making and editing existing skins

can someone please help me... im looking to make my own skin or edit an existing skin... ive read the tutorials and i still cant figure it out... when i double click on say a bar within the skin it opens up in paint to view the slice- is it possible to edit that slice cause once in paint the only option is to change the color.. or do i have to make my own shaped altogether...if thats the case what dimensions do i make them at... so far the instructions to me have been pretty vague.. or im just not looking in the right places...please help...
thanks

First off, you need a better graphics program than paint. Paint Shop Pro (inexpensive), Photoshop (a bit pricey), the Gimp (free) .... do a google search.

Yes you can edit the image, or you can replace it. There is no set size for most images, but a good guide is the size of the image you're looking at.

Sorry, I know very little about the Fireworks program, but I can't imagine why it wouldn't allow you to edit the image.
