depends on modem kona, i have ADSL but only a 576kb modem, currently saving for my 2GB one
Reply #52 Top
OK I understand. I wonder if they make higher speed cable modems than the one I have.
well ADSL do 2GB that i know of so i assume cable isn't that far behind or even equal?
I have no clue. I'm just happy I don't have dial-up.

And here it is cheaper by 5 bucks than DSL.

It reads 50 megabits not gigabits. I'm running a cable modem that's pulling down 1 Gigabite a second right so i guess DSL is slower than cable.
I think that is the right speed. whenever I dl something, the dialog boxes say 200 kilobytes pes sec to 400 kilobytes ber second. Usually about 235 or 300. My friends DSL always gets about 68 kilobytes a second.
as i said its only slower cause of the modem. you have a 1GB modem yeah? ADSL has one and also a 2GB one

ehm, just get back on litestep...
You said it is hard code not? what is the code it is made in? VB, java, xml???
Last time I downloaded the tryial I had to re-install my comp...
just looked trough the litestep library, looks pretty cool, themes like sputnik makes me almost considder to switch (again and mess up my system)
ehm, how easy is it to restore your comp?
Styl...on a Win 9x box it cannot be simpler.
On a NT-based system....NT, 2000, XP....there is a 'little' more effort needed...but NEVER will you genuinely ever need to re-install Windows...
Well, I do have a old comp here, maby I will give it a try, what kind of code language is used?
Configuration is via 'rc' files....straight text-based coding....not really that difficult to pick up.

If you wish to try LiteSTEP then I'd suggest starting with a Win 9x box....can be more user-friendly if you don't actually 'need' to rely on an installer.

LiteSTEP 'can' be as brain-dead simple to set up as you could ever imagine.....or, unfortunately, give you every shade of grief and frustration....

I use win98, Install it on a laptop, as far as I see from screenshots it looks pretty cool. Don't yet have a idea what kind of team I will build.. any sugestions?
(sorry, when I run a skin on my desktop witch I didn't 'create' personally I just have to build one myself...)

.rc file, Found it, not really rocket sience huh Think I could learn that, das litestep slow down your system (much.) ?
so this has turned into a LS thread? sometimes even a topic like rips ends up in something productive.

the slowdowns you might have noticed with other desktop replacements is because those run on top of the Windows default shell (explorer.exe), so if you are running more programs you can´t expect them to use less resources.
with shell replacements as LS that´s different. you run LS instead of the regular Windows, so LiteStep will not slow down your system, but make it faster. also on Win98 it will make it more stable.
how many resources LS uses depends on the theme you use. many people say that the resource use depends on the number of modules you run. sounds logical, but i have pretty much experience in LS and in my experience the amount of images and the amount of transparency in these images are far more important than the number of modules.
I see... So a good LS theme has a good look, but not too much transparency...
Styl...that's right, so don't use my stuff....tends to have a fair whack of trans....just look at my WinAMP sometime...
just try what you like. i´d guess 99% percent of the themes here are faster than explorer.
you have something WITHOUTH trancparency too?
Btw: you really have some cool themes there, never tryed to make them for wb?

a good start is Mojomonkee´s tutorial: http://students.seattleu.edu/connolb/tutorials/litestep_tutorial/litestep_part_1.html
it has all the links you need to begin.
i said it several times at other threads that the links on the LiteStep section here needs to be updated. just one line in a text file, but nobody seems to care ...
www.litestep.net is the place to go.

Well, I will put some themes there when I understand how it works...
