~Shallow Grave~

I step off the path and walk through the dense woods
Deep into the isolated middle
My shovel breaks into the solid, undisturbed earth
Digging deeper & deeper into the ground, I become exhausted
the bloody, decaying corpse of my victim is laid to rest, it's gave covered with fresh soil
I leave it behind and set out for a new beginning
Sitting alone, I hear a quiet knock
Answering the door, I see my victim, still covered in the damp soil of its final resting place
Rotting and nearly unrecognizable, surrounded by the smell of death, eyes glaring, threatening my freedom, my new life
I drag it deep into the woods and bury it deep in the cold, wet ground. Deep enough that it will never haunt me again
But it keeps coming back to haunt me
And I realize that no hole is deep enough to hold my past
For it is inescapable and unavoidable
No matter how hard I try, it can never be altered
And no matter how deep I dig, it will always be a shallow grave.
