Confused Beginner

Hi, I am completely new to using 3rd party themes for Windows. I have Windows 10, and I have done lots of Googling, but I still can't seem to find the information I need. I want to create custom themes from scratch, like the people on Deviant Art do, for myself and for others to download. First may I check that the little knowledge I do have is correct?

Am I right in saying that there are 2 types of software for patching? One replaces 2 (3?) .dlls in order to use 3rd party themes, and you could do this manually (so I don't understand why I need to use software to do it). The other software patches these files "in memory" and runs in the background so that none of the .dlls are actually changed?

Which method should I use and why? Why use software at all to do this?

What steps would I have to take before and after a Windows update?

I am aware of Windows Blinds, but it doesn't give me the desired level of control over my theme.

Thanks so much, if someone could point me in the right direction, I will know what to search for.

As you mentioned before... you're aware of Windowblinds and its limitation. But I don't know what your expect level of control over your theme. Best thing is, try it out. There is free Windowblinds trial here : https://www.stardock.com/products/windowblinds/download and you can see if it get up to your expected level.

Thank you,
