I wasn't gonna mention this but...

Well just thought I'd brag, since I've been feeling real good. I've been clean and sober since this past June 15, I know it's not that long but it's a start. Quit smoking too. I quit both cold turkey with no group help. I just got so tired of coughing and the hang overs and the stupid way I acted when I was drunk. I was 2 packs a day when I quit and drank about 3 times a week. I'm 42 years old and smoked for 18 years and got my first drunk when I was 14. Believe me, I tortured my body for 18 years and just decided that I don't want to die a drunk. I was diagnosed a diabetic type two in 1990 so all the smoking and drinking wasn't helping. Now I take care of myself and damn, I hope to live another 42 years.

Ok that's all.

That is outstanding. Mark Twain said, " I am an expert on quitting smoking, I have quit a thousand times " Be strong and don't let memories draw you back.

You must be proud of yourself, you know, I am proud of you!

I quit smoking and bought myself this super-duper computer that I am using right now!
Well done sir, stick with it.

Thanks for all the words of encouragement folks.

The weird thing about it is I don't even miss smoking or drinking. I thought that I would be freaking out by now.

Thank God I'm Not.

Keep it up

Congrats jarget!
I quit alcohol 5 years ago and cigarette 1 year ago. The first one was easy, the second was hard for about 3 weeks, then I hardly ever miss it after that.
WTG champ! All the honour to you to quit both together!

hmmm... smokings the only one I have left. I quit three times in the last 30 years and always end up back smoking again. The good thing though, at this point it's the only thing left I have to quit... you guys are an inspiration to me

I hope you live more than 42 years taking good care of yourself. Congrats!

congrats, jarget. Few things show character more than someone improving his or herself when they could more easily coast on. Best of luck, we're all here for ya.

p.s. DavidK quit smoking. If you keel over dead who am I gonna get on-demand criticism from 24/7? If nothing else, switch to cigars or a pipe. Then you can be social hunchbacks like the rest of us. It is amazing how palatable cheap cigarette smoke is to the public as compared to a $5 cigar. Lot of chemical engeneering in that, i bet.

Congratulations, and keep your guard up, especially when everything seems to be going very well. You're inspiring me to give up the cigs.

You should be very proud of yourself for this amazing feat. I have only cigs left to get rid of. I've also tried many, many times. Used all the crap there is out there, patches, gum (yuck ), everything. It's the second hardest damn thing I've ever tried to do and haven't been successful yet. I'm proud of you jarget. You've done something incredible and you did it by yourself. You've got more guts than I do. Hang in there. Don't *ever* pick up another ciggie again. If you're tempted, just get on the boards and start typing. We'll be there for you.

Baker, cigars were an affordable luxury when I had a steady job. Now that I'm self-employed they're out of the question. But thanks for reminding me, I needed to recharge my humidor. I'm saving my last Ashton and a couple R&J's for a special occasion. Maybe if the embargo against Cuba gets lifted I'll go back to cigars... The only pipe I ever smoked is a Chillum...

Listen to werewolf jarget - everytime I started smoking again after 'successfully' quitting was because I decided it had been long enough, I proved to myself I could quit so I let myself have "just one". It doesn't work... that one cigarrette gets you back to the same place you were before you quit, instantly, even after a year.

jarget: Sorry, what I meant to write was that I hope you live more than the extra 42 years you mentioned clean and sober. English is my second language. My best wishes for you!
