3D

I was looking at some of the 3D screensavers Microsoft has with their Plus, and was wondering if anything like that could be incorporated into DesktopX since it supports animation. Would really be something if you could achieve the same effect without using a screensaver.

what happens if you create a two state object, that changes state when you click on it?

one start is an icon, and the other state is a full screen, always on top, item?

that sounds like an activated screen saver to me, all you then have to do is animate it

Thought about the 2d object (I've seen some of those animated). Wonder if you could get it to look like Microsoft's screensaver. I think I would have to learn how to do 3d objects first though. Interesting thought.

you are only looking at the 3D objects on a 2D screen

which screen savers are you thinking off? i may have seen them.

Its Plus Mercury Pool and another one I like is Plus nature. I've done a desktop (not an uploaded one) where I have most of the desktop covered with the animation, but it makes clicking on top of the desktop almost impossible that way. Anyway, I thought those effects were rather neat, especially the nature one.

i have not seen either of those, which isnt going to help visulise then

is the nature one like the origional nature screen saver?

that (as i recall) was largely a wallpaper with some slightly animated catapillers moving across it slowly.

that sounds do-able, and it even shoulds like you have already done it.

/me suspects you are move devious than you appear

Sorry, Feline. Hubby home after a biopsy and has been monopolizing the internet. No, the nature one is a water scene with waves splashing against the shore.

i hope Hubby is ok! biopsy sounds like it could be a little ominous.

as for the waves, that sounds like quite a few frames of animation.

i have a memory of seeing a DX object that placed a little wave at the bottom of your screen. it just used to wash sideways.

so that is probably a similar idea, but at a much simpler level.

remember that since you are ending up with a 2D display (on a monitor) all the 3D effects eventually resolve down to 2D images.

however, depending on the level of detail and movement you are thinking off, this could be a lot of animation work.

by cutting down the area of screen covered, and by looking for a tileable design you should be able to save yourself a lot of time and work.

Well, I've never been accused of thinking simple, so I was thinking more along the lines of elaborate. Only problem with that on the one I tried was it seemed to take up too much screen space and memory. Sure would make a neat effect though.

/me so confused i falls over

i thought you were after reproducing a screen saver effect? screen savers are supposed to take up to much screen space, normally the whole screen

as for memory usage, this is presumably a direct function of the complexity of the images you have given to DX.

/me starts to wonder

why is it that when ever i start answering one of your questions, we get the whole thread to ourselves?

are all the other regulars forming this neat circle around the outside of the thread to keep newbees out?

we are going to get a reputation at this rate

I was never known to be part of an inner circle, so guess I'm still an outsider. Maybe they think we are too comical. Or maybe it's my questions, or maybe I'm too curious, or maybe, or maybe, ......or maybe it's our combination, or maybe they just don't dare, or maybe we scared them off after the first long one. I forsee this one growing by leaps and bounds with lots of unsolutions.

I do'nt know about that........

a little while ago starone and i racked up over 200 posts in one thread with only 1 post from someone else.

as for an inner circle, i havent found one yet

I thought an inner circle was something that produced the outer glow.

Oh, by the way, I got lost in our thread. Yes, to reproducing a screensaver effect in DesktopX (3d style).

starone,
It is a good idea!

Thanks Adni, glad to have you aboard. Thought Feline and I were an isolated issue. Seems I'm always dreaming.

Dream starone , don't ever stop dreaming!

Okay. Guess it's good to have dreams. Achieving them may be another matter and another post.

woohoo! we have got adni18 in here with us

dreams? you need lots of dreams, especially great big ones with little sparkily lights all over them

as for the memory usage of your theme, i suspect (but dont actually know) tilling a small repeating animation for most of the screen should produce a moving wave effect without using up to much memory.

do you want an edge effect? the waves washing up a beach perhaps? that would require another tiled set of animations i suspect.

i dont envy you the task of producing a tiled set of animating frames, but then, i am still at the line drawing stage.

/me wonders if anyone else here thinks a CAD package is a cunning place to start a skin design

How elaborate are we getting with this design (CAD? - whoa). I'm just at the Paint Shop Pro level.

i just wanted to lay out the initial lines and circles in a specific way. i know how to do this in about 2 minutes using a CAD program, but it could take hours otherwise to get them all lined up properly. the end effect is quite simple, very little to it really.

Hi feline!

About dreams again...

All we need is dreams
(love too, I agree with Beatles, but this is another story).

Achieving them is the most easy part, because we don't have to do nothing, they will come true anyway!
You may think that I am wrong, well... maybe I am not
