GUIOlympics 2003?

GUIOlympics 2003?

Just wondering if there will be a GUI Olympics this year, and if more skinning applications will be entered this year.

Yeah, can't we organise a "gui olympics" on Wincustomize, we open a new libary, there you can upload your gui, and the rating system will do their job, or admins, if they have a verry little bit of time left...

Wait a sec, Hippy, how can you lob a WinAmp3 skin? I haven't been able to grasp anything digital with my hands yet.

WOM, at the time I thought they were lame because I saw better stuff fairly often on WC then fairly often.

Trying to interpret your reply, you're saying it was mostly a management problem?

With regards to future GUI Olympics, I think the names and homes of the entrants should be hidden until final results are revealed.

This way (hopefully) the skins will be judged more on merit than who they were made by or where they're from.

craeonics, to lob a skin:
1) print it out on paper
2) tape paper to brick
3) throw at object of choice
4) repeat steps 1-3 until you gain your sanity back (if you ever had it)

Aqua, yes it should be a blind vote for sure and exactly for the reasons you state.

Isn't that how it worked last time?

It's rather silly to start debating what the rules should be for the next contest, when in all likelihood there won't be another.

Anyways....do you honestly think that everyone wouldn't be able to tell who the author is just from seeing the skin? With a few exceptions, most of the more well known skinners have very distinct looks to their skins.

yes...

and, that option is still a possibility, which is indicated by the following...

If there is another GUI Olympics, it will be done in a very different way.

So much has changed even in a year.
"

so...

I do think it is a possibility, yes, and I also think that if people take an active part in being positive about it before, during and after, it has even more of a chance of coming about and maybe evolving into a yearly event which could be not only fun but a positive driving force behind more people getting into skinning and driving those already in it to higher levels of skill and creativeness.

I still think it should be in 2006

But what about 2004? We'll call it the winter games.

anyway, I am sure there can be a GUI olympics, but I guess, it would have to be very different from last time.

Who will vote? How will it be handled? I have no idea.

I would love to host a olympics, but the winners wouldn['t get anything but a banner that says winner and reconition. Maybe a contract to make more skins??? Or turn it into a skin siute>

can we all just get allong?

If I remember right (I probably don't), there was mention that the next Olympics might be centered around WinAmp. I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong. Also I think Frogboy's stomach may be doin flipflops at the thought of it, as there was, how shall I put it, a certain degree of controversy last time around...

I'd love to see another GUI Olympics, but purely as an onlooker since I gave up making my 'lame' WindowBlinds skins...

The problem with the original contest came down to the rules not being set in stone from the start, and being completely open to interpretation. Some of the people who caused a fuss, myself included, were doing so in an effort to get an unambiguous set of rules drawn up before it was too late. There were also major flaws in the judging system which caused many unexpected problems. The participation of the public, potential bias of the judges, and open advertising of which sites the skins were affiliated with were some of the most heated debating points.

Obviously there wouldn't be much point in trying to hide the author of a skin, but openly admitting which site they were representing caused huge problems when combined with the public vote.

The problems encountered weren't so huge that they couldn't be easily eliminated in another contest, and I think everyone accepted that the first Olympics were to be a learning experience for all. The main hurdles to get over now would be financial backing and organisation of the event. I'd certainly be willing to help with the latter.

wait a minute...

why does any skinner have to be represented by a site?
Because that was the whole idea... as it is with the real Olympics (i.e. you represent your 'country' - e.g. a Skinning Community).

If it was everyone representing only themselves then it would just be 'any old contest'.

Another cool thing about it was that you got 50% of your prize and the skin site you represented got the other 50%... so everyone benefited really.

Skin sites are expensive to run because of bandwidth so any money won just went straight back into the site(s)... and the skinner got to feel that he was giving something back to his favourite community.

It was designed that way to create some healthy, friendly competition between the Skinning/Graphics sites and get new people into skinning... and really just for some Fun and to see what people came up with

Well, maybe there can be a host site that is not a 'skin' site or graphic site that hosts it?

how many skinners can be representing one site for a specific catagory?

Do it for the people!!! Somebody neutral must want to host it. The judges could be a mixture of vote from the puplic and a team of skin site authors and owners of specific programs.

Authors would represent skin sites and nationalities or cities (ie home town)

I don't know. Maybe someone will take up the chanlenge to figure out how it can work?
