Potential contest idea: Design your own desktop

I was looking at the latest MacOS screenshots and realized that why should only Bill Gates and Steve jobs have all the fun?

What if we had a little contest to let people mock up what their dream desktop OS would be. It wouldn't have to use any existing software, it would be a total mockup of if you had the power to create the perfect operating system, what would it be like?

To the winners, we can see what developers in the community (including Stardock or whoever else) might be interested in trying to turn that person's vision into a reality?

What do you think?

I and (i think) most of skinners, we are on customization world for construct our dreamed desktop, Frogboy. I deduct that we (the developers and artists) are in a ENORMOUS and INFINITE skinning contest.
YOU (the developers) are making the WAY
WE (the 'artist') are designing the FORM

The contests are good idea to stimulate the skinners, but a contest must be more concret.
The skinners are limitated to the skinning possibilities of a program, so the contest must be for you (the developpers): to make a program (or a set of them) that can make our dreamed desktop.
This is IMHO

Right now skinners are limited by what the software can currently do. A mockup woudl allow peole to see what might be done if the software was infinitely capable.

I think we should have team effort, only one person can have a great idea but imagine if we can work by team!

example:
we can setup team of 4 persons
that would affraid less people to participate and better ideas would come up at the end.

Didn't you try this already with the DreamOS thing?

And for the subject : Isn't every Desktop X theme coming near to the 'vision' of the author of a perfect OS or better GUI ?

I would be interested, but I am only good in making other people's graphics look er, 'different'.
*sigh* I really need to learn to do graphics from scratch...

welllll....
when begin this?
The only thing that i miss on desktopx is the hotkey to show/hide the containers/objects on top.
Other think that i miss is on Windows shell: MacOS is more intuitive. I don't mean that the perfect shell must be like MacOS, but: it must remember the 'show way' on a folder, if you make a folder viewed as 'list', it must be viewed as 'list' when you open it (it will also remember last position). The Windows taskbar are better than MacOSX, so it will remain like now. The folders must have colorization (for control their contents. The desktop objects (icons) must be easy to customize (for example CTRL+J, select the image icon and 'Past' the image this is a great macos feature), and etc, etc... surelly there's a lot of people with other great ideas!
For the graphics... anyone have their preferences, so, it must be customizable, in a easy way to do.
It will be interesting if this idea of making the dream OS go. If you need a collaboration, you know, i can do something about graphics

Think outside the DX box people Just imagine a desktop without the need of a mouse. Bill's example of The Minority Report is a good choice, being able to 'pull' virtual desktops into focus so you can work on them while still seeing others in the background...curse my 15" monitor this ain't all gonna fit on

I think its a good idea, but I have to agree with a couple comments. There is a little to much grey area. If I could make a few points.
1.) Building the perfect desktop. They call that litestep, desktopx and objectbar. When people design a new theme, isn't that the point?
2.) Pick a certain program to make the ultimate desktop. If you don't, you'll have a flood of single bars with a popup menu and a few icons.
3.) Lastly, have the skinners design a desktop, that after the contest, everyone can enjoy.

Just a few thoughts to maybe make things a little easier for people to have as a guideline. Take care!!!

i think the point is to create something that can not be done in any software yet so the point is not to submit a theme but one or more fake screenshots. it will be really hard to "invent" something new. if i look at the comments above, hotkey and vwm features seem very limited in DesktopX, but they aren´t in other software (seems like payware isn´t that "superior").

OSX wasn´t that new. the Finder toolbar comes from the old MacOs and the Dock comes from NEXT.

also one can use Active Desktop with Flash to create something really different (Shinter does that).

sounds like a current creative block in Object Desktop development. contest could be fun anyways.

The idea isn't juts to make something pretty.

But if people could come up with an entirely new way of using the computer in ways that the current software can't do, that is what would be cool.

For example:

Imagine an OS where things like your scheduler and calendar and private contact list were seamlessly integrated into your UI.

Where when you maximized your programs the title bars would disappear and the min/restore/close buttons were part of the menu bar instead.

These are things that could be cool. I'm sure others have thought about how the computer would be nicer but no software currently can provide the functionality they imagine.
