Useless Threads and IRC

Useless Threads and IRC

How about if there was a IRC Channel set up in Stardock for useless banter, easily available in SD Central and WC Browser. It could relieve some of the useless Threads and traffic on the Message Board. The only thing is how could we encourage people to use it...

I would use it

It's simple. Not everyone has T1 or cable or DSL to use at their discretion. To be able to sit in an IRC channel waiting for an answer or some odd and funny comment to what they have to say/ask, that's asking too much from a lot of people. Most people don't have that sort of patience anyways.

In an attempt to curb a large amount of the useless threads, I have started one thread (which now has turned into a monster of over 6000 posts).... it was, as written in the first post, some things aren't happening in IRC, so I did it here. Now, a lot of the other members have turned that thread into something else, I don't know if I want to attempt starting another thread to curb it. I can name one "Questions" but it'll end up the same way as my "msgboard chatroom marathon"... with too many answers and questions people just don't want to read.

IRC, which I have always believed to be one of the easiest things to use, wasn't as simple as you or I might think, as my boyfriend recently told me... to which I am still doubtful....

My explanation. Now, Deskmod has tried encrypting a chat box into its site, but I don't believe it was all that helpful. What we can do, is implement a messaging system like deskmod did, where users can send individual messages to the admins or whoever. However, the administrators (coders) of WC are extremely busy with other projects and all sorts of other things, so it's not going to be easy to implement then right now.... not without a lot of screaming, kicking, and booting

I'm just trying to find a way to rid of some of the redundant stuff Elfie, saw some Admins politely griping about it

I thought it might be a way to filter some of that from the Board

Yeah, I understand. However, what can anyone do anything about people not reading? I think I have a way to do it so people will actuallyr read it... but we'll see.

mmm, IRC isn't really an issue for dial up as long as your not on an IRC network, then you deal with lag, network splits and such. If Stardocks IRC server is on a private network and not a public one, it should be fine.

It is a personal choice to make use of it though for sure....

Well, people in many other nations actually buy the minutes to use the internet. It gets pretty expensive when they have to buy the time they're sitting on IRC waiting for someone to make a comment or whatever

elvee, actually it is one of the best ideas for support and interaction that I have seen come across the board so far...

just my pov, but real time communications in chat is leaps and bounds beyound message boards..

true, very true... that would be something needing to be addressed for sure. We always had an active OP in channel, always...

Just for that reason, no one returns to a full room of zombiezed names listed as being in the channel while snoozing or sitting at the dinner table

I know I do not use the channels as they are today for that exact reason...

and I am an OP at an international new chat, so it was my first choice when checking out the WinC browser...

anyway...

it is a good idea, logistic need working out, people will either like it or not, and those that do will find they get a lot from it...

I probably will not make use of it very often, but only because of the fact that I've spent the last 2 years in channels everyday anywhere from 5 - 18 hours a day thats why I'm hiding from the one I OP at...

Lurking in multiple channels is BOGUS!

Just the concept of Lurking is BOGUS!

Anyone that lurks in multiple channels is therefore BOGUS!

Yes, with mIRC or Pirch you can set an Event to notify, but that is BOGUS! also

personally i prefer message boards. they are slower paced, and give you plenty of chance to catch up with the replies to your questions.

a matter of preference and style really

also, the last time i tried to work out how to use the chat function in SB, i was hit by a combination of:
* a surging conversation
* if i missed a few posts, i lost the thread of what was going on
* i had no idea how to make it do what i wanted

with regard to the original point about lots of thread, and board load, for most topics there is already a thread, but people don't tend to use it. human nature i suppose

is the board really a load on this site, compared to the downloads?

also, if the board went totally quiet, this site would feel dead.

/me thinks there is a role for both chat and the board

/me has noticed chatting to someone on the other side of the planet is better in a message board anyway, due to the 12 hour time difference.

eh. it's moot...

The Wincustomize channel is mroe of a, mm, after thought?

I guess everyone joins the stardock channel and converses there anyways, but everytime I've been ther you could get more conversation out of an empty soda can placed near your ear

The thing is, there would need to be a draw, a reason for people to se more positive than negative about making use of it.

Visiting Guests who could answer questions about different areas of skining and such. Or about the use of a particular graphics program, hints and tips.

anyway.. without such a plan laid out and path taken up it is inane at least and moot at best...

just my pov silly as it is...

btw: msg btd is more interactive than the freaking irc channels and that goes a long way to explain the thread trends and such....

I have been checking both places out recently, it's pretty decent, but one can spend lots of time in it if not careful. Also, the conversations can get quite speedy. It just takes some practice to get used to it, but over all, I have picked up some good info in them that I wouldn't find elsewhere without posting a new thread.

/me is feeling contrary

Elfkura - It's simple. Not everyone has T1 or cable or DSL to use at their discretion.

/me agrees, since i have a 56k modem

i see this as an argument in favor of message boards. i can take my time

re the marathon thread:

Elfkura - it was, as written in the first post, some things aren't happening in IRC, so I did it here. Now, a lot of the other members have turned that thread into something else, I don't know if I want to attempt starting another thread to curb it. I can name one "Questions" but it'll end up the same way as my "msgboard chatroom marathon"... with too many answers and questions people just don't want to read.

i considered ignoring this, but cannot.

to quote post 1 in that thread:

Elf - I'm turning a thread among this msgboard into a chat room, anyone care to join? =P.

Elf - Let's try not to let this post hang for over 2 hours, hm? =P

as one of the main reasons the thread still exists, there was no "mission" in the beginning that we have diverted from.

as always, if ANYONE wants to stop by, and be friendly, they are more than welcome. i am aware the threads size must be intimidating, but the people inside aren't, honest

elf, for "questions" there is the FAQ at the top of the board. the "fun" threads are about meeting people, friendship, etc. they are something to be experienced as opposed to read.

this isn't the first time you have expressed an interest in curbing or killing the marathon thread. why? and why is it a bad thing?

Elf - IRC, which I have always believed to be one of the easiest things to use, wasn't as simple as you or I might think, as my boyfriend recently told me... to which I am still doubtful....

i went, i saw, i got confused, i left
i haven't been back since. if you know how to use it, and what you are doing, then it probably is easy. but if you don't, then it isn't so simple.

Thanks Iplural

Lately I have seen the Channels act like a School Dance, everyone is on the side but no one wants to get on the floor first...suddenly some one steps out..then another ...and another, and pretty soon everyone is cutting the rug (I am referring to newbies mostly).

Someone will sign on and then quickly sign off as if they made a mistake and were not supposed to be there. I try to say hello and carry a conversation when I see them. #wincustomize has started to see more folks since I started this thread, which is good. I am not a Pro at IRC myself but it is not hard to adjust.

I love running around the Message Board like everyone else, it is the first place I go everyday, You guys dont have to worry about the Board being empty That will never happen. I think the IRC is a good tool for questions and information for Newbies and us old salty dawgs alike
