It is right here . Ignorance of the law is no excuse! However note that if you really have backed up everything, including the operating system, then this should not be a problem because when you restore it, the machine ID will be restored as well. If you do a clean install, it will cause re-activation, because your machine ID

No, there is no way for Object Desktop subscribers to download components separately. Standalone registered users of some components are able to, but the components available through that route are often a little out of date (the last minor point release). The problem should actually be fixed. If you see a blank list of products, please go to Tools menu/Settings.../Internet and click the Refresh XML Data button. The components should appear again after you exit the settings dialog.

Activation is in effect on most of our products. As I noted previously, you just hit the WindowBlinds limit sooner because it is more often pirated and therefore has a lower limit before the software gets suspicious. The "act of activating product X" (what happens when Stardock Central tries to activate WindowBlinds on a specific computer) is separate from "has a serial number used to download and activate products X, Y, Z" (your Object Desktop serial). I believe it is actually y

It has to be "validated" twice because there's a difference between downloading and activation. Without the activation on install, in theory you could download a component, archive it, and then attempt to install it on any number of computers. The need to activate on each computer makes this a tad harder. You now have to crack every version of program that you wish to distribute as well, so that it doesn't check for the unique activation code (which it won't be able to get because it ca

We've been preparing SDC to have WindowBlinds 6 when we actually have it available. I would guess that the live configuration got updated with the wrong information. The reason it showed "WindowBlinds6" as installed (and with the same version) is that it uses the same installation registry keys as WindowBlinds 5. It should fix itself shortly (or you can speed the process with Tools/Check for Application Updates).

I don't know this for sure, but at a guess WindowBlinds is pirated/bought with a stolen card more frequently than other applications, so the activation count limit is lower to limit the number of people who can benefit from the stolen account details.

The OK button will un-grey once the settings have been retrieved, which should only take a few seconds. The only reason I can think of for it not to become enabled is an error, but you mentioned no error dialogs coming up, and they should if such an error occurs. Perhaps there is a problem with connecting to the Internet, as it does try to update the news items on startup. It is odd that the OK button is only half-visible though. Note that you can use the thread tools to "watch" threads

Hmm. At a guess it might be unhappy that we are trying to access the SMART data. Other than that, I'm not sure what it might be. You could try disabling SMART in your BIOS if that is an option in there. TweakVista is just asking for information, though, so it shouldn't make your system unresponsive.

Aggressive mode is not guaranteed to improve browsing performance. In some cases, it is possible that it will decrease performance, because there may be insufficient bandwidth to handle all the connections properly at once. I'd be interested in knowing what kind of connection you have. SMARTGuard will only work for systems which are able and setup to return SMART data. Drives connected via SCSI or USB in particular have issues here, but even some ATA drives may not work. You can check thi

You forgot "what's a wiki?" I think the best thing about wikis is that they offer an opportunity for us to build on each other's best work. How often have you thought "wow, that's a great article, I just wish they'd put this point it in a slightly different way, it would have worked better"? Now you can fix it!

We believe we have identified the problem in our installer that is causing this, and hope that the next release will fix the problem. Thanks to everyone who helped track it down!

The initial system assessment is run on first install, and it's possible that if the assessment has not been run since then it is just recording the amount of memory that was installed at the time. If so, the assessment should be re-run. If the computer is running a 32-bit OS, then it will only be able to address a certain amount of memory - 4Gb minus however much space is taken up by hardware devices for "address space". For example, if you have a 512Mb video card, that 512Mb of onboar

Most of Stardock's standalone products are sold on a "major version" basis. That is, for buying TweakVista 1.0 you would get 1.1 and 1.6 but not 2.0. There might be special upgrade pricing for a person who had already bought 1.0. This is all somewhat conjectural as there is not a 2.0 yet. Some other Stardock products have had free major version upgrades, but I cannot give you any assurance of that for TweakVista. While we will try to fix problems and add features to the product after rele

Yes. Go to Start/Settings/Control panel, then System and Maintenance, then Administrative Tools. Double-click Services. Scroll down to Security Center and double-click it. Set startup type to Automatic (Delayed Start) and click the Start button, then OK.

Of course, each WinCustomize nickname has an attached email address . . . . . . but I doubt that's the objective. This sort of survey is typically done to identify the demographics of the site for the purpose of advertising, not for stuffing your personal email account with spam. Stardock wants to know what ads will be the most profitable to run here. Because, you know, that's how the site makes money. <img src="http://images.stardock.com/wc/smiles/Smile.gif" border=0 align="absm

There is no need to bump topics. We are investigating. I guess it's unlikely, but did any of you have a previous version of TweakVista installed (from tweakvista.net) before attempting to install this beta? Failing that, do you have Office 2000? (if so, try this

Did you turn off "Enable window animations"? (in the Display section, Advanced tab). You need to have that on in order for window animations to display. PurrBall's advice should also work for that setting. Note that just uninstalling the program does nothing to change your system back to how it was before. It is assumed that you want to keep the modifications that you make. If you want it back to the original state, you should reinstall TweakVista and reset the items to defaults, or use

Who uses anything but Internet Explorer? The HTTP settings affect IE and everything else that uses Microsoft's HTTP libraries (a surprising amount of things). The Network settings should affect all net-using programs. So, it's not just IE that gets a boost. I'll let you in on a secret, though: There's actually a set of Mozilla/Firefox-related controls beneath the Network Settings area t

Bichur: Yeah, yeah, I heard it the first time. First, ensure that in Services, the first "Condition" box is ticked. If it is not, then tick it, and check again. Failing that...
