Suggestions for new forums

Suggestions for new forums

It's great.better, what else do we need?

I don't want this to be a break/fix thread.
It's not sanctioned by Wincustomize nor is it on their list of things to do. But maybe we'll have some good suggestions that they will implement.

I'll start:
It would be nice if the navigation at the top of each forum was duplicated at the bottom.
It would be nice to have the current time near where the last reply time is displayed.

if wincustomize don't want to get rid of it, could we at least have the option to collapse the 'Channels' section?...for me it is a complete waste of screen estate..thanks

I thought there was a switch you could use in the URL to supress the whole right column (maybe a frogboy post at stardock.com). . looking . . .

[hum.... apparently we're not supposed to know about this link. Removed.]

No WinCustomize UI... JUST the forums.

If a user tries to edit one of their posts after someone else has posted they are directed to https://forums.wincustomize.com/?g=accessdenied

Why not either 1) hide the edit link or 2) show a better page explaining that you are unable to edit to maintain continuity. You could add a link there to let a mod know that something NEEDS to be editted.

Lots of new goodies since I've posted, good good. Still any chance for the timestamp being fixed so it's understandable per time zone and hour display settings (12hr vs 24hr)? *wink wink nod nod*

Not at present, sorry. All times are EST. If you need to know what the present EST time is then look no futher than the bottom of any forum page.

This is a test, only a test

And what is this meant to show us?

That makes me a very sad bunny.

Anyway....suggestion from kona's suggestions thread: Add the actual reply to the new reply notification email. Can be cumbersome opening up Firefox (or whatever browser one chooses to use) and loading the site to read the new reply. Would be very convenient to just read the new reply in the email itself along with the link to the post.

Well reading the reply in an email could have two negative consequences...

1. The reply has the potential to be enormous. This takes more bandwidth to send, a longer download for the user's email client, the possibility for an enormous amount of text in the email.

2. One less page-view. Page-views are very important to a website in order to track the popularity and userbase of a website. We want to encourage page views, not provide a mechanism to prevent them.

I don't know if this is a bug, but sometimes the 'View all recent posts' is reduced to ten entries on the first page, with the second page as normal. The posts inbetween disappear into nowhere. Closing the browser usually clears this however...

Seen it to. Using FF and IE.

It's a caching issue, sometimes a db issue. In either case, good to know it's not throwing an error, but rather displays *some* data.

(and you replied with this in the Suggestions post. Please use the Forum Bug Thread post instead )

How about a short summary of the reply? Like the first sentence or two? Then a link that says "Click here to read the rest of this entry" like on blogs. Of course omitting any images directly in the email. Just a thought.

Oi, I hate double posting (even if it's a week apart) but I just ran into something and had to mention it. Suggestion: Report button because of crap like this: WWW Link (was some idiot posting a warez link to cursorxp pro).

Have the Report link somewhere next to the Reply • Quote stuff and when clicked on, it will send the report to mod/admin email. Trying to track down an admin/mod email (I don't even know where they are ) and then decide which mod is most appopriate to email is a hassle in my opinion. This would be a lot easier.

Don't mind all my suggestions (sure you're annoyed by now), it's just that I always think of stuff like this and have nothing better to do. How sad.

On a similar note to Bebi's last post...  With the Forum Moderators being listed in each section, and since the names of moderators have been removed when you're viewing a thread, perhaps an entry in the Tools menu to 'Report to Moderators' which emails the mods of that forum would be a good addition.

Way to bump an old thread.

Anyway I agree, I didn't even know where the mod names got moved to. And honestly I never actually go into the individual forums to view the topics anyway, I just view them from the recent posts list.

Bebi Bulma supports Justin's suggestion and her own earlier one

I'm still getting this. Would be nice if it were fixed...

Suggestion: make the reply # a link so that if we want a direct link to a certain post (like in a thread like this that has over 100 replies) it would be easier to get to a specific reply.

Now that I think about it, would be nice for the skin comments as well. As it is now I don't think it's taking me to the new comments (like the forums do with new posts), I just have to go to the last page to find the new ones.

All good suggestions. We're starting to do things a little different in the office, which means that you may not see changes as quick as in the past, however you all may end up seeing more of your requests in each update.

At any rate, I've started both the Reply # link and the report link (which was already in the queue) down the process of getting approved and implemented.

I'd like to see a forum stat page.

Top new post posters (today,YTD, MTD, All time)
Top repliers (today,YTD, MTD, All time)
# of Posts (today,YTD, MTD, All time)
Last [N] new posters (the new kids)
Top 10 most poular posts

Something like that.
