GUIOlympics 2003?

Just wondering if there will be a GUI Olympics this year, and if more skinning applications will be entered this year.

I'm currently in training for the skin shot putt.
At present, I am able to lob a Winamp 3 skin over a bus.

/me thinks he's for the high jump........

Actually the Olympics are every 2 yrs. The Summer and Winter ones are alternated every 2 yrs. So its 4 yrs between each Summer one for example, etc.
So I would think that we won't have GUIOlympics til next year.

if it is done again, the old process will probably change drasticaly from what I gathered when this was asked about three months ago....

If it is done again, still some hard feelings about some peoples actions and such from the last one, and can't say I blame them any either....

I guess a bunch of people were really nasty, and then some of the sites involved go just as nasty in another way. It sounded to me like a group of friends with so much lumbar deciding to build a tree fort and one has all the lumber, nails, hammers and hand saws, even have the tree to build it in, and many of the others decide they should either be in control of the design and such, while not providing much of anything other than I wanna be in charge or I should have more say so, or your only doing this to make you lok good, etc... really childish stuff from what I got from it all...

heck, ask Brad about it, or KarmaGirl or any of the other amins/op's. They will tell you about it most likely and explain just how much effort was put into the whole thing, while so many ended up doing nothing much but complaining and dumping on them and it for all of thier times efforts and yes even money....

why i think it probably wouldn't happen and if it did, it would be very different this time around...

very sad actually that it all went down like that, because all Brad and the rest really wanted to do was offer something for everyone and in the end wound up at the short end of the sitck for it...

Just imagine the phrase 'looking a gift-horse in the mouth'....that was the Gui Olympics...

I think this is a moot thread guys.
Unlesss someone else stumps up the cash and resources, there won't be another GUI Olympics.

I want to add a new olympics game: lets see how far we can throw our computers out a window in favor of buying macs.

Just kidding.

dunno why there would *have* to be cash involved really, if it must be, then maybe Stardock would be willing to supply a subscription to ODnet or Wincustomize or some such...

dunno, but is a prize that important? wouldn't recognition be enough?

There were cash prizes, OD renewals T-Shirts and things. The problem arose because everyone wanted to make the rules and have the most say. To much competetion from the judges from other sites. It was a bunch of back stabbing one upmanship crap that brought the eventual downfall of more GUI Olympics.

who cares about prizes????

Judges score and boom there you have it.

I guess cost would be a problem... bandwidth maybe... can't think now. Brain tired.

'Cost' isn't/wasn't a problem....lack of appreciation of/for the expense was...

mmm, spoiled child syndrom?

i believe once Frogboy said that Stardock would consider funding another GUI Olympics, but someone outside of the company would have to do all of the running / organising.

given the pain and grief he seemed to go through last time, that was quite an amazing offer, presuming i am remembering it correctly. however, i don't recall anyone offering to take up the offer.

From my point of view, the problem with the GUI Olympics was that the majority of winning themes were lame. I see much better stuff fairly often.

Lame!! Aqua, remember that was a year ago and a few version of WB ago. The problem wasn't the blinds, it was everyone trying to put there 2 cents into runnung it.

If there is another GUI Olympics, it will be done in a very different way.

So much has changed even in a year.

maybe this time around keep others out of the internal working of it, but opening display the leaders on a link?

Kind of like they used to do when I was into Fooseball tourneys, they had a board for each level of heats, am, pro am, pro, teams the same, who is facing who and the results, double elimination. I don't know how much of that could work into a GUI O, but the basic idea of keeping things right out in the open on a link to it's won page on the site, one that could be linked to from other sites... It could and would be done with an unbiased group of judges, just wouldn't get it all mixed up with all the other sites being in the middle of it. If people had a problem with it, then they wouldn't have to take part in it, all personal choice...

dunno, just an idea...

I am sure others have many, and also Brad and the others from the first time around have loads of understanding of what went BURP before and have ideas on how to avoid it the next time around. But by not being connected to the judging, it would leave old issues out of the picture, and anyone attempting to pull it in could opt not to take part...

Their choice really...

like the saying goes, too many Chiefs ruin the meal and you can not run something like that by consensus or it takes on a nightmarish existence all of it's own...

maybe even do it with double elimination, where just because a skin facing off with another as far as moving up the ladder does not make that cut, it has a chance to make it's way back through the remainder of skins again with the possibility of gaining ground.?.

I dunno, probably screwy thoughts... But there has to be someone(s) with all of your help who could put that end ( the voting ) together, as far a prizes go... that would be a SD issue over all... but for, say 10th - 5th the same prize, 4th and 3rd same same, 2nd something and 1st something else... ?

anyway, I'll be quiet and lurk and learn in this one now

I was never around for the first GUI Olympics so I don't know what the story is...but a new GUI Olympics seems like a great idea! All you need is a panel of set judges who base each submission using the same critique and scale. If there will be too many submissions, you simply break it down into categories like the way you categorize them in the WB Library. I would love to see a new GUI Olympics once WB4 is released. It seems to me skinning is becoming more and more mainstream each and every day. I bought ODNT in January, and just up until now, it seems so much bigger than it was then.
