I don't give a damn about live coverage. A scrolling newsbar at the bottom of the screen will say everything they need to, and then quick updates instead of commercials if they feel it's incredibly important. News is so easily available entertainment channels should think twice before interrupting their primary business to provide something everyone else does better.

His name was Muggaz, cacto, perhaps you knew him? I vaguely remember him. He hasn't posted much in ages though. In any case I wouldn't worry too much about my dislikes and prejudices. One of my best friends is from Alabama. Being anti-American is a pose, and the most irritating one I know, so naturally it's something to indulge in at every opportunity. Everyone needs a hobby in their young age.
You've done a great job of exemplifying why this thing made me mad, Cacto. Between the top gear guy godwining himself on his blog and you basically advertising that you are biased against a whole region that you know nothing about... wow, this has been productive. I'm always been a firm believer in the importance of collecting prejudices. It's the only way to survive, or at least it's the most popular. And if you're not doing the popular thing, wh
If you look at where crimes are committed in the US, you'll find them mainly centered in not only the "progressive" urban strongholds, but also in places that have more strict laws pertaining to weapon ownership. I tend to think you would have never said anything so crass about the really unwelcoming, violent areas if there was a racial connotation to it. Well, surprise, there was, you just don't see "white" as a race, or respect the validity of my heritage.
That's probably because it's illegal to display the swastika in many European countries. Here we have a little thing called 'freedom of speech.' Unless, of course, you preach support for terrorists. And then you have a nice chat and a relaxing seaside holiday in sunny Cuba. Or some fun with water in the plush comfort of one of your security force's interrogation chambers. Let's be realistic - there is no 'freedom of speech' anywhere i
It's like someone in China complaining about US human rights. People in glass houses have always known where to throw their stones. It's a matter of practice and architecture. No one is more qualified to criticise than someone who's also at fault.
No, it's funny because it tags one of the last cultures that it is fashionable to be hateful to. Paint up your cars and go just about anywhere else in the world and the response would be outrage. In the American south it is "humor". I don't find it funny. Ah, so Little Britain is unfashionable in the UK and elsewhere? It's kind of sad if satire of the powerful is unfashionable in the US, but that works for me - I was more precognisant than I expected -
Right there it is. Southerners vs... soccer louts. Southerners vs... skinheads. You take tens of millions of people and compare them to a small slice of miscreants in another nation. Like I said it is the difference between "freedom fries" and actually going to France to threaten people and watch them run. You know I was only using shorthand for redneck or whatever the current label of choice is for the small group of rednecks in this world. Don't be a
They obviously went there to bait people into anger, and they got so little they had to edit the video heavily to show it. It's sad. What is saddest is that the REAL act of intolerance was the one you are calling funny. High horses are for losers, Baker. If you're the kind of person who gets rowdy when you're insulted you deserve every injustice a cruel world throws at you. Sure, it's not fair, but nothing is, so if other people find it easy to ge
It's been pointed out to me that the old flag, rather than standing for a discredited set of social and political values, is now just a fanciful graphic. The Dukes of Hazzard, after all, had one on the roof of their car, and no one thought it was in any way distasteful. It was just the good ol' boys from the South being sentimental about their roots. And that seemed like a fair comment. I like a sense of history as much as anyone. But then something e
I have a very good sense of humor and can easily and readily laugh at myself with no problem at all. I really tried to find something resembling humor in this and it simply wasn't there. This wasn't funny in any way. It's an obvious pile of garbage intended to insult and denigrate people based upon a stereotype. Which is by definition funny, especially when the stereotype is lived up to. Stereotypes exaggerate life, which is why they're such an integral
What was funny about it, what part? Did you read the blog? Is that part of the skit? I'm sitting here trying to find something comical in it. What blog? Can you give me a link? Top Gear is a TV show made by the BBC. It's been going for years and years. They do roadtests of sportscars and have a regular segment where they make minor celebrities race around a track in 'a reasonably priced car'. I haven't a clue what you're talking about Baker.
