I'd like to think that fans of a game are willing to tolerate other people who enjoy the game in a slightly different way. To be fair, however, knowing gamers, that's probably just wishful thinking on my part.

The following is mostly addressed to Syvere, but it goes for all the anti-option people on this thread. Just to clarify my position here: I am not a twitch gamer. I'm still learning the game, but once I venture out into multiplayer I plan on playing mostly on normal. I do not enjoy fast games myself. I just think the option should be there for people that do. Options are good by definition. I really do not understand the amount of opposition that's building to this. It costs you nothing

Sorry, didn't take any screenshots. It was, as I said above, my first game, and I didn't know how to take any. Nor did I really think to, as there was a lot of intense maneuvering involved and it was well past midnight. Now for the second half, in which Owens' plan of battle makes first contact with the enemy. @Syvere: So you're the gaming equivalent of a grumpy old man. Wonderful. I suppose "pyscho niche-gamer forumite" could be interpreted as a personal attack, but it came at the end of a trail of valid points. Your response merely dismissed him as "halokiddie" which is highly unlikely to be true and of questionable relevance. You're a textbook example of the PC gamer who thinks that anyone with different tastes that yourself is a complete and utter moron, despite blatant evidence that this is not t

I didn't take any, unfortunately. And guys, yeah, don't feed the troll. It's what he wants. Constructive criticism is indeed welcome, however. Note that I am already aware of my poor characterization (I'm working on it, dammit!), and I probably have a whole bunch of technical and pacing errors given that I wrote this around midnight. Speaking of which, I'm going to sleep now. See you all tomorrow.
Oh boo hoo. You have a chip on your shoulder about normal RTS gamers and you want to show it off by trying to deny them their chance to have fun. The reality is, including a faster option wouldn't effect the "Normal" and "Slow" players at all, it'd just divert some of the "Fast" players to "Very Fast". Your attitude is completely uncalled for and completely illogical. If IC wants success (and expansions and sequels) they should keep all game

The following is based on an actual event that happened in my first "real" game (TEC vs the Advent on slow on a small map) a few days ago. I don't have time to complete the whole story at present - I'll be posting the rest of it tomorrow. The Third Battle of Lutiz Part I
Admiral Davin Owens paced ECS Akkan's flag bridge impatiently, a pensive look upon his face. The tac plot in the center of the flag bridge flickered and re-

That's better, than. I don't make the same distinction myself (there are a lot of good fast-paced PC games and slow-paced console games) but to each their own, I suppose.

Ugh. Normally I'd just ignore this and move on (especially because you're a very likeable person otherwise), but I'm second and tired of this kind of stupidity coming from otherwise very intelligence people. Frogboy, I want to make this very clear: I like Stardock and the people that work for it. You're one of my favorite game development companies. Similarly, I'm overjoyed to see Sins doing so well. It's a great game and it fully deserves it. But please, for the love of all th

In terms of what I prioritize? Capital ships first, every time. Capital ships have a great deal more firepower relative to the other units, and they're also far more expensive than even the most expensive cruiser. In terms of how I'd actually approach the battle: My fleet would be one Kol Battleship, one Akkan Battlecruiser, 5 Kodiaks Heavy Cruisers, and 15 Javelis LRM Frigates (or racial equivalent; your mileage may vary). Group the capital ships and cruisers into one fleet, and the Fr
How does giving some people the option to play a fast or slow game force other people to play the same way? Imagine someone's sitting in the game browser looking for a pick-up game set at "normal" speed. All they see are a list of games set to "adrenaline junkie" speed because. To put it another way, it has been my impression based on observation that the majority of gamers will always opt for the fastest speed pos

I don't have a particularly intimate knowledge on the relative resolution of monitors and televisions, but I find it very hard to believe that a device whose primary purpose is to let you see what you

Fleet tactics do matter in Sins. Here's an example:
Pirate bases are ridiculously hard to take. Since raiding parties spawn and return to the base after completing the raid, by the time you're actually in a position to take the system they've got a hundred of everything and the place is just a black hole. Unfortunately, you have to destroy the pirate base in order to stop the attacks, and pirates are a huge drain on your economy late game. Last night I was playing

I did feel sleepy toward the end of my first full game last night. However, I suspect this had very little to do with the quality of the gameplay and quite a bit to do with the fact that I stayed up until 4 AM trying to smash the pirates. I did it, by the way. An Akkan, 5 Kols, a Marza and a Sova with a 22-Kodiak escort to draw the defenders' attention, with 3 Krosevs and about 50 Javelises jumping in from the sun after the Corsairs were all on the wrong side of the gravity well, with s
Arilias You made some very good points but I still feel that the simplification as you call it is thanks to marketing aimed at the younger generation of gamers who are not on the same intellectual level as the minority of us
Maturity and intelligence are not functions of age. This made me a die a little inside. Seriously, guys, this is going to come as a shock to you, but there is no dire threat to gaming. The fact that people play more games on consoles than they do on PCs is not going to end the industry forever. And, infuriating as it may be, neither is the backlash from small-minded, arrogant, pseudo-intellectual fanboys who fail to realize the subtle sarcasm behind lines like "glorious PC gaming master race." Consoles and PCs can indeed live together in

I really hate to do this to you guys, but I'm starting the AAR over. Again. This time, it's because I found out halfway into the game that I'd accidentally set the Altarians to be the embodiments of pure evil, and I like to at least pretend to stick close to canon representations of the races. Also, I totally botched my start. Fortunately, we weren't very far in, so I might be able to get away with it. Really sorry about this, but I do mean to see this through to the end.

They’d arrived at their destination just over an hour ago – a meteor storm to the galactic north of Earth that had been giving off strange energy signatures. This is why you should always colonize Mars. If they do take it, though, your best bet will be to win it back through influence. As far as the Yor/Drengin situation goes, it could be much, much worse. Some tips for prying yourself out of the box: 1. Build starbases. Lots of starbases. You'll need the range boost they give you to cross enemy space. 2. Special colonization techs are your friend. 3. If the Yor and Drengin are getting to the new worlds too quickly

I'd like to respond to this one (Reply #11). My problem is that the game mechanics often aren't a simplification of believable mechanics, they're made up from nothing but the creativity of someone who thought the current economy-sliders would be 'fun' (as an example). Instead they're disruptive. I hate them. I can't manage the taxes of my empire without thinking: "This dude has no clue!" I'm not allocating spending, I'm wipping around sliders in the made up system

Chapter 1 CHICAGO, EARTH, UNITED EARTH ALLIANCE 8:00, JANUARY 1ST, 2226, TERRAN STANDARD TIME Bradley forced himself off his paperwork and shook his head, trying to keep himself awake. He’d never really gotten used to the early mornings at the Presidential Residence. He pulled long hours at the best of times, and since the Crash he’d been awake almost constantly. “Mister President?” Bradley blinked his eyes a few times to clear them, then stared at the f

Maybe that sort of thing is relatively rare. Maybe it's much more common for something lower on the food chain to eventually evolve sentience. Doesn't work that way. Once you develop sentience, you become top of the food chain by default. There might be religious or cultural reasons not to eat meat, but your evolutionary path isn't likely to be one of them. Those furry scavengers were at the rock bottom of the food chain when the rock hit, remembe
