Cant use site anymore

Cant use site anymore

I think that it is unfair to make people PAY to use this site, i only come here for sysmetrix skins, and occasionally wallpaper. Now, i cant download anymore until i PAY!!! That is crap!! This site used to be free, what happened?

In Texas you can get non-name brands for that.

m4ch1n3g0d - you have downloaded over 60 megs of stuff from WinCustomize. All of the SysMetrix skins combined would take up about 17 megs.

So please don't try to say that you just came here for SysMetrix skins. 60+ megs of stuff represents a pretty considerable use of bandwidth.

You don' have to purchase anything. In fact, the policy is stated partly to get people who just want to download tons of stuff without giving anything back to go somewhere else.

I should also add that WinCustomize's policy is to EITHER find ways for people using all the bandwidth to help pay for the bandwidth THEY are using or to encourage them to...well go away.
I've never quite understood why someone who hasn't done anything at all other than leech bandwidth would consider it somehow a bad thing for the site if they went somewhere else.

Frogboy, Stardock offers their software in the form of shareware meaning it is free for use! Then when someone comes here that uses the shareware they are often accused of using ripped off software! What’s up with that? Then to make matters worse they are encouraged to come to WinCustomize to download free skins for said software only to be referred to as leeches! Boy this is a tough crowd. I understand the marketing concept of giving away product to hopefully increase sales! However is it your intent to entice people here only to flame and insult them, and then tell them to go away? If this isn’t the case it sure comes off that way to someone like me that hasn’t been here very long.

Well. I guess I must be one of the leeches because I took advantage of the free offers to use Stardock products and to download free skins from this site. Will I become a paid member? I can’t answer that just yet but I can say that people like me have been called leeches and asked to leave.

Roy, I think you have misunderstood what has happened here, the people who get flamed are the ones who use warez software or just download hundreds of skins for software they have no intention of registering, ever. A genuine person would try the software, and if they liked it would register it, thereby receiving all the benefits that go along with registration. The ones who come here shouting that Wincustomize are money grabbers have already had over 100Mb of skins etc., and suddenly find that they have restricted access because the bandwidth is prioritised to go to those who have registered or contributed.
If you are a genuine user of the trial version, you can download lots of skins for it, but you will be capped at 50mb. Plenty of scope to decide whether you like it or not, don't you think?
Stardock could make the trial version time limited if they wanted to, I think it's very good of them not to do so.
And just look at the free stuff that Stardock DOES give away... Like ObjectDock for instance, great software for free!!
I hope this explains the situation a little better for you.

m4ch1n3g0d: The only reason i come to this site is because i wanted to get sysmetrix skins.

Then why did you download 75MB worth of stuff? There aren't 75MB worth of sysmetrix skins.

I think you're not being entorely truthful with us.

Roy, of course some of the responses to people who are upset about the cap have been regrettably somewhat (cough) less than polite. On the other hand, perhaps not having been here long you haven't seen the many threads over the months of people angrily and sometimes profanely complaining and attacking because they've reached their download cap or the server is busy during peak load times and they can't download. Perhaps you haven't seen the people who brag about using a warez version (and say people are stupid to pay for anything). Or those who accuse WC of lying about the site being busy during peak load times (the contributing users get preferred access during those times). Or say this "f'd up" site should just buy more servers (duh) as if the money can be printed as needed in the back room. And those who trash the site and the artists' work while complaining that they can't download anymore of what they say is "crap." And in the beginning some of the people here (including Froggy) explained and explained and explained the economics of the site, site use and downloads, how one could contribute to the site without paying but through participation, etc, ad nauseum.

So now, clearly some people here have lost patience with complaints and accusations and perhaps react a bit too harshly too quickly to posts that appear to be along the same lines that I've mentioned.

I myself started out using the freeware WindowBlinds just to try it out and see if it agreed with my older PC and OS. It did. So I bought it for the enhanced features. And for $20 it was the best thing in terms of daily unobtrusive and fun use that I got for my Win98 box.(Well Proxomitron too for web surfing without ads and stuff, but that is freeware.) Now I've got XP and still find WB and Object Desktop worth the $.

All that is required to avoid the download cap is to contribute to the site by helping out other users on this board, contributing some skins, walls, whatever or by licensing a Stardock app or getting a WC subscription. That's really not outrageous for unlimited downloads and premium access to the site during peak load times.

Anyway, that's some of the background although not necessarily an excuse for some of the frustration and responses you've seen to posters who are upset about the cap on downloads or "sever busy" notices.

you don't get nothing for free
If you expect somthing for free your out of line........................................
Very simple concept.
If you got some free try it stuff you should count your blessings.....................
