I hate to say this...

I think it's a dumb thing to demand money for this stuff...

It's nasty!

Well.. I think a lot of the artist have bought some stardock stuff... so they don't really care. But those who have not! Those who have sent wallpapers and stuff and now have to pay for it!!!

without 'em, you'd be nothing! So keep it as it is, don't make any restrictions... Perhaps one restriction... (wallpapers:) You have to upload a wallpaper, get it confirmed by some artists <-- so this server won't be filled with crap!), for every 20 downloads of wallpapers you make...

else... I'm out'a here!

I see.

How many skins, themes or wallpapers have you submitted?

I agree, without skin authors, theme authors and other people who spend their time creating wonderful things and sharing them that sites like this would be nothing.

That is why users with Apprentice access or higher get unlimited downloads.

Actually Boza, they don't have to pay if they contributed. That's the beauty of the system!

There are a lot of people who give freely and cheerfully (talent, money, time, etc.) because they want to, not because they have to.

Another one has laid the bait. They won't be back. Stirring up trouble is what these people are all about. It's not that they really care one way or the other. Creating confrontation it what gets them off.

I know the temptation is strong to jump in and argue with these people, but doing so gives them exactly what they want.

I've found the best way to deal with these types is to ignore them. What they hate, what they cannot tolerate, what destroys their ego's the most is indifference to their opinions.

We need an explain-bot. We could load it with cuts of all the best responses through the year, train it to recognize certain phrases, and turn it loose......

We could teach its cousin how to 'splain the applications.

First of all... You missunderstod me completely... And maybe I did too. This site is after all free... but in the future?

They create a demand, gives it free to get as much users as they can. Then, they want money. I've seen this happen to a lot of webpages that serves as a host for many artists that wanna share their work, and take part of others.

After receiving a lot of messages about subscribing, and "get rid of it by paying blah blah" I just realised what's about to happen to this site too...

I don't want you to stirr up or get angry about it, cause you can't change it by flaming the host's email.

It's just that... "share" is not what it used to be. And "free" is about subscribing to newsletters you never read anyway...

Just my 5 cents...

Don't feel all sheepish when you realize you were a dolt, and that no one is 'harmed' by Stardock running their site as they please. Just come back and don't fret your mistakes. In the meantime,

Buh bye...

staying and reasserting your point just makes you look like you are trying to find an excuse to stay... It takes your already useless retreat and aggravates it by leaving a stink in your wake.

Well... I'm not leaving yet

I'm about to see if ther's any way I can get unlimited downloads by just share a bit of my own art.

Does anyone know how it works? just a brief description?

I found out I don't like you bakerstreet.

I'll see if thers any way I can let everyone else, but you, download my work.

I like bakerstreet.

I'm sure you do

It's a pity I site like this is filled with such boneheads like you two.

I'm just waiting for someone, friendly enought to answer my last request, to show up.

I had a link to something that would answer your questions but I had to rebooot my computer so I don't have it anymore

I do not know.. well as far as I know if you uploaded windwoblinds, DestopX, or othe stuff that Stardock makes then you get unlimited uploads, if all you put up is wallpapers then I think it has to be like 5 or more..

at any rate I would ask you to look up Oracle, or MySQL, Apache, HTML, XML, and so one. Scritping that stuff is hard work. Maintaining a site is hard work.

Also, if you contributide by commenting on artis work or helping others on the message board then you get unlimited downloads as well.

in all honesty, I understand where most people are coming from when they make comments like this. If you do not understand the background to the decition or the work that goes into a site that allows people to download and upload, as well as keeping it orderly and pop up ad free then allot of people are like "it was free before!!"

I hope that answered the question

It's good to see that you're still around Boza, because usually people who post comments similar to yours merely want to cause trouble, which is why you receive some harsh replies. From what I've read in other threads, if you submit any of your work to the site and it's added to the library, you're upgraded to a status that doesn't have a limit.

I wasn't sure what you meant by it. If you mean, how it works that you get unlimited downloads by sharing your stuff... then upload your stuff, they notice it, your user status changes, and you are at a level that allows that.

Or does it mean, how physically do I upload my work?

Finally some mature answers!

Sorry for calling you bonehead GoodMorphing, I was wrong about you

As for the answer you, and the others, gave me, It was the answer I was looking for. Thx a lot!

As a matter of fact, that was the kind of reply I hoped for when I started this thread. I thought I had to pay to get another status, and unlimited downloads. Maybe I'd just put it out wrong...

I know it's hard to maintain a site like this. I'm a Bachelor of science in software engineering (not yet... but soon ) And I know very well... don't worry

Now where's my GIMP work again... ah!

Cya!

another on has been saved... ok I am of to my forced vacation... that damn Oracle crashed my computer..... I lost almost everything....

I backed up some stuff so I am cool. I can't wait to upload Thoth X!!!

Boza, judging from your own immature rantings I have no doubts about the bs. (your shoveling, that is)

hmmm... I could be wrong but I don't think WinCusto accepts filter swirlies in the wallpaper section. Just a thought.

Boza, It's all in how you began the thread that caused the problem. While it might have appeared to you to be a legitimate post, the fact is that day after day posts of this nature go up. Usually from those who have nothing to offer other than sucking bandwidth and a preference for flame wars. We are just a little tender to this topic now, that is all....

Il back up boza here, it is not right to start charging for something no one has ever charged for before. I think wincusto could survive on stardock's money (or grant or whatever) and donations from those inclined to do so. But forcing people to pay is just not right, not for skinning, please stardock dont turn skinning into a commercial buisness! I have contributed to wincusto, i own objectdesktop, and i havent even hit the 100mb limit yet, and yet i am very angry at stardock for doing this, even though they are a wonderful company (they make awesome software, like windowsfx!) I think in a way they are destorying the very thing that feeds them, the huge and FREE skinning community. I would much rather have wincusto be a whole lot smaller than have to pay for it. And for those people that wont help code the site without being payed, leave! The skinning community doesent need you, if you dont value it enough to work for free. Skinning is a hobby not a buisness!

The entire net was a hobby before '99. Then what happened...
Sites couldent survive after 1999 (some of them). But for skinning, it should remain free because sites can survive, look at all the great FREE webistes that work just fine. If stardock keeps doing this to skinning, we will soon be paying for acess to every site and still be bombarded with adds! Shame on starodck, cant they see they are biting the hand that feeds them?

The hands that feed them don't have download limits!
