Maybe as an option, but I totally agree. I think it adds more of an empire feel to a game. Maybe allow the occasional far flung colony (due to events, worm hole, etc) but most colonies should be connected in range to the 'motherland'. Paul.

I like citizen. It has vague reflections on the French revolution and on the power of citizens. Citizen is such a nice term. It could mean anything from a normal member of society to a behind the scenes power figure. It also is so easy to hide behind the title. 'I'm a citizen' can be used as a statement of strength or a statement of weakness. I'll stick to citizen! paul.

I look forward to the final build of this phase. Will you still be using this website to update on the implementation of new features? I would love to add comments/suggestion to the various features as you're adding them (yes I know this can be done in the pre-beta). Keep up the excellent work, paul.

Are there errors in the posting times being displayed? I posted three messages yesterday to the same thread and all three seem to be posted within an hour and not 6 hours apart. Also today the 'crash, but nop diagnostics' thread says the last post was 0h39m, but the last item in the post was from me yesterday? Is something wrong? paul.

Cari, I've just looked into this, and sure enough if you replace every occurance of tech 63 (nano-frequency electronics) in the improvement file with another tech number, then researching that new tech causes the program to crash. Something is therefore wron with the improvement file. Could it be as simple as too many improvements depending on a single technology? OR maybe the change of adding planet quality affects something (most technologies do not have this flag). Whe

Cari, the crash happens (for me) on ALL galaxy sizes whenever nano-frequency electronics is researched. It's totally repeatable. Every time. It may not be the technology but one of the build advancements which the technology allows, but it causes an instant crash. No messages in debug relating to it though. Paul.

Not sure if I understand the question, but according to my task manager, the galciv process is taking up 25944K memory. Are there any other processes I should be looking at? Paul.

Nice idea Jack. I liked it so much I tried it. Changed all research costs to 5 and then researched one tech a turn (doing nothing else). I could research everything else without any crash until the only item left was nano-frequency electronics. This caused a crash. I also changed the name to something much smaller, but it still caused a crash when researched, so it's not the length of the name. Paul.

Just putting the last few lines of my debug file up here in case it helps locate this memory leak. this is a standard debug file after running galciv and then exiting before a single turn. Debug Message: Main Shell terminating normally Debug Message: MemMan: Unable to find pointer in GetBlockInfo. Memory system: Palette ASSERT ERROR in file g:\projects\pear\source\memman.cpp at line 579. Debug Message: MemMan: Trying to free memory that has not been allocated. Memory S

Cari, just to confirm that my computer at home has a Creative Audio PCI sound card and gives the following dta in debug. Debug Message: Initializing sound card. Debug Message: No Music\*.mp3 files in current directory. Debug Message: No Event Music\*.mp3 files in current directory. Not that then. I think Jack is correct with the Nano Frequency Electronics. It's totally repeatable. Crashes every thime this is researched.

I noticed a crash on exit yesterday. The message displayed on screen was Damage before normal block #15556 All I had done was started the game and immediately exited. The problem has NOT occurred again and I have not managed to repeat it. Paul.

Just had a read. Looks good. The weakest area in my opinion is probably research. You barely mention it. Which leads to the question, can a small empire ever out research a large empire? The document stresses how a smaller empire can out influence a larger empire but will the same be true for research, or will a larger empire (thus larger population) always come out on top. This is often a problem with these types of games. Paul.

Interesting, how can you attack a planet with a transport on the same turn that you destroy all ships in orbit? When I have a transport beside a planet it gets destroyed if you attack ships in orbit. Transports only move one space per turn. So if you cannot have a transport beside the planet (or it gets destroyed) you cannot possibly capture the planet on the same turn anyway. Or am I missing something? Paul.

Cari, I am running on two different machines one at home and one at work. Both are currently running windows 2000, but can boot to 98 as well. They both have the same crash problem though. The current machine (work) does not have a sound device and has the following errors in the debug.err Debug Message: Initializing sound card. *DEBUG ERROR: *** Error creating DirectSound object *** Debug Message: No Music\*.mp3 files in current directory. Debug Message: No Eve

I know Jack. There is no error or problem with this. Just some confusion when you can see planets which according to the mini-map are 2 unexplored sectors away. The confusion comes from the fact that this sector is considered explored for revealing planets but not explored for removing the grey from the sector in the mini-map. These two should use the same explored criteria. Paul.
