What's special bout Bryce?

What's special bout Bryce?

I can't seem to understand what is so special about Bryce? I use POVRay, a freeware to render my WP's and it works just fine. Maybe I would like it if I could try it out, but it seems that there is no demo or shareware version of Bryce.
Well whatever!!!!

I've stayed out of this thread, frankly because I'm tired of this whole thing on Bryce. I have been using Bryce since Ver 2, and have a rather large stack of manuals to prove it. I have Susan Kitchens http://www.auntialias.com book "Real World Bryce 2" which is the Bible for Bryce and I have thumbed through her second book and it is just as good, but covers the animation features in Bryce. You can make Magic with Bryce and it does have a very easy learning curve early on but it shoots straight through the roof as you go on. If you want to get better at using Bryce, go check out Peter Sharpe's tutorials, they are the best and are used as official learning tools in the manuals http://www.petersharpe.com and if you want to see what Bryce can do check out the Bill Munns Gallery http://www.billmunnsgallery.com/ or Martin Murphy's site http://members.attcanada.ca/~m.murphy/ or Sylvia Lutnes http://www.thecricketcage.com/index.html or Kelly McLarnon http://topazdesigns.com/~klm/ . The software that you use does not make an Artist, it is the Artist that makes the software. It is like saying that someone that works in Oils is better than someone that works in clay. So please lets stop the whole Bryce vs the world bit. Have a great Turkey day to all it may concern.

Chris

Grog,
I commend you wholeheartedly for such a well thought out, well written, well documented comment. You are officially my new Hero of the World. I only wish that I could have put it as well as you did instead of losing my temper and jumping down people's throats.
You da Man!

Once again, we never said that only bad things are done with Bryce. We've always said that Bryce can do amazing stuff in talented and hard working hands.

THE PROBLEM is that 99% of Bryce users think of Bryce as a tool to do a quick and easy wallpaper or whatever. 99% of the Bryce users want Bryce to do the Art for them instead of trying to do art using Bryce. Because you can get some result rather quickly with Bryce, most of those users think they've accomplished a big thing after clicking here and there for an hour or two.

We all acknowledge, and Jafo too, that Bryce can be a very nice tool when placed in competent hands. After one week of learning the piano, I could play "Mary had a little lamb" pretty good. But never would I have even considered playing it in a Concerto...

Its idd the quick results that speaks to the people.

The more I see work of Bryce the more I tend to agree with Bakerstreet. I sort of compare Bryce now with 30 minute Bob Ross derivates. They all look the same. Mountains, bridges, shacks, trees...Grog's links are nice, but I wouldn't want any of those works on a poster.

My friend, I think the main point is not so much the software as the artist.

I mean I could paint a still life in acrylics or oils, scan it into my computer, and upload it, but I enjoy using software programs at this point of my life. Granted, there are many rather heated opinions on this site about exactly what that software should or shouldn't be and I don't see much point in the argument. I think that you should enjoy what you are doing and what you are doing it with. If someone else disagrees with what you're doing or doing it with, well that's their point of view and they are entitled to it.
And ne'er the twain shall meet...

True, but the artist doesn't make the software as I read awhile back Seriously though, I think every medium has its pro's and cons. Sometimes you choose oils, sometimes watercolour, depending on the subject. For still-lives on a screen, Bryce could be it. My other point would be, even when you try to give it a realistic radiation it stays abstract. No feelings in brushstrokes so to speak, no exaggerations of lightspots or colours...It's like a programmable piano that entirely plays the piano in a pianoconcerto without interacting with the public.

I think you may have slightly misunderstood what he meant by "the artist makes the software."
