Suggestions for new forums

Suggestions for new forums

It's great.better, what else do we need?

I don't want this to be a break/fix thread.
It's not sanctioned by Wincustomize nor is it on their list of things to do. But maybe we'll have some good suggestions that they will implement.

I'll start:
It would be nice if the navigation at the top of each forum was duplicated at the bottom.
It would be nice to have the current time near where the last reply time is displayed.

It would be nice if the post time said 'minutes ago' instead of current 'local' time. It's really difficult to see how long ago a post was made.

That's why I asked for server time posted (first post). I think "time of last post" is more standard and that's one of the goal of this facelift. New folks complained it was hard to figure out.

I like your suggestion though fuzzy, just not real hopeful.

Ditto on the one about clicking back to forum when done with thread instead of scrolling back up. Of course if you use mouse gestures its really simple to go back And of course there is right click back, but I never could get in the habit of doing that. I also would like more separation from profile/poster to the message. The whole look creates a lot of empty space right now. Interesting that the forums on the webpage don't show as minutes ago since it shows up that way for discussions in SDC.

it would be nice when returning to a thread, to goto the last post you read, rather than the top..

I agree.

i think removing the Channels section is an excellent idea...maybe replace it with the 'Recent Forum Activity' box?

Very good idea!

Or if not removed maybe the Channel Section could be collapsible. Treeview-like with a little plus by each category to click to show or hide the subcategories.

it would be fantastic to get some RSS feeds for the different sections and for the Recent Forum Activity...please please please

The thin, light gray line between replies doesn't work too great. The seperate boxes for each reply worked well on the old forum, but if it doesn't fit in with the new design, just a more significant seperator. Even that gradient that Cerebro did up there would be good. And it would also be nice if I could post with out getting server errors in Firefox.

What version of FF? Been posting all day (obviously ) with few issues.
If they are new and exciting errors I'm sure andrew would love to see them.

An option for how many Recent Activity items to display would be nice.

i was getting server errors when trying to post too...fixed it by logging out, shutting down FF, then starting FF again

I don't know if this is doable but... it would be nice if, on the main forum page, there could be "Mark All Posts Read" or something like that, to clear all the checkmarks from the threads. It makes catching up on posts easier. Just my 2-cents.

to clear all the checkmarks from the threads

Check marks indicate unread posts? cool! I didn't notice, just thought the bold did. I was wondering what they were for. Of course, check marks usually indicate what has been done(post has been read), not what needs to be done (a new post to read).

*test to see if I can get quote to work* Ok I forgot how to do it? I agree, I've been having that problem lately that when I check a thread that I've read, it never goes to the newest post. Same after I make a post, it goes back to the top. :\

Navigation at the bottom again is a must (agree there too).

"It would be nice if the post time said 'minutes ago' instead of current 'local' time. It's really difficult to see how long ago a post was made." - I can't understand this 24hour time thing, let alone trying to translate it into 12hour time (I once made a drawing of a clock with both displays on it and put it on the wall :S), and even then I don't know whose time it is, server time? My time? Maybe I'm just a ditz. I liked the "54 mins ago" thing as well, was so easy to understand. I'm with Fuzzy on that.

I hope I'm not going overboard here, but one thing I like on another forum I frequent is that it shows the topic title in the furthest right column along with when the last post was made and the author of it (like Aqua-Soft). With all the topics tucked away neatly now in the forums, a little idea of what the newest post was might be helpful (might be too much though already with the recent posts at the bottom?) Just a thought.

Ack I was getting an error when I try to post (FF 1.5.0.4). >_< Something about an object? o_O

1-2 1-2 this is just a test. Edit: hooray, it works. Thanks all.

Today's Posts (https://forums.wincustomize.com/?g=today ) doesn't show squat at 11PM CST. Probably because it's tomorrow where the server is.

I suggest that if possible this becomes something less wordy but more like "last running 24 hours of posts."

Whelp! I'm going out on a limb, here! Under "Personal Computing," how about a section for macs? I realize this is a PC community, but I also know that many in the PC community have macs as a second computer who consider it a gain in variety to have comps with one or both operating systems. I am one of those peeps! Just a thought! And hey, even if we can't find enough peeps to post positive comments on mac news, developments, and events, we can at least find reason to tease those who do!

First thing that I want to see is a 'script' that inserts name/time/date on any/every edit and [for admins deletion/thread removal/etc].

We need 'transparency'/accountability for any such changes...

"last running 24 hours of posts."

... or "Posts in the Last 24 Hours"

Jafo, I agree... as long as they are 'admin-visible' only. I dont think the 'general public' needs to know who makes what edit all the time. Perhaps a 'last edited' thats visible to the general user, with more detail for admins?

A few suggestions:

1. When clicking the quote button, it sure would be nice if it could grab the post text, and paste the [

4. I agree... its lagging quite a bit here. Maybe dont have the fade, and just have the box?

3. Sounds interesting, although perhaps a little extreme... maybe just a color gradient for each post of a general user, with logos for admins etc.?

2. There is one in Advanced Mode...

1. Select the text you want to quote, then click the Quote button... that helps you a bit

Agreed on the honorific's return... and, Agreed on the idea of identifying the mods/admins, so new users have a clue. Also request that it'd be nice if the forums "remembered" where I was in a thread..currently having to scroll up & down ain't much joy. But I can live with it if I gotta....

I would love to be able to distinguish the threads in which I have posted a comment from the others. Also, I agree that having a tick as a sign for something that's not done/read yet is a bit tricky. I would prefer to have it the other way round with the unread threads maybe having a red (different colour) sign. NOTE: trying to post this in Advanced Mode using the "Plain Text" Mode. There should be a line break between "sign" and "NOTE".

- Be able to customize the timestap to your liking. The American format with the month before the day play tricks with my head.

-Be able to sort the list in "View Today's Posts" after the category they belong to
