Potential contest idea: Design your own desktop

Potential contest idea: Design your own desktop

I was looking at the latest MacOS screenshots and realized that why should only Bill Gates and Steve jobs have all the fun?

What if we had a little contest to let people mock up what their dream desktop OS would be. It wouldn't have to use any existing software, it would be a total mockup of if you had the power to create the perfect operating system, what would it be like?

To the winners, we can see what developers in the community (including Stardock or whoever else) might be interested in trying to turn that person's vision into a reality?

What do you think?

My dream desktop OS would involve probably no desktop, no monitor, no keyboard, none of that. You'd probably see very little of the OS.

something like that OS running your refrigerator?

Amature dreamer here....

My computer would be more holographic in nature. It would be a lot more intuitive than anything we have today. It would see my desires and needs and adapt, phasing out components that I don't use and enhancing ones that I do. Even suggesting applications that might be appropriate that I might not be aware of. There would be no big, square monitor. Simply a variety of projections (don't know how you folks could skin that). Since it is more of a projection, it would be truely portable. Not only would it give me music, it would give me smells (I read once of snortles), movement, sensations.... I think so much faster than I can ever type. I think most people do, and I think much of human creativity is lost this way. I think that the interface where thought and emotion gets formulated to works and images is really clumsy and inadequate. Therefore, if I have to have some kind of typing device it would be like a globe and would depend on pressure throughout my hand and not just my finger tips. Likewise, there would be no mechanical mouse but some kind of plasma pad so that I might manipulate an image in depth as if it were clay. Heck, since my "screen" is really a projection I would be able to reach out and manipulate that directly. Ideally, my computer would be responsive to voice, intonation, and would recognize me as a security feature.

Word programs, spreadsheets could be voice recorded... though even speaking is much too slow. I guess I want a "mind meld" with my computer.... Since I think best sometimes when I am walking, or in the shower some kind of notation device that is portable enough to travel easily to those kinds of places should be available and it should communicate my thoughts directly to the computer to be captured, filed, and made available on my return.

All components must be bio-friendly because I have read that our used and junked computers get shipped to poor countries and are causing an environmental problem. Infact, I think a computer should be able to grow and adapt throughout a person's lifetime. It should be a lot more stable and flexible. One day, children should be able to start out with one computer that continues to serve them their life long, with no loss....

ah well... I get carried away in dreaming. sorry

GoodMorphing,
Great theory. I'd use that method with my shell replacement.

Well it looks like SOMEONE's been watching a bit too much sci-fi .

Seriously, everything GM said is right, that is pretty much my ideal computer.

What I'd realistically (in the next few years) like to see is monitors that project images from the desktop up to a plate of glass, making the desktop transperant, and with the possibilities of adding more plates of glass behind it, and replacing the mouse with a 3-Dimensional graph thingy, where you could put a sensor on the end of your finger, and navigate the computer like that.

Sorry if anyone dosen't understand what I'm talking about, it's kind of hard to explain, I know, but if you do get it, you'll probably think you know what I'm on about, but really be thinking something completely different .

Who or what is teddy, and what does this refer to? If I was too "out there", then I apologize.

Good Morphing:

then go this way ---> http://www.shellcity.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?mode=viewtopic&topic=320&forum=2&start=57

this thread has gone off-topic a while ago, so no need for you to apologize.

Ah.... OK, I shouldn't be so sensitive. Thanks, I understand now... as much as anyone can, I guess. I don't understand trolls.

The only reason for this post is to remind people that the topic still exists. Nobody has replied in here for at least 5 days.
