In Windows Vista, even running as an Administrator does not actually give you administrator permissions -- to get them, the OS will prompt you for permission. The debug.err file is currently under c:\Program Files, which means the application cannot write there normally (it can obviously read the config files there just fine). Debug.err probably needs to be changed to go under the current user's documents/GalCiv games. And any other file that would be modified by the game itself, if

I'm playing a game right now (Tough level) where the Drengins and I are at war. My ships are 24 missile offense and 30 missile defense. His ships are missile offense from 16 to 31 (I've only seen one or two at 31, some are 27 or and most are 24 or below). He has some laser defense on some ships (5 to 7). This is from an earlier war when I had lasers. When we called a truce, I started researching missiles instead and when he decided to attack me again, I had fully researched missile defense

(if they attack you, they will get the first shot and may destroy some of your ships before they can even shoot back) This is not true in 1.2. Combat has been changed to give every ship a chance to fire every round -- ships are not "destroyed" until after they've had a chance to fire their shots. <TABLE cellpadding=8 width="95

That's not a good reason. The AI can be "dumbed down" on easier levels if required, but there's no reason that on any level "normal" or above, the AI would intentionally choose an inferior planet. There are multiple threads where this is discussed, and the concensus seems to be that whatever planet the AI finds _first_ is the one that it sends the colony to. So if it sees a class 6 planet before the class 14, it creates a colony ship, and sends it there. It doesn't re-evaluate "hav

If anything, making a planet LOSE PQ when you abandon it is an exploit waiting to happen. Let's say I'm taking on the Drengin. I can protect all of my worlds (have built military starbases around them, have enough ships, etc...) and I successfully invade a decent PQ planet from the Drengin. Maybe it's a class 12. I realize that I cannot successfully defend this new planet, so the Drengin will easily take it back. So to keep them from getting it, I abandon that planet, dr

Now they just need "Precursor Gardens" so we can get 700% food bonus, "Precursor Mint" so we can get 700% economic bonuses, "Precursor Cultural Ruins" so we can get 700% influence bonuses, and "Precursor Arenas" so we can get 700% morale bonuses.

Hmmm, good question. For some reason, GalCiv2 installs itself in multiple locations. I'm not sure how to change the part that wants to go in "My Documents." You don't want to change the part that goes into My Documents. My Documents is meant for your personal saved games, Program Files is meant for the game's files that are required to run. M

If you choose "rare" for stars, habitable planets, regular planets, you'll likely get just one planet per race. I played a large galaxy with 9 races with rare for everything, and I don't believe anyone got more than one planet.

The key that I found is that instead of using Autorun to start the installer, and instead of launch the GalCiv2.exe program from the CD, just run Setup.exe directly. That installed and the game seemed to start up fine. I then downloaded Stardock central and upgraded to 1.2 beta. I have not tried running it, but I know it at least installed and started to run. The only issue I had was the autorun refused to run (crashed).

I play custom races, but I've not tried roleplaying. I just go with whatever works. This is a great idea! I think I know what I'll be doing this weekend.

"Dead tree sales" = boxes. As in paper/cardboard is made from trees. That said, I've heard (though not substantiated) that it's illegal (anti-competitive) for a manufacturer to charge less than MSRP. While the retailers are free to do that, if the manufacturer is selling the game directly, there would be no reason for other retailers to try to sell it since the manufacturer can always sell it for cheaper, since there are no "middleman" costs. Maybe it's not illegal, don't

So apparently some people didn't understand my point. I have 0 ships! Not having production but having ship movement is useless to me. It's VERY useful to the Altarians who just declared war on me and have the second strongest military. Their ships get an extra week for movement. This may completely hurt my chances against them since they can close in on me faster. Leaving the g

Come on people, this is obviously a bug, and not a feature. Let's try not to make a feature out of it, I for one would like to get rid of it. Right you are. In my current game, I was playing for 5-6 straight hours (well, sometimes I walk away for a bit, but I didn't quit the game). I kept making evil choices when presented, and I was goi

This isn't a "game idea" so much as a configuration idea. I have a multi-mon system, and the game always launches onto the primary monitor. However, I want to play GalCiv2 on the secondary monitor. It would be great if there was a line in the .INI file (if it wasn't an option in the UI) to tell it to use the second monitor instead of the first. Otherwise, to play on that monitor, I have to change Windows' primary monitor to my secondary one, then launch GalCiv2, and then once I've

My last game I got the penal colony, which gave me a nice 50% production bonus. So I was happy right up until the pirate broke out and grabbed 4 ships. The next turn they attacked my economy starbase. Which was armed quite nicely -- so much that it took 0 damage from them while taking them each out in one shot. Didn't hear from the pirates again after that. So yes, they do still exist, and

Don't save the ship with the same name. Create a ship template and name it as such, and then when you "Upgrade" it later, save that new design with a new name. That way the tech isn't saved with it.

... and if population is the reason, and it doesnt' seem that more entertainment buildings will be enough (BTW, stock markets give a 10% morale boost as well as boost to your economy and influence), you need to get rid of some of your food plants. Building a food plant on a tile that has more than 100% bonus to food production is probably pretty dumb unless you have enough tiles to build a lot of entertainment centers.

The web poll entitled "Did GalCiv II's lack of CD copy protection influence your purchase?" doesn't really have enough choices. I may have bought the game if it didn't have CD copy protection -- I'm not sure. What the lack of copy protection did allow me to do though was to play the game a couple times (pirate!) -- enough to realize that I wanted to keep the game. At that point, I decided if I was to continue playing, it made sense to purchase it. I originally was going to purchase

The "space size" can be increased by researching miniaturization. The description is that components are smaller, but the way it does this is to increase the overall size for components. So if your ship has 60 "size" points, and you research a 15% miniaturization level, then you should have 69 "size" points. And so on.

Make sure that events like "morale/approval dropped below 50%" aren't repeated frequently. For example, if I'm right on the edge at 50% and it generates the event, and then the population increase (decreasing morale) enough that it drops and then I go adjust the slider the next turn, etc... that it doesn't keep saying "dropped below 50% / jumped above 50% / dropped below 50%", etc.... On that note, I only see an enumeration for morale drops below 50% -- there is nothing to indicate t

Hmm. Looks like we need to disable ESC on that screen then. We don't want to close it until you've made your decision. No, I disagree! You should be able to choose at any time. One time the tech I stole was Xeno Ethics. I had to immediately choose my alignment. It was not something I wanted to do.
