We are trying to get our cars registered and inspected here in Maryland. What a waste of time. First of all, it takes 1 1/2 hours to complete the inspection. THEN the emissions test. Then take the proof to the MVA and wait... in... line. Then pay through the nose at each step of the torture just to enjoy the privilege. Th

The only thing that Hirohito was forced to undergo was to sign away his claim of being divinely appointed as Emperor. That was actually the only thing he was allowed to keep. From Wikipedia: Hirohito was spared trial and reta

You would have loved Chevy Chase and his Weekend Update back in the 70s! I think that was the inspiration for Jon Stewart. Would have loved?!?! Would have?!?! I was born in 1970, Doc, and do remember Chevy trying to call Angola and accidentally getting his girlfriend Angela's house. I remem

The small and simple acts of kindness are not going to be noticed. Didn't Christ say (paraphrased - I don't bring my Bible to work) that we have to shy away from doing things for the accolades of men, and rather glorify God through our secret acts? The Pharisees were guilty of doing things for show, so they could look more righteous than the run-of-the-mill Jew. I don't try to perform showy events for others; I just try to serve my fellow man and, b

Dead dead dead. It's that simple. Put him to death once for each person he killed or had killed. He is a murderous dictator who, inexplicably, still has a following of sycophants who think that the Sunnis will remain in power. He will continue to inspire as long as he is alive to, maybe, one day, resume command of Iraq. He deserves to die and he will die.

Well, I have got to say, as a card-carrying Republican and a quite conservative person, I have a guilty pleasure. I think that The Daily Show with Jon Stewart is one of the funniest shows I have ever watched. Consistently the headlines knock me right over with their ability to skewer the day's events. Jon Stewart's delivery is flawless and cunning. <BR

Not only am I impressed, I am touched. In a bad place. SNS claims offline that the poem was original. I believe him, I believe him.

Pure comedy. So let me get this straight... Jack-off Thompson decides to start a moral crusade for his own self-serving purposes. Penny Arcade calls his bluff and starts returning his BS with interest. Thompson tries to involve the police by playing the "cop-killer" card. I just wish I had popcorn.

Every month is White History Month! Every university is a White University! Every congressman is in the White... oh, wait... Honestly, until we can destroy these stupid and self-serving stereotypes in government and daily life, there will be no progress. If only there was a live-and-let-live mentality that pervaded all these debates. I really do subscribe to the belief that a person should be judged by his or her act

Do you think that in this net-centric, 24-7-365 news world of ours, that Osama and pals DON'T watch the news? That they don't have live streaming internet in their Pakistani cave system? They certainly plant their messages onto the internet with impunity; you think their internet's set up to upload only? It is ridiculous and naive to think that al-Qaeda does NOT watch the news. They take the liberal hand-wringing and self-loathing and Bush-bashing; they see it as signs

As a recent transplant from Texas to Maryland, I am excited to see the change of seasons here. The fall colors is one thing I have truly missed from being in a place with, as you say, two seasons. The foliage is beautiful, and the best is yet to come!

This will be our first actual winter in about six years. From what we're being told, Maryland's winter will be a doozy, too. We've been living in Texas, and before that, coastal California. Funny story about the weather in Monterey, CA: we drove to visit family in Salt Lake City at Christmas. When we left Monterey, it was 55 degrees and cloudy, just like every day in Monterey, regardless of the season. We drove up and over the Sierra Nev

acband_girl, I'll bet you can get some good discussions. Just post things that get the conversations going. You could learn something. I do, every day! BTW, I'm a medium-ly old fart, mid-30s. And I'm lovin' JU!

The door to my new job is just down the hall from a nondescript door. The door's placard says "Corporate Machine Room". Finally! I have found the corporate machine. Now do I join it, or do I rage against it?

What a film! Super genius! Cracking good fun, wouldn't you say, Gromit? I have got to hand it to Nick Park, he has a skill that has been honed to a finely-tuned art. His ability to make stop-motion photography into a seamless, flawless moving p

Did anyone ever wonder why there were no Nuremberg trials for Japan after the war? The Koreans and Chinese will contend that quite a bit of ethnic cleansing and racial slaughter occurred under Japanese rule. Japan tried to eradicate Korean language and culture from the mid-1910s through till they were forcibly removed from the Korean peninsula in 1945. The only thing that Hirohito was forced to undergo was to sign away his claim of be

Well, the baby is three months old now, and quite a handful. We're very happy that he's healthy and well... in fact, a little too well, as he is at the 95th percentile on height and weight. First kid we've had to top the charts! All our others were below average for their age. Four kids is a terrific challenge, and like y'all have said, very rewarding. I would not have it any other way!

When you say "fiscal federalism", I guess I am not following you. I always thought federalism was a system of government, not an economic policy like capitalism or communism. The United States, I was led to understand, is both federalist (politically) and capitalist (economically). Canada has a wealth of socialist programs, but, like the UK, is not fully socialist since it does not support a full redistribution of wealth like a communal system of go

Sixty years ago, the International Military Tribunal held what has come to be known as the Nuremberg Trials, which endeavored to judge all the people who had been complicit in the Nazi Party and Germany's instigation of war. The point was to ferret out and prosecute all those who inflicted Nazi rule on an unsuspecting Europe. I quote from Wikipedia, which
