Freedom...what does it mean to you?

Freedom...what does it mean to you?

I've tried to understand what it is to have 'freedom' compared to not having any and low and behold...my cats showed me better than any history book.

When on my computer my cats 'LOVE' to be with me in my room and if the sun shines too bright from my foyer into my doorway and glares on my puter screen I want to shut the door completely and sure enough...all my cats freak out and run for the door...but if I leave it open even a crack...they stay happy and placid and feel safe because they know they have a 'choice' to leave...

I guess what I learned is...freedom is not only a necessity but it is also a 'natural' instinct and to desire it and it's RIGHT is inherently GOOD...

Okay, cheesy analogy but for me...anyway...it rang true.

Shmoopy. Freedom for me is the chance to realise my dreams and my potential. It has been provided to me by the constitution of my nation and my parents. And I love them and respect them for that.
Freedom for me also means the responsibility of utilising my talents in a way that will enrich the society. I hope I am on that path.
Freedom for me means letting have a say, no matter how much I disagree with them.
Freedom for me means respecting other ways of life, other life forms.
And lastly, freedom for me means to eat an ice cream cone whenever I want to, the chance to smell the earth after the first drench following the hot, hot summer and the chance to stand on top of a high rise and scream 'I am the king of the wirld!!!'

derogatory comments are unfortunately also part of freedom and something that tends to curtail the pursuit of happiness in the polite.

Iben, your case is different though...they were accusing you of somthing...it's one thing to just say..."Oh you suck" and another thing to sabotage you by accusing you of ruining someone's puter!

You were right to respond though...and to take it to the board.

/me gets angrier than a hornet's nest in winter when someone does that kind of BS to an innocent artist! >

Joke - Freedom to me is the ability to go to Curious Labs and kick the crap out of the people that designed Poser...

Truth - Freedom to me is basically what I have living in the United States. I've seen what happens at other places if they try something we have freedom for. Like freedom of speech. Hell, US can bash the Preds, but see if another country does it. All Hell!
Love the NRA.. The right to bare Arms.
Basically, I could go down the list of our freedoms and I'm glad to have every one of them. Alot of good people died for us to have them.

There is no such thing as total freedom here on earth cuz just when you may think you are free, someone can just blow you up from the other side of the planet these days or you can just be minding your own business walking down the street and a stranger can just walk up to you and kidnap you and take your freedom away from you in a heart beat. Freedom is just a word ppl get over excited about...
when loving and respecting each other would be better words to focus on me thinks... (which in turn gives freedom)
just my opinion I better run from the freedom fighters now!

Better to be able to run fast

Freedom, Doreen, is a much abused word. People nowadays get away with anything in the name of freedom, it may be speech, to bear arms, to protect one's way of life, religion, etc.
Freedom is another name of duty. You cannot weild power without responsibility. That wouldn't be freedom. That would be tyranny.
Freedom of speech confers the same right to even your opponent. So freedom of speech is as much as hearing others air their views as you speaking yours.
Freedom to bear arms is as much about the peace of mind of your neighbours as yours. They should feel safe around you.
Religious freedom is about understanding other religions, sects and not denouncing them as 'pagan'. It is about praising the good qualities of other religions and able to hear criticisms about your religion.
And, above all, freedom to exist is the DUTY to exist in harmony. If your way of life inflicts damage to others' way of life, it is better to discard it altogether.
Freedom is to live and let live. It is about giving and getting respect. Hence, Doreen, total freedom cannot and must not exist. Cause the kind of freedom you are talking about would ruin the world: power with no duties. It cannot be imagined even in an Utopian world.

Here are the two sets of definitions I got off Wordweb (made by webster I believe)

freedom:
1. The condition of being free; the power to act or speak or think without externally imposed restraints
2.Immunity from an obligation or duty
-----------------------
As I have suspected, even one of the most respected dictionaries didn't give a true definition of what freedom is. True, it may be the power to act or speak or think without externally imposed restrictions, but what it lacks is the power to be yourself truely and unaltered.

Freedom is a word that applies on things that the law said are legal. Freedom is a word that is invented by the founding fathers of America, saying "we want freedom" and the way they went about it was to come up with a set of "rules" that defined how freedom was to be kept.... in which case a lot of it was really off the bat but at least now things aren't so off balanced, according to most people.

No one is entirely free, but as long as we think and do the things we're told are legal, we will be free because the rules made for the people who broke the "rules" wouldn't be free.

Not saying that it is hypocritical, but think long and hard about it. Does the Bill of Rights contain everything that will allow a person to be free? Does anything else in all these other nations contain everything that will allow a person to be free?

Everyone has a different defintion of freedom, and they all live within that definition. Each and every single one of us can only enjoy one type of freedom, and that is the freedom of which our nation has defined for us.

Since we're throwing up definitions... *coughs*

Freedom, n.:
Exemption from the stress of authority in a beggarly half dozen of restraint's infinite multitude of methods. A political condition that every nation supposes itself to enjoy in virtual monopoly. Liberty. The distinction between freedom and liberty is not accurately known; naturalists have never been able to find a living specimen of either.
