I would have to join you in your exasperation. I started substitute teaching in the Intermediate and Junior High last year, and some of what I heard was just plain scary. In the Jr. High (7 & 8 gr.), out of @800 students, almost 500 of them had different last names than their parents. Half of them (400) did not have an adult at home when they got home from school in the afternoon. Half of those (200) did not have an adult at home when they left to

Thank you all for reading and for your amazing comments. Texas Wahine: Yes, I noticed, and I almost fell off my chair in shock. I kept shouting for SPC Nobody Special to come see. He hadn't even read it yet at that point. mrt949: My husband was in Korea the year before last, and I've heard alot of stories from there as well. I didn't see anything, but I heard. I agree with you about the stereotypes of the female GIs, but I was

Interesting idea to say the least. I guess I will just have to suffer being the damsel in distress abducted by the foul pirates...... I spent the summer after high school playing in the orchestra for a local production of the Pirates of Penzance. I can't think of pirates without laughing.

Maybe they marry just so they can share the family benefits..... In a lot of cases yes. Some go to pretty outrageous lenghts to keep them, too. I know of one lady whose husband left her for another man. Since he is still in the military, she basically blackmailed him, saying that if he waited until s

When I was a teenager, farts were a rather embarassing thing at home. My bedroom was in the basement, right under the living room. Several times when I had friends over, we would hear loud rumbling sounds that they would mistake as thunder. There was no rain, no clouds, no lightening, no thunder. It was my mom. She would sit on the hardwood floor in the living room while working on some project, and when she let one rip, the sound was amplified th

I don't think we can just pull out and leave. That's been one of the biggest mistakes we've made in the past, and all we've accomplished with it was to make even more people hate us. One of our country's strong points has been in the stance that we will NOT NEGOTIATE with terrorists. You can't. If you give in once, they'll make you do it a hundred times. Unfortunately for us, other countries in Iraq with us have negotiated and/or capitulated with

It is a common illness in every military town.It is not very contagious once you are fully aware of it. I guess this is the first post where I've really seen it, but the others were training posts, and on reflection I can remember some incidents there as well. Like the soldier who lived a few blocks aw

*now I really am evil, huh?* nah..... pseudosoldier: Thank you, it's so nice to see a soldier standing up for their wife. I don't see enough of that, and it helps me remember the good aspects. There was a guy I worked with this summer who had just gotten back from Iraq and was in th

Brings back memories!!! When we were in college, our phone number was one digit off from the grocery store on the other side of the block. We kept getting calls from these little old ladies and little old men about their grocery orders. Even had a couple leave messages with their shopping lists, even though the answering machine had our names on the recording. Oh well.....some people just don't learn.

Disclaimer: THIS IS A RANT! Before you break out the matches, lighters, or flamethrowers, please actually read the following...... Army Wives disgust me, it's true. What? Oh, you thought maybe I forgot that I am an Army Wife? Nope, I haven't forgotten. Nor do I disgust myself, with a few exceptions. No, I don't mean all Army Wives disgust me.

Very nice job on the page! I just got home from work and can't wait to talk to my boss tomorrow. He has a large trashcan full of cans (I think it fills up every couple of weeks) that he's been saving up to recycle, but there aren't many places around here that will pay for them. I'm hoping to find somewhere soon--even if I have to drive a little ways it would be worth it, because I can load a lot of cans in the van at one time! T

I've done this many times as well, mostly when it comes to politics and the war. I've noticed though, that even when I give in and talk about things that have happened that the media doesn't report, which would be a major point against what people are arguing about, my comments seem to be ignored. There might be another 20 comments after mine, but nothing addressing what I said. Could be that others were just censoring themselves, but I doubt it.<br

Actually, he is in the States (yes Wahine, Texas is still a state), not Iraq. However, part of his unit is deployed, so the entire unit is on stoploss until after those in Iraq return. There is still a chance that he may be sent over at some point this year, but it's not very likely. I hope you are able to join your hubby in Richmond soon, little_whip. Being apart is definately not fun......

Thought about catching her and getting her fixed? You could let her go again, she could stil keep mice away, and you wouldn't have even more unwanted kittens around.

My hubby believes that cats should have pretentious names, hence our male cat being named Euripides after the Greek playwright. Mayhaps the same rule could apply to Henry since he is a small dog?

Awesome Idea!!!! Many areas offer considerably more for recycling, too. I've been surprised at how many places do not have recycling programs set up. Please keep us updated on progress. btw, need a secretary?

As for the "one person, one job" thing, dharmagrl--it has been the bane of my existence for the past 5 years. I have to keep reminding myself that expecting logic or common sense when dealing with the military will get me nothing but a migraine.

Actually, I think you are all pretty funny.....and now I'm learning the code. Not sure what my power would be....preferably not just a sidekick. Lush is one word that could not describe SPC Nobody Special, though. That was only the second time he has had an alcoholic beverage, and it was an experience. I couldn't stop grinning at the restaurant (it was the only way to keep from laughing). Did you read the article he posted about it?<

I didn't look at the comments on his blog too much, but from the few times I did, I would say that if anything on his blog was an OPSEC problem, it was some of the questions and answers that others posted in the comments rather than the articles themselves. It's nice to have him back in some capacity, though.
