra functions . . don't have to use them.

To keep the page uncluttered. If you want the advanced functionality, click advanced. Otherwise, leave a quickie.

I'll have to disagree with you completely on this one.

I can assume then that you agree with all my other suggestions and they will be applied posthaste?

I like "Stardock" logo next to the employee names. I think something similar would be nice for admins/wizops.

Did you see cerboJD's post above for same (with mock-up )? I agree, it would be a good idea. Another member letting flamebait know enough is enough is one thing, a wizop is another and may be more effective.

I don't want to overwhelm andrew_ with multiple suggestions that he has to keep track of. Please review the previous posts and concur if desired or add new suggestions. Thanks!

i agree with Zubaz..this is not 'friendly' to the user....however if it must stay, it would be better to take the posters name and post time out of the hover-over info, as it is just repeating the info already displayed. i think most people, when viewing the forum home page, are interested in seeing the title of the last post made or edited, rather just seeing the posters name and time which doesn't really help

Andrew....I was posting there that I actually had no trouble doing what someone else couldn't....

This suggestion appears to be in place but seems to give inconsistant results (multiple browsers, PCs, etc). I will monitor and create a new post if needed. Until then, please remove it from the suggestion list.

The mouse hover info is simply there as an extra. Consider that the old forums didnt display nearly as much information. We're giving you the post title and author (in the subforum view), last posted date, last posted by and as an added bonus, if you feel like waiting 1/10 of a second - the last posted/replied-to post title in the mouse hover.

We wanted to go in the direction of the standard forum systems, but we didnt say we wanted to give up being slightly unique. I dig the participation, but this one thing isnt likely to change

i fully understand that you and we want Wincustomize forums to be a little "different", but that diiference should not come at the expense of practicality. it's a 'neat' function, to have the 'hover-over', but is it useful?...maybe it would be better to show the forum topic last added or edited, and have the user's name shown with the hover-over...it just seems that having the nic and time showing without the topic makes very little sense..we were used to, from the old forums, being able to see the last topic edited, but not the user who edited it...whatever you decide to do, the new forums look great

Thanks again for the comments. Like to know that people are enjoying them. At this point it's a matter of space. We had to push to get the topic 'lines' at the height they are now, and I'm not sure it would go over well to increase those even more to fit in Post Titles. At this stage of the game, its not something I would plan on seeing soon.

Please do keep the suggestions coming though. We are implementing a couple of them.

If you are going to keep the fade . . can you put mouse focus on the input box.

I click the hyperlink icon . . page fades, dialog box opens . .I start typing URL . . . It's in the reply form. Doh!!

I'm confused about something, when it shows the poster information on the forums page, is it supposed to be the original author of the thread or the author of the most recent post? For me it seems like it's showing the original author, wouldn't it make more sense to show the most recent poster or is it just updating a little slowly?

I have another question about the timestamp issue (I know it's beating a dead horse) but would it be possible to allow the users to select their time zone so the timestamp will be correct for each user, or would that be too much modding?

The new forums are great, it's just taking a little time adapting is all. Keep up the good work.

On the main forum page . . on the right it shows the time of last post . . hover over that and you get more info. Click and you go to that post.

At the bottom of the main page in the recent post section Title and original author are displayed on the left, last poster on the right. The same seems to be trur in the sub-catagories.

[Title]....................Replies.......[Last post time]
by [Original poster]..........[X]........by [Last poster]

Found the right topic this time, good job.

What I mean though is, to be more clear, is for me it's showing this as the last post info for this forum (Site Issues):

When hovering over the icon it displays the topic title about the line breaks issue in the advanced mode.

But how can that be the last post if mine is the last post at the time of posting this? It's correct in the subforum view and in the Recent Posts lists, but on the forums home it's showing when the last topic was made, not the last post in that forum. Am I making sense now?

I don't know where you are . . but here it's late and you might be clear . . but I may not be. -=sigh=-

I'll read it again in the morning. [of course, it's not important that i understand . . andrew and Co. have been doing all the work. I've just been tagging along.]

just posted and went back to the forums page and . . .there I am . .???

I've uploaded a screenshot: Link (wow the fade thing when inserting a link is kinda slow) :O

On another note, would be nice if it would take me to the newest post instead of the top of the page, is that a confirmed issue or is it just me? I know some other people have been having problems of different sorts. Been happening since before the new forums implementation.

Has anyone else been having issues when trying to post links from the main post comment section (while viewing the topic)? Each time I've tried to make a post with a link, it converts it to html and everything before the link name gets chopped out. o_O

it's showing the last topic created, rather than the last reply posted to a thread.... i hope that make sense Bebi

Now did andrew mean to post issues in a seperate thread or post a seperate thread for each individual issue?
dd/mm/yy is my preference of date formats. I would like to be able to customize this to my liking, but I'm not sure how much the coders want to make forum-specific personalizations.

Each issue . . new thread. Try to be very descriptive in title so duplicate issue threads are created.