So you guys don't think the video was even a little funny? Come on, Top Gear gets its jokes from taking advantage of the stereotypes about car fanatics, chavs and foreigners. I didn't see the article on Digg; the site is of no interest to me. I got sent the link by a mate. In any event you should really watch an entire episode first before so giving them the Eurodweeb label. It's hilarious. This is just a skit that pokes fun at you. There are others, and anyway, if you can
Check this video out and tell me it isn't so: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6MJVzXbqRU Bloody Rednecks. Top Gear is one of the best shows on TV; how dare they attack?
Until that time we are winning big time and that is a symbol that is easy for all to see. Positive thinking is important. I do think though that better use could have been made of that symbol of freedom, but perhaps you're right - the only symbol those fighting in Iraq (on either side is what I suppose you mean) is victory, so there was nothing more to do after Bush landed on that aircraft carrier. Especially since sw
I don’t know what you mean by soft power. You might know it as 'hearts and minds'. Modern warfare demands the use of PR and psychology. People are more resistant to traditional propaganda, and so a new kind of war is required. Symbols are particularly important; an Islamic regiment maintaining peace in Baghdad might have helped, but that's really by the by. The war effort lacked the essential approach necessary to today's warfare. War must be rebadg
I asked an honest question, no hidden meanings. No one seems to be able to answer it so it is too complaicated or it is too simple for a liberal to manage. You actually asked several questions, each of which has yet to be answered in full, and none of which can be answered until 2057. Why? Because we won't know what the government knew until their records are released. Until then no one, including the right, can make a final statement on whether
Actually no. He could have been, but now he is just a caricature for the reasons that Doc Miler stated. Einstein pontificating on Psychology would be equally laughed at. The right might consider him a caricature, but I can tell you now he is immensely influential on the left. He's practically a god to many 'true believers'. I'm not sure where you get the idea of his irrelevancy from. His public lectures are always packed and his books sell across
Sometimes when I see the enormous bonuses paid out by large companies to incompetent CEOs I'm inclined to agree with Col Gene. But then I remember - companies have stockholders. It's up to them how much they pay their staff. And if they're stupid enough to pay a CEO who loses them money a multi-million dollar bonus then the company deserves to fail. Shareholders are the citizens of the corporate democracy, and it's not up to us outside to tell them how to waste their cash. As for si
However, just as I did for Brandie's JU Baby Shower, I would be happy to forward any cards, letters, or packages to him, as long as no one wants to mail a load of bricks or a bowling ball, lol, that can get a little expensive to remail! Just play mail pong - in Australia you can just cross out the address, write "Moved" and write in a new one and, so long as the package isn't altered in any way, just shove it back in the mailbox. You might want to give
That's a clever tax-break! It's hard to believe the American people let their legislators get away with it. If they shut that off surely it wouldn't be necessary to raise taxes. All those devious richies would be paying tonnes more, and all it would take would be the equivalent legalese for "if more than x% of your income is from dividends pay income rather than capital gains tax on that amount".
You're totally right Brad. The US is the only Western country with a birthrate that's not in decline. To be honest I think there's something deeply wrong about western culture that cripples a country. We're so rich and hard-working few people are prepared to suffer the poverty and the career death of having a child. It was only when women were chained to the kitchen as baby factories that western culture was self-propagating. Now, when women don't have to have children, they choose
How do you expect anything he says to be anything but a liberal talking point. Sure, but the thing is Chomsky writes liberal talking points. He's an enormously influential man. I'm basically suggesting that if you don't understand a particular concept, go back to the person who thought it up in the first place and see why it made sense to an intelligent, articulate person (or an unintelligent, incoherent person, as the case may be). Then you ca
I imagine you'll be extremely glad to know that this year a team of scientists in Tokyo will be attempting to engineer the same events that led to the Big Bang in a 'controlled environment'. With any luck one of the possible side-effects of the experiment won't take place (the universe's implosion). Frankly I'm happier when scientists keep their dirty mits off the engines of reality.
Sorry it won't help me to understand the liberal mindset. Most liberals quote books, and documentries but have no ability to put what they have read into their own words. It is just reteric with no meaning behind it. That was what I was attempting to learn or justify. Guess I will have to try another way. Right... So you had this idea in your head that you were trying to reinforce. Don't you realise most righties just quote books and magazines and
