I wasn't gonna mention this but...

Well just thought I'd brag, since I've been feeling real good. I've been clean and sober since this past June 15, I know it's not that long but it's a start. Quit smoking too. I quit both cold turkey with no group help. I just got so tired of coughing and the hang overs and the stupid way I acted when I was drunk. I was 2 packs a day when I quit and drank about 3 times a week. I'm 42 years old and smoked for 18 years and got my first drunk when I was 14. Believe me, I tortured my body for 18 years and just decided that I don't want to die a drunk. I was diagnosed a diabetic type two in 1990 so all the smoking and drinking wasn't helping. Now I take care of myself and damn, I hope to live another 42 years.

Ok that's all.

Good to hear of your positive steps. I'm a doctor, and I'm supposed to tell patients "stop smoking" "stop drinking" "lose weight" blah blah blah. My feeling is that most people know they need to stop smoking/drinking and know when they're overweight; I should just offer encouragement and support, not lectures. You've made a good start. The diabetes will be your biggest hurdle, so see your doctor, take your meds, watch your diet, and get your eyes checked! I hate to sound like a doctor, but damn, that's what I am!
Best wishes.
