Useless Threads and IRC

How about if there was a IRC Channel set up in Stardock for useless banter, easily available in SD Central and WC Browser. It could relieve some of the useless Threads and traffic on the Message Board. The only thing is how could we encourage people to use it...

I would use it

That might be helpful. As we are over 1/2 million and growing it would come in handy.

I don't get what you mean...

There is already an IRC channel. #wincustomize and #stardock on the Stardock server irc.stardock.com.
It's already automcatically accessible with the WC browser when you click the "Chat" button. Dunno about the SD Central though.

I just found out how easy it is to use...I will use it from now on.

(Not that I create many threads....just add drivel to existing ones)

You are right in a way Peff. I always thought #wincustomize was like a welcome channel and #stardock was more Techie stuff.

I accidentally click on the chat in the window browser now and then and back out really fast. I have to admit, everyone here has my total admiration and I get afraid I couldn't keep up in chat. Last time I did that it said my name was already in use (but it's not me).

chat rooms scare me for some reason.

I think most people are terrified of screwing up...or getting lost in IRC land. I was extremely hesitant to try it, but it's very cool!

Thanks for pointing me to it....

It really doesn't bite

throw an IRC channel party... have guest speakers on the topics of technology revolving around digital art, skining, themes, walls, icon creations etc...

Have guests of moderators from other sites to share the ideas that are flowing through their groups....

has to be a draw and a reason for people to want to meet there beyond banter, though that would always play a large part in it..

anyway...
just some thoughts

oh and do it weekly, say on friday night... each week and then on the odd time durring the evening in the middle of the week to break the time span between em into smaller chunks..

keep peoples interest...

mmm, we ran trivia and the winner each week got to select a Music CD of choice which was sent to them...

all kinds of ideas to make a draw, and it would probably open the site up to more traffic with people interacting in a , I dunno, with more oomph on the topics spread throught the week....

blah blah blah, I know....

ok I'll shuddaup

Yes, a weekly IRC party. That's a good way to get it started.

How about we set a day, then make it public? I could put it as News on the front page.

How about next saturday, march 7th?
I wonder which time should be best to suit most people...
If we made it around 17:00 eastern time? That would be 22:00 in England and 14:00 in Pacific time. Being a weekend, it can be possible.

What do you think?

Great idea!! I won't be able to make it next weekend, but I still think it's a great idea!!

thanks, Larry

Patric...next Saturday is Sunday Oz time....I'll be chasing cars around a race track...some GrandPrix thingie...

Bummer. Maybe we can reschedule.
17:00 (5 pm) Saturday is 6:00 (am) Sunday Aussie time, right?
Is that a problem? Or what's the best time to try to catch as much people as possible?

Would this thread be considered full of useless banter?

Not everyone wants to join a chat room but just wants to post in a db.
I been to the wincustomize room and it was full of lurkers that were connected but mute. Very aggravating going to a room full of ppl that won't say a word.

Generally IRC is pretty quiet unless someone has something to say. That's why elvee's idea for a "chat room for useless banter" is a good idea. It would be a more active place for conversations.

If you install MIRC you can be connected to several chat rooms, leave them open in the background and have the window notify you if anyone mentions your name or addresses you. Very handy...

I was thinking the same thing today, then realized I didn't know how to use it, but now that I do, I hope it does become a more useful tool for everybody.
